Fellow Rotarians and Friends.

Not too much from me this week, Sec Neil has done an outstanding job - see his report later in this bulletin.

Many thanks for Secretary Neil for filling in on my behalf last week.  I’m told I missed a great meal and an excellent presentation by Candice Lee of Burleigh Rotaract at the Hub.  On the subject of the Hub, I always enjoy our meetings there, perhaps it’s the relaxed surrounds and causal feel.  The Hub maintenance is vital to ensure its ongoing suitability, not to mention our lease terms of the GCCC.  Many thanks to those who took part in the clean-up prior to the meeting as well as the yard work by the two Johns in removing the leaf litter.

Just a reminder that next week is a night off as March is a five Tuesday month as discussed at the July and November Club Assemblies.

In May and June, in consultation with incoming President Peter, we are going to trial two meetings at the Hotel (first and third Tuesday) and the second Tuesday of both months with no meeting.  There will be a Hub evening on 25 May and the Changeover on 29 June.  I stress this is not a fait accompli, simply a trial.  Importantly, your feedback to Peter and the 21-22 board will determine how, when and frequency of meetings moving forward.

Until next week.

Yours in Rotary

Les

First off – a Big Thank You to everyone that made the night at The Hub a success – the morning clean-up crew, the cooks (Noel H, Noel P and Grahame W), servers, bar, music courtesy of Graham S and the clean-up/washing up crew – it was a job well done and enjoyed by all in attendance.

Candice Lee provided an overview of the activities of the Burleigh Heads Rotaract Club which includes involvement with the preparation of the flat pack building for the Pentecost Island Project. Past President Graham Sivyer thanked Candice for her club’s involvement particularly with the Pentecost Island Project and all their activities in general.
Also, great to see the Hand Made Blankets made and donated by members of the Broadbeach Inner Wheel Club for sending to Pentecost Island – we thank the Club for their donation. The financial outcome of this Meeting is that the surplus of $777 will be put towards the Club’s commitment for the Pentecost Island Building Project – a good outcome.

Sergeant David extracted a bit of money from us through the Fines Session and Luella was successful in the Heads and Tails and Guest Speaker Candice took the spoils with the Raffle.

Rotary awards its highest recognition to the United Nations

To celebrate 75 years of cooperation and a shared history of working together toward a healthier and more peaceful world, Rotary presented the United Nations (UN) and its agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, with its highest recognition: The Rotary Award of Honor.

Accepting the award presented by Past Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on 23 November, "My profound gratitude to Rotary. Through me, you are also recognizing the United Nations and our efforts to build a healthier, safer, and more peaceful world."

Receiving the award on behalf of the WHO on 25 February, Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "Rotary is a vital partner for WHO, and our partnership has brought us to the threshold of an historic achievement over polio."

Rotary, WHO, and UNICEF, along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Since then, nearly 3 billion children have been immunized against polio in 122 countries, and polio cases have been reduced 99.9 percent worldwide –including the recent certification of the African region as free of the wild poliovirus. This public-private partnership also includes the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. "Our progress toward ending polio demonstrates the positive impact we can have when we work together," said Maloney.

After receiving the award on 23 November 2020 on behalf of UNICEF -- Executive Director Henrietta Fore said, "UNICEF's partnership with Rotary is one of our most cherished relationships. Our work together to end polio has been lifesaving and historic."

As the world fights the coronavirus pandemic, the global health infrastructure that has brought polio to the brink of eradication is now being used to help protect communities from COVID-19. "The world is benefiting from the infrastructure that the polio eradication initiative has built over the last three decades," said Rotary International President Holger Knaack.

Rotary has awarded more than $32 million to club projects that support communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rotary Award of Honor was established in 1990 to be given to heads of state and other dignitaries who have made a significant contribution to international understanding and goodwill. Past recipients include His Holiness Pope Francis, Pranab Mukherjee, then president of India, Queen Elizabeth II, and Bill Gates.

Rotary holds the highest consultative status offered to a non-governmental organization by the UN's Economic and Social Council, which oversees many specialized UN agencies. Each year, Rotary celebrates the organizations' shared vision for peace and highlights the critical humanitarian activities around the world.

The Guest Speaker was introduced by Graham Sivyer. Candice is the President of Burleigh Heads Rotoract and described to the meeting the make-up of the Club. There are 25 members ranging from ages 19 to 29 years. Members have actively assisted the construction of the Pentecost Island project and sorting donated hospital equipment and placing in a container for transport. The Club is very active, and their projects include:
* Rations Challenge – members living off food that refugee families have to subsist on. Monetary fines are given for those who want to include “luxuries” into the diet. Their aim is to raise $3000 to buy food for a year for 11 refugees.

The caterers were thanked for putting on a superb dinner – the food was awesome – and the amount of work to buy the food, cook the food, serve it, then clean up was a big task that all appreciated.

The meeting closed at 7.55pm
