Great news this week from Leah Fineran from Benowa SHS. We sponsored them in a literacy project where the students had to write a book in a day. Leah did a presentation at the club to explain the process. The school has won the National competition over 700 other schools. This is a wonderful achievement. Leah was interviewed this morning on ABC radio and gave Broadbeach Rotary credit for stepping up and supporting them.

The following is a request from Richard Crandon, Special Projects Director, Rotary District 9640.

We need your stamps for the EndTrachoma by 2020 Project.

Your Used Stamps, once trimmed and sorted, will be sold, and every dollar raised will go towards preventing this infectious eye disease by improving health and hygiene in remote areas of Australia.

Together with the World Health Organisation, we can achieve the global effort to eliminate trachoma by 2020.

At this time of the year those of us who rarely use snail mail probably send and receive Christmas cards so if you can save the stamps they will go to a great cause.

I have emailed everyone the details of the Family Christmas party on 2 December. Please call me if you have any queries re this.

The party for members will be held on December 18 in the causal area downstairs. Hors d’oeuvres will be served. The food was delicious last year so it promises to be a great night. Please call any previous members, or widows of previous members, who you think would enjoy coming along.

A reminder that it a vocational meeting next week at Polair. Please advise by Monday if you are coming. I will be bringing my 11year old grandson who is really looking forward to it.

Some notes from the Board meeting held Tuesday 20 November

The Board agreed to send 5 youths to 2018 RYTS. All members and families are invited to attend a dinner at the Tyalgum Ridge resort at 6.45pm on Thursday 6th December
PP Bruce Kuhn is leading the GCE team to the Philippines in March 2019. The team launch will be advised in due course
We will be hosting the incoming District 3780 team from the Philippines from 8th March 2019. Therefore the meeting of the Club scheduled for Tuesday 12March 2019 will be moved to Sunday 10 March 2019

MEMBER ANECDOTE

NEIL JONES

Many years ago when I still had some brown in my hair (and looked like the photo above) I traveled from Adelaide to Sydney to attend a two day conference at Westpac's Sydney headquarters. As was usual for such conferences, those attending were centrally booked into the then Wentworth Hotel which was nice and handy to the Bank's then 60 Martin Place head office.

Having arrived at Sydney airport I as usual hopped in a cab and directed the driver to take me to the Wentworth Hotel. Nearing my destination I felt for my wallet and to my utter concern discovered I did not have same and no idea where it might be. My only thought was that it must have slipped out of my pocket on the plane. My concern was how I was going to pay my taxi fare without any cash or cards and given it was already well after 9.00pm.

The taxi driver obviously sensed my concern and we began to speculate what options I might have to get some cash. Having discussed whether any of my colleagues would be staying at the hotel it was agreed he would retain my suit pack whilst I went into the Wentworth to try and locate a colleague.

At the reception desk I related my predicament to the hotel staff. The Assistant Manager who had overheard my conversation and even though I had no identification accepted I was a Westpac employee. Having checked that my hotel costs were being billed to Westpac, he offered to advance me $100 and put it on my hotel account on the basis that I would explain the situation to the bank in order that the account would not be challenged.

This offer was taken up most appreciatively, the taxi driver duly paid, my bag retrieved and having checked into my room, I quickly phoned home to find my wallet was safe and sound on my bedside table.

I wonder if such a service would be offered by any hotel today!

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Broadbeach Inc. will be held at the Quality Hotel Cnr Markeri Street and Sunshine Boulevard Mermaid Waters 4218 at 7.00pm on Tuesday 4^th December 2018

The purpose of the meeting is to consider the following business:

Receipt of Financial Statements and Reports – To receive and consider the financial statements and reports for the year ended 30^th June 2018
Election of Officers
Other Business – To consider any other Business of which notice has been given to the Secretary by no later than 5.00pm on Tuesday 27th November 2018 prior to the date of the meeting.

Clubs Christmas party to be held at the Quality Hotel

November is Foundation Month

Foundation Director Neil Baldwin and Treasurer Noel are currently collecting member's personal contributions to The Rotary Foundation.

Common contributions are:

- Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) - any amount US$25 (A$35) and above

- Centurion - A$100

- Sustaining Member - US$100 (A$140)

Sergeant Russ opened the meeting and called on Bruce to propose a toast. Schoolies week has commenced and as Bruce was involved in policing previous Schoolies, he toasted schoolies who in spite of media reports are well behaved law abiding and the future of our country.

Uwe introduced his guest, Ray Burton. Ray was a member of our club and was president in 1997/98, involved in the scooter project and a Paul Harris Fellow.

President elect Graham Sivyer informed the meeting that he was calling for nominees for president elect and all executive/Director positions for the 2019/20 Rotary year. Nomination forms are available from Graham.

President Pauline noted that no one had come forth with suggestions for the Christmas party on the 18 December and proposed that we have it entirely in the downstairs room. The members were happy with that arrangement.

Sergeant Russ extracted copious fines including a belated birthday fine from Robin who had her birthday in June. Graham for forgetting the car boot sale and Nasser and Nayer for traveling to Malawi.

Malcolm Daviess won the raffle and Bruce Kuhn called correctly to win heads and tails.

Steve Cockle from the internet service provider “On the Net” was our guest speaker. Steve spoke about the NBN and gave us a run down on its history so far. The roll out started in 2009 and in spite of the problems encountered with asbestos in the pits it should be completed in 2021. Even though the system was down graded from fibre to house to the use of co-axial and copper in the final delivery, NBN is a far superior to what it is replacing. 5G won’t compete with NBN due to cost and its limited application.
