We have two reports this week: Firstly from Vice President Neil Baldwin who has been standing in for President Graham for the last few weeks.

Great to see the 23 members that were able to attend the Meeting on 13 August 2019 and we enjoyed the meal provided by the Hotel. Sergeant Uwe had a pretty productive fines session, with maybe no members missing out on having to kick the tin. The Heads and Tails was pretty quick, with only a few tosses and Jim was the lucky winner and Les was the first time lucky winner of the Raffle.

Thanks to Past President Neil Jones who led our discussion on the current proposal being put to Clubs in District 9640 to vote on a motion to discontinue with the merger with Districts 9600 and 9630 to become District 9620 as at 1 July 2021. There was a deal of interaction between all members with reference to this topic and from these discussions the Club has a clear view on the way that the members should vote. The vote on this matter will be conducted at the next meeting of 20 August and all members are encouraged to attend to be able to provide their input and to determine this matter. You will remember that Broadbeach was 1 of 8 Clubs not in favour of the Merger proposal when we voted on this previously and it is fair to say that position has not changed.

The next meeting will have a presentation from Past President Denis O’Brien on the history of Broadbeach Rotary Club, so can I encourage you to please Register for this meeting as soon as possible. There will also be a Board Meeting following the Club Meeting.

Can I also encourage members to see if they can assist Noel and Kay Hodges in involving our visiting language student Natsuno from Kasaoka in any activities particularly over the weekend of 24/25 August.

Members will remember the request for assistance with the production of the Rotarlight and if you would like to find out more about this, please discuss with either Neil Jones or Tony Lewis.

Good luck and happy safe travels to those members who are heading overseas or enjoying domestic travel.

This meeting sees the return of President Graham after his short overseas sojourn and I bet that he is keen to resume his involvement with our meetings and club activities.

The second report from President Graham who has returned from a few weeks in the USA.

Many thanks to Neil Baldwin for filling in as President during my absence
Also thanks to all who have welcomed me home. [ It is good to be back in the ‘best Country in the World’. ]
Shweta and I toured the ‘deep south’ USA from New Orleans to Atlanta, Knoxville Kentucky, Nashville and Gracelands in Memphis and then back to New Orleans.To attend the Martin Luther King Jnr memorial and church in Atlanta where he preached was truly a moving experience.
In Knoxville we attended a medical conference with over one thousand doctor colleagues.
We found that Americans in all the places we visited were generous and very helpful.
I believe there has been much discussion during the last few weeks regarding the amalgamation
of districts and that a ballot by Broadbeach Rotarians will take place next Tuesday [20th].
As I understand, there are over 50 Rotary Clubs in our District and all clubs have been invited to vote. Votes are allocated depending on the number of members per club and range from 1 vote to 3 vote allocations per club. Our Club is allocated 2 votes.
This is an important issue and I would encourage all members to make an effort to attend next Tuesday. [Unfortunately proxy voting on this issue is not available.]
Another important reason for attending Tuesday will be to hear Denis O’Brien present the history of our Club from inauguration until present. [There will be many a photo to reminisce by.]
I am happy that the invitation to Angie Bell our Federal minister has been postponed. As most of us are aware Angie has had previous experience of Rotary and is keen to address our Club. Jim Hawkins will see if we can align her visit with a combined Inner Wheel and Broadbeach Rotary Club meeting.
I would also like to invite Surfers Sunrise and Gold Coast to attend the meeting as Angie may be pivotal to our discussions with the Vanuatu Department of Health and the Pentecost Hospital project.
It was pleasing to hear past Broadbeach Rotarians Brian Pearson and Ros Byrne had attended a couple of our recent meetings.

