Presidents Report 12/11/2019
Thank you to all host family and supporters of the Rotary Exchange Guests from Canada and the USA.
We welcomed not only guests and visiting Rotarians but also DG Elect Andy Rajapaske.
An exceptional evening of fellowship and presentations about the diﬀerent projects each American Rotary club were doing.
Ray Milton thanked everyone for support and assistance with the Police Oﬃcer of the Year.
Particular mention to Bruce Kuhn and his eﬀorts to make the evening a success.
Pauline Armstrong gave a brief presentation of the impressive ‘Poetry by the Five Year Students at Benowa State School’. [the book of Poetry was circulated to the attendees during the evening.]
The project involves discussion with two ‘poem writers’ in the classroom with the children about creating poetry. Our Club proudly supports this initiative of Benowa school.
Thanks to Sergeant Nigel for his fund raising eﬀorts and for teaching the Americans the ‘sport of two up’.
This weekend Broadbeach and Surfers Sunrise clubs will be transporting orthopaedic devices from the Gold Coast University Hospital to the Men’s shed in Arundel for storages.
These devices will be transported to Mauna Hospital along with the ‘ﬂat pack’ building for Mauna Hospital extensions.
Nigel Hyland and John Curr have kindly oﬀered their service to assist collecting them.
Look forward to seeing everyone next week for the address to our Club by the Honourable Member of Federal Parliament, Angie Bell.

RECENT VISIT TO HONG KONG

I had the privilege of leading 11 of my International Yachting Federation of Rotarians, Gold Coast Fleet to the scheduled Annual General Meeting of Area 3, (consisting of South Pacific and Japan).

Unfortunately the International Vice Commodore decided due to the political unrest in Hong Kong to defer the AGM until November 2019.

Many of our members had organised to travel to other countries after Hong Kong and our general concern was the risk was acceptable and we should go,

Our Qantas flights to and return were only 50% full, indicating travellers’ concerns. Our decision was also based on the fact that the Australian Government had not indicated to not fly, plus Qantas was still flying in and were also still doing business.

Hong Kong continues to build new highways, fabulous designed bridges of course, more high rise living apartments (population 7 million).

Its underground rail system (MTA) is excellent, cheap and easy to use. The locals are polite and use the rail in a very orderly manner.

We knew before we left that the demonstrations did so on the weekends as most are young office worker, professionals and university students.

With this knowledge we felt reasonably safe and as we were staying in a hotel in Causeway Bay area we assumed from TV coverage that most of the demonstrations were around Government and Police headquarters.

This proved to not be correct as on one night out group split up and went to restaurants away from our hotel. My experience briefly was that before leaving the restaurant I went to the bathroom. In the bathroom were demonstrators taking their masks and helmets off. I asked them if there was a problem. These young lads told me the police and a large group of demonstrators were confronting each other on the intersection. They advised not to go out, possible live bullets being fired and gas canisters will be used.

We cautiously went to the front door, could see the mass of people at the intersection and decided to walk back to the hotel, some 2 blocks away, keeping close to shop fronts. After walking some 50 feet we heard yelling and heard gas canisters being fired and suddenly several thousand people were running past. We increased from walking to jogging to prevent us from being knocked down.

We made it back to our hotel and saw demonstrators and police on the other side of our glass walls. Hopefully you will be able to see enclosed shots and police arresting people.

As Harold Busch told you in his last Anecdote he was not so lucky as they locked the front doors before he could get in,

Since we left the demonstrations have become more violent, there is much speculation on why, including Chinese planted agitators. Only time will tell if these violent tactics are successful, in the meantime tourism has taken a big hit and some businesses are already relocating to other countries.

Needless to say we all enjoyed the experience and got home safely.

At Easter 2020 our Sister Club Tauranga will celebrate its 75th anniversary and is inviting members of Sister Clubs Broadbeach & Kasaoka to join them for this special occasion.

