Fellow Rotarians and friends
It was with sadness that we farewelled our PP Keith Hawton on Monday. However, he would have been pleased with the strong turnout from the club and the excellent and appropriate address from David O’Dwyer. David spoke from the heart and I am certain his words gave comfort to Lorraine.
On a lighter note I ask you all to attend a Welcome to the D3780 GCE Team from the Philippines and the Launch of the D9640 outbound Team to D3780 on Sunday, March 10. This team is being led by PP Bruce Kuhn and we will be having many District people coming as well as the Qld Consul General for the Phillipines, Rotarian Margaret Grummitt. I hope the club can support this event. It is only $15 and drinks are available at your own expense. It is at the Quality Inn and goes from 11.00 till 2.00.
We are also hosting a barbecue at the Hub on the Tuesday night to showcase our set up to our visitors. We are catering ourselves so it will be an informal and social night.
Thanks to Jim Hawkins for stepping in at the last moment to do a presentation on drones. They really are fascinating pieces of technology and from the information from Jim they obviously have a lot of potential in many areas including the military.
Have a great weekend.
Yours in Rotary
Pauline

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis

What is the Role of the Secretary?
The role of the Secretary is to support the President in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Board in particular and the Club in general.
The following is a very brief overview of the Secretary’s role in our Club.

In this Club information from some, or at times most, of the following are received and are required to be dealt with on a daily basis. They include but are not limited to: District, RI, RDU, and the Public, Board members, members in general.
Issues that relate to members of the Board are not dealt with by the Secretary. If received by the Secretary, they are sent immediately to the relevant Board member for action and information.
Note: If any member has a Club related query they should contact the relevant Director in the first instance rather than the Secretary
In order to ensure all issues and records are kept up to date, it is essential that they are addressed immediately.
The role of Secretary in this Club requires 10 - 12 hours work per week. This can increase at the time of a Board meeting
If left unattended the role can easily “get out of hand”

Main responsibilities of the Secretary
The responsibilities of the Secretary of the Club are, but not limited to the following:
1. Ensuring Board meetings are effectively organised and minuted
2. Maintaining effective records
  1. Daily Duties
  • Check Clubs Gmail account and act on content
  • Reply to correspondence
  • Attend to incoming mail via Clubs PO Box
  • Attend to District 9640 mail and Email
This might not seem a lot, but it is reasonably time consuming.
The secret to ensuring the role is successful - organisation and time management, never get behind in day to day issues.

EGYPT
Some places you travel to do not meet up to your expectations, others tend to exceed.
Egypt… a true wonderland and cultural contradiction.
About seven years ago, on one of our visits ,we decided to visit the temples of Abu Simbel and then visit a friend in Aswan.
Our friend Ashraf, a legal colleague of my wife, suggested we catch a light plane from Egypt directly to Abu Simbel, then from there a quick flight north to Aswan.
So off we hopped into a twin engine De Havilland from Napoleonic times!!
It spluttered and huffed,8 of us on board, off we go!!
A beautiful trip; tree top flying, heading south, hugging the Nile river.
The Nile from air a wonder of green surrounded by desert.
We landed next to the temples ,and viewed such; a breathtaking experience.
When we went back to the plane the pilot informed us plane “no flying” ,he said good news and bad news, plane “no flying” bad news.
The good news is he explained plane  is “no Flying “ on ground,  and not “no flying” in air, which he assured us was a more precarious situation!!
So plan B (in the mid east ALWAYS have plan A to Z ).
We hopped in the back of a Hilux, complete with mounted machine gun due to tension with the Sudanese border.
About half way to Aswan, we stopped at a Nubian village, the Nubian make everything from Nile clay, and tint it with a beautiful turquoise blue.
Erica fell in love with a hand made statue (pictured below) which she negotiated for, and we have to this day ,a priceless memory to us of a priceless time.
After an amazing lunch and time with these beautiful people, off to Aswan.
Ashraf met us at Aswan, ready for our next adventure.
He asked how was the trip ,we replied great, just another day in Egypt, all’s well that ends well”,    “InShallah”  (God willing).

PASSPORT CLUBS
The first passport club in our region is chartered on 23 February 2019!  Congratulations go out to the Rotary Club of D9560 Passport! But what exactly is a passport club?
The goal of a passport club is to create a positive Rotary experience for new and transferring Rotarians, former Rotaractors and Rotarians, and prospective members. This is a great option for those trying to determine if a traditional club in the area makes sense for them, or if they are looking for a more flexible club environment for the long term. Passport clubs are designed to be a low-cost club model that is more accessible and in tune with the needs of its members.
Passport clubs still need to ensure they provide a ‘meeting’ opportunity twice a month. This could include: meeting face to face, on-line, service projects – either their own or tagging on to other clubs’, fundraising activities, networking events, web content or online discussions.
Worldwide there are 18 passport clubs that have chartered, the majority in North America, one in Croatia and now one in Australia.

OK, so it seems still to be a long way off but accommodation will soon become hard to get - some places are already fully booked.

Why attend a District Conference?
  • Well, to start, it's fun: you meet lots of interesting people
  • You will hear Keynote Speakers for which you normally would pay hundreds of dollars to attend
  • The dinners are always superb fellowship events. The Saturday Night dinner is always very vibrant; this year they have a top notch Jazz & Swing band.
  • You learn a couple of things about Rotary which you may not have known before
Registration for Rotarians and their partners is free of charge, however, in fairness, a fee applies to partake in the events which serve food.  Click on this link to go to the Registration Page.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

The irate customer called the newspaper office, loudly demanding to know where her Sunday edition was.
“Ma’am”, said the Receptionist, “Today is Saturday.  The Sunday paper is not delivered until Sunday”.
There was a long pause at the other end of the phone, followed by a ray of recognition.  “I’ll bet that’s why no one was in church today too.”

A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter.'
Her mother told her this was wrong, she must say, 'I'm Jane Sugarbrown..'
The Vicar spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, 'Aren't you Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter?'
She replied, 'I thought I was, but mother says I'm not.'
