What is the Role of the Secretary?
The role of the Secretary is to support the President in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Board in particular and the Club in general.
The following is a very brief overview of the Secretary’s role in our Club.
 
In this Club information from some, or at times most, of the following are received and are required to be dealt with on a daily basis. They include but are not limited to: District, RI, RDU, and the Public, Board members, members in general.
In order to ensure all issues and records are kept up to date, it is essential that they are addressed immediately. For example a membership enquiry or a visitor enquiring about attending a meeting. Thus if done correctly, the role of Secretary in this Club requires 10 - 12 hours work per week. This can increase at the time of a Board meeting
If left unattended the role can easily “get out of hand”
 
Main responsibilities of the Secretary
The responsibilities of the Secretary of the Club are, but not limited to the following:
1. Ensuring Board meetings are effectively organised and minuted
2. Maintaining effective records
  1. Daily Duties
  • Check Clubs Gmail account and act on content
  • Reply to correspondence
  • Attend to incoming mail via Clubs PO Box
  • Attend to District 9640 mail and Email
This might not seem a lot, but it is reasonably time consuming.
Most time the Secretary is the first contact a person has with the Club and thus must create an excellent image of the Club
The secret to ensuring the role is successful - organisation and time management, never get behind in day to day issues.
 
 
ALMONER REPORT - Bob Jordan
 
Plenty to report this week, Keith is in hospital for a couple of days but purely to have some iron transfusions but is otherwise fine.
Good to see Cec and Bill back at Rotary, Cec has recovered from his illness and Bill is continuing with his treatment which finishes June 30th
Will try and catch up with Frank but it’s not easy.
Nearly forgot about Russell, spoke to Russ today (wednesday), he has had a small heart attack and is presently in John Flynn hospital where he has undergone a procedure to have a stent inserted. Sounds in good  spirits and expects to be discharged in the next couple of days but unfortunately has had to cancel his overseas holiday.
That's it for me in this role, don’t know who is taking over but I am sure the new board have it worked out.

On a recent tour of Vietnam we commenced our tour in Hanoi – a very beautiful city with so much history and the worst footpaths.  The locals park their scooters on the footpaths which have gaps and holes and are sometimes just not there.
Unfortunately, we had a day when it rained and when it rains in Asia it is very heavy and constant for about an hour, so we were driven for the tour rather than walking, which was much safer.  
Our van stopped in a very busy street and all proceeded up an alley which was very dark and narrow with the most amazing little restaurant at the end.  There were steps leading up to a small eating area plus various very small rooms leading from one another on the ground floor.
We all sat on stools of different colours and sizes, in comfort out of the rain and quite squeezy.
The best part was the egg coffee -  sounds awful but is well worth trying.  It was made from egg yolks beaten up in a Mixmaster type gadget which gave the effect of a very smooth creamy coffee with no egg taste.
We did not find this recipe in any other part of Vietnam and we are so pleased we had the courage to try it.

Annual Changeover Dinner
 
This important event where President Alain will hand over the chain of office to President Elect Pauline will be held at the Quality Hotel on Tuesday 10 July 6.30pm for 7.00pm.
President Nominee 2019/2020 Graham Sivyer will chair the evening and we will be joined by DG Darrell Brown (by then PDG).
As usual this will be a partner's evening and guests are also most welcome.
Cost $40 per person which includes a drink on arrival.
Let's send Alain off and welcome Pauline in a night of fun and fellowship.
 
 
Joint Meeting Wednesday 18 July 2017
In lieu of our usual Tuesday dinner meeting on 17 July we have accepted an invitation from Surfers Sunrise Club to join them in a special meeting at Surfers Paradise RSL Club.
District 9640 Peace Fellowship Chair, Ray Higgs has arranged for four Rotary Foundation Peace Fellows currently studying at the University of Queensland to come to the Gold Coast and present on what they do, their aims and how they intend to get there.
Burleigh Heads, Nerang and Surfers Paradise Clubs will also be joining us so this will be a great opportunity to join fellow Gold Coast Rotarians in fellowship as well as to meet current Peace Fellows from UQ and gain a better understanding of The Rotary Foundations Peace Fellowship Program.
Cost will be $22 which includes the meal, coffee and tea and 3 hours parking in Bruce Bishop Car Park across the road from the RSL Club. 
Cash bar available.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 19 JUNE 2018

Sergeant David opened the meeting with his usual gusto—proclaiming that the “Best Rotary Club in the Universe  was in session!”
President Alain welcomed P.D.G.   Trevor Taylor, Hon. Members  Uwe, Paul Taylor and Ian, and guest speaker Tenille Griffiths  and partner Neil Griffiths.
Uwe recognised his favourite ball game—“Foot  Ball.”
President Alain  announced  the receipt of  P.P.  Peter Gowans`resignation due to his increasing business commitments.
Fund raising during the preceding week had been most successful—over $3,000   raised through our activities.
Matters health— Great to have Cec McPaul  attending Rotary again after his lengthy health issues. Russ Hutchison became unwell toward the end of the previous week—found himself having successful  treatment in Hospital. Regrettably he will miss his planned  family  over seas trip which is about to commence.
The fines session revealed that there were very few nominations for the Annual Fellowship Cup award.  Sgt. David`s call for those who had not stepped up with nominations, should pay-up.
None did, so a flood of nominations are expected.
Pres. Alain  ran away with “Heads and Tails”.  
P.P. Bill Waller had a great “Win”.
 
In his year--Pres Alain has sought to provide assistance for local  Alzheimer's  Sufferers` Institutions.
Aged Care facilities located  on the Coast, and the assistance Rotary  has  provided at the two  2 locations ---was the theme for this evening.
P.P. Harold was the evening`s Chairman.  He  has been active with working bees at both  centres,   “Rosemary house”   and   “Cedar House” which opened in 2016. 
Bunnings have assisted Rotary, with this service work. Our out door Rotary Sun Shield is most appreciated on hot days.
Neil Griffiths' visit to the Club was again noted— He has been involved in aged care Institutions for quite some time. He was previously, a nominee  for our club's Young Achiever Award. Neil  has been promoted to Operations Manager for Queensland over seeing care facilities.
 
The newly appointed Director of both Cedar & Rosemary House, Tenille Griffiths was introduced by Harold as the guest speaker of the evening.
Points made during her address included;
 
-There are 400,000  elderly sufferers from Dementia.   Alzheimer’s is one form of  Dementia. It is a brain function issue. Sufferers become irrational  and cannot perform social tasks.
-Symptoms can develop over  as long as a period of 15 years. There is no cure  presently but there is research going on. It can be expensive to diagnose.   G.P`s often miss the early  indicators.
-Known causes include—Heart disease   Brain issues   Drug use   Alcohol  consumption    Parkinson`s Disease    Smoking    Family History   Life span is usually reduced to 5  or  7 years.   
-Maintaining  sufferer`s interests  and recognising their profiles, is considered an  important part of client`s treatment.
-3 in 10 persons over the age of 85 have it.   318 new sufferers  are diagnosed daily. There are efforts to add to the quality of the sufferers` lives & to  remove the stigma associated with the illness.
-A small dog at Cedar House has provided wonderfull therapy.  Young children are  also  appreciated by clients.
-Large Government assistance is offered.   Legal issues encountered by sufferers` is an issue.
-There is direct home  care offered to “Clients”, on the Coast.     Staffing is available for over-night respite for careers at Rosemary House. 
-The aim is to have clients remain in their own homes with assistance if possible.
-Young family members can be badly affected by elderly sufferers.
 
Harold thanked Tenille for her presentation & presented her with the Club`s  memento.