A program of events is being arranged and more details will be advised. Home hosting will be available for Broadbeach members & partners but if you prefer to arrange hotel accommodation this should be done as soon as possible as Easter is a very busy time in Tauranga.

We will look at organising some additional touring either side of the Tauranga visit - possibly self drive people movers/small bus depending upon numbers. If you are interested in joining in the visit to Tauranga please let Neil Jones know. A meeting of interested members will be convened in November.

One of the most sociable and inclusive nights we have had for a long time. The visitors/guests streamed in and filled the room from an early start, the door duties by Bob and Tony were a frenzy.

Guests from the RC's of Burleigh, Surfers Sunrise and Ashmore were present, along with the Seattle/Vancouver Group Friendship Exchange (GFE) of District 5020 guests, were all seated with our own members and guests for the introduction by Sgt Nigel. The international event inspired a toast to Rotary International with reference to the diverse clubs we have involved during the past, present and pending years.

President Graham went through the involved welcome to the guests by name, far too many to mention here, and set the tone for the evening. Whilst waiting for the food, Pauline provided a summary of the literary project we assisted at Benowa School and subsequent book was offered for perusal of the members. Ray then provided a summary of the Police Officer of the Year with thanks to those involved.

Back to President Graham who provided to our guests a summary of the Pentecost Island project with more to come at Friday nights BBQ farewell at the Hub.

After the meal, enjoyed by all, Nigel conducted a snappy fine sessions with Brian and Neil B as which included an impromptu lesson of Sir Clem Renouf who started the Polio Project, raffle was drawn by Surfers Sunrise President Mario's wife Sylvia, who managed to draw Sgt Nigel's ticket.... perhaps the video ref should have been consulted... before a rigorous heads and tales saw PP Pauline as the winner.

Return to President Graham for the invite to the Friday night BBQ and a vote of thanks to the Quality Hotel staff for the night. Over to Bill Rex for the introduction to GFE team leader Steve Gartien of District 5020.

First speakers were John and Linda from RC of Sooke. Their local projects includ a shelter for domestic violence, a crisis centre they have helped build, a socks for homeless project, before exchanging banners with President Graham and President Mario (Surfers Sunrise).

Lee and Pam followed, from RC of Gig Harbour, who are a morning Club with 133 members with a waiting list of people wishing to become members. They support Interact and EarlyAct, built a thrift shop to support people in need, moved a School house to make way for development and have a Bikes for Kids program. They also have projects in the Philippines.

Next were Nora and Andrew, RC of Duncan, who are involved in a Hospice project for young mothers, very involved in a variety of youth programs and a food support program for young pregnant girls who need assistance.

Sherm and Nancy of RC Sumner were next, their club is involved in bricks and mortar projects, support a food bank, a new YMCA and a sports complex which has now been running for ten years. The member who kicked it off is 92 and still attends Club meetings. They also have a number of international projects in Kenya and Haiti.

Team Leader Steve and Cindy of RC of Poolsbo next, they have 127 members, one of their biggest projects is the Murrow manor, a $2.2m project based on a park and DV victim accommodation, which started by the donation of a member of the land. Steve is invested in professional service project (similar to an exchange), and has also prepared a year in review mat used for promoting Club activities to the community.

Michelle and her travel buddy/mother Shar followed, Michelle is the IPP of Poolsbo Club, and provided a summary on her and her family involvement in the Youth Exchange and other Exchange programs, including her daughter to Poland, her son to Finland and return exchanges she and her family have hosted. She also provided detail of a coffee oasis program supporting homeless youth and a refuge.

There was a huge thank you to all hosts of the exchange before a final wrap up by President Graham.

A planned after meeting discussion with DGE Andy was postponed as the meeting went late, and it appeared no one was going to leave, such was the great night and social interaction. The night was another great example of the highly successful Rotary programs and exchanges.

Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business.
Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.
She made a mistake, however, when she accused a new member, Frank, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup
parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon.
She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there would surely know what he was doing.
Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away.
He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing.
Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house .... walked home .... and left it there all night ...