PLEASE NOTE: This ballot will be conducted in accordance with Rotary International By Laws Article 13.030.5 – Club Voting and Article 17.040.4 - Voting Parameters:

13.030.5. Club Voting.
Each club shall be entitled to at least one vote. Any club with a membership of more than 25 shall be entitled to one additional vote for each additional 25, or major fraction thereof, of its members. Such membership shall be determined by the number of members in the club as of the date of the most recent club invoice preceding the date on which the vote is to be held.
Clubs with up to 25 members 1 vote, Clubs with 26 – 37 members 2 votes, Clubs with 38 – 62 members 3 votes.

17.040.4. Voting Strength
At least 15 days prior to the voting, the district governor will inform each club how many votes it is entitled to in accordance with the RI Bylaws. This list shall also include new clubs, whose voting strength shall be based on the number of charter members, and clubs reinstated after generation of the most recent invoice, whose voting strength shall be based on the number of members with which they are reinstated.

When I was working for the Queensland Electoral Commission I often wondered why it is that the Liberals are called the "right" and Labour are called the "Left" until by chance, a friend brought these verses from the Bible to my attention:

"The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left". Ecclesiastes 10:2

"He will put his sheep on his right and the goats on his left". Matthew 25:33

Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen

It can't get any simpler than that.

NB. Having read this short anecdote no conclusions as to my religious and political leaning should be drawn.

Rotary Information Weekly

August is Membership and New Club Development Month.

In RI President Mark Maloney’s monthly message on MyRotary, he encourages Rotarians and Rotaractors to grow Rotary.

“Let us try a new approach to membership, one that is more organized and strategic. I am asking every club to form an active membership committee consisting of people of different backgrounds who will look methodically at the leadership of the community.
Your club's membership committee will then apply Rotary's classification system — designed to ensure that the range of professions in your community is well represented — to identify potential leaders with the skill, the talent, and the character that will strengthen your club. If your club's membership committee is unsure how to proceed, look to the club membership committee checklist on Rotary.org for clearly defined steps to organizing its work.”

The stronger and more diverse membership is, the more inviting clubs will be for prospective members to join. With this strategic approach, the question will not be “who do we know” but “who are we missing”. To do this, the club must first identify gaps in terms of skills, demographics or even ways of thinking. This will bring more vibrancy into club meetings and other opportunities for interaction.
An honest self-assessment is really a cornerstone for any change to come about.

Even then, Mark continues: “No Rotary club in the world can possibly serve all segments of its community. Therefore, we must organize new clubs to engage the community leaders who cannot connect with our existing clubs.”

Beyond growing in numbers, retention will be another challenge. It would be amazing if we can grow Rotary to include new members who will be fully committed to the ideals of this great organization from the beginning.

The meeting was opened by Sergeant Ewe and Russ was invited to make the toast. He toasted the Queen which was mainly because he expects to be having coffee with her this time next week.

Director’s reports

PE Les asked that anyone who is interested in being part of the Board next year to advise him.

Neil Jones gave a brief report on his stint last week as standing in for Graham Jones on the Malaria project. Neil had the opportunity to hold the 2019 Melbourne Cup. It was there as part of a worldwide promotional tour.

Neil B reminded everyone that Noel and Kay would like assistance in entertaining the incoming Japanese student. Alain stated he may be able to help.

Discussion re re-districting.

Neil B asked Neil J to lead the discussion on the proposal that District 9640 withdraws from the amalgamation with the 2 other districts. Members need to read the email sent by Secy Les on 8^th August which has an email from the DG outlining the reasons as to why this should be seriously considered. One of the reasons is that Youth programs differ and 9640 has been far more pro-active than the other 2 Districts in formalising policies. It would also seem that most training/ meetings etc would be held in a central Brisbane venue which eliminates the country clubs from hosting these ventures. There are also considerable costs involved with the merger, including paid staff and renovation to the building that will become “Central Office”.

It was agreed that a vote will be held next week to see if our club does want to withdraw from the re-districting proposal. It needs two thirds of clubs in the District to vote yes for the proposal to be adopted. This vote will be re-visited in 3 years in case the situation changes.
