Hello Fellow Rotarians

On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of welcoming Councillor Paul Taylor,thank you for visiting Paul in our new premises.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming our Guest speaker Brenton Rickard. Brenton is the Manager for Sport Services for the Commonwealth games 2018 and a former champion swimmer, having won six individual Commonwealth Games medals, three World championship Medals and two Olympic medals. Brenton gave a presentation about his life as an Olympian and the sacrifices that were required to perform at an Elite level and how now he has had to adapt to life after reaching those dizzy heights during his distinguished career. Brenton also brought along his Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for us to get up close and personal with and which was appreciated by all.

Great to see Nancy back from a long sabbatical in Canada.

Thank you to the members who have come forward to assist Pauline with the 45^th Anniversary preparations.

As mentioned at the meeting our visiting Rotarians from Sister club Taraunga have enquired about being home hosted whilst here. Please advise if you will be able to assist. It appears at this stage that we could have 8 visitors from Tauranga.

Ray Milton advised that POOTY preparations are nearly complete and has asked for members book their seats for what will be a great evening.

We have the President of Surfers Sunrise as guest speaker this coming Tuesday which promises to be another great eveing of fellowship and fun at the Broadbeach Rotary Club.

Well you never want to die wondering !!! And I guess I have always worked to live not live to work !!

However as a family we have always enjoyed a form of camping, fishing and exploring.

Anyway my uncle Ron Dempster ( father of the ABC Quentin Dempster ) has an Island in the Great Sandy Straights between Frazer and Maroom called Moonboon Island. It had coco not palms a tin shack and a jetty but great for fishing, crabbing and exploring the myriad of waterways. The rent for the key was a bottle of Bundaberg Rum.

Well Barb and I and two friends decided we would have a get away long weekend and decided on an overseas trip to Demmos Island.

We stacked the car and boat to the hilt ( mainly with Alcohol) and set off. This was where the fun started as we were time limited to tide changes. An hour into the journey a boat trailer type busted and had to be repaired. When we finally arrived at Maroom boat ramp the tide was running out and the sun was setting but we made the decision to head off rather than camping in the car for the night and heading off in the am. Well we got stuck on a sand bank and had to wait the incoming tide, we also had a staffie dog with us. We finally arrived at the Island at sun up to be greeted by a huge black snake at the entrance to the shack. Did I say the sand flies were so bad we had to have fires burning to keep them away. We fished and had fun the, we had a fire get out of control and ran through the island at a rapid rate. We blew up the outboard motor and had to be towed back to the boat ramp by Air Sea Rescue.

GOLD COAST POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS - TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER

The thirteenth annual presentation of The Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Award will be held at the Southport Golf Club on Tuesday 17 October 2017.

Southport Rotary Club has kindly surrendered its venue to us and will be joining us for this special event on our annual Rotary calendar.

Cost on this occasion will be $55 per person. More details when finalised.

What if we do not end Polio now

The goal of polio eradication remains elusive, with three countries still polio-endemic. In recent years, some in the scientific community have raised a difficult question: Can the world eradicate polio, or should we try to contain it?

According to an article by Harvard researchers, controlling the disease would be far more costly than eradicating it. The developing world can save more than US$1 billion a year by eradicating, while switching to a control strategy would condemn 10 million children to polio over the next 40 years alone.

We must not lose sight of our vision of a world without polio. We must finish our work and hold true to our promise to the children of the world.

Major Christine Cohen

Christine presented Broadbeach Rotary with an amazing background of her Salvation Army work overseas. No microphone was need as she addressed the audience with such emotion.27 years working with the Salvation Army in prisons throughout the world.

With the help of the Salvation Army and the Australian Govt she is now assisting with the safer in the home program. This program helps domestic violence women stay in the family home and live a normal life. They will assist with security in the family home to protect them from the male that no longer lives in the home. So far they have helped our 400 women to stay safe and in the home.

A lady walks into a bar and sees a really cute guy sitting at the counter. She goes over and asks him what he is drinking. "Magic Beer", he says. She thinks he's a little crazy, so she walks around the bar, but after noticing that there is no one else worth talking to, she goes back to the man sitting at the bar and says, “That isn't really Magic Beer, is it?" While trying to explain to our six-year-old daughter how much technology had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.
