Fellow Rotarians and friends;

DG Terry Brown has asked that we circulate details of a tour to New Zealand next year.
The Rotary Club of Pakuranga invites you to join The Ultimate 18 Day Rotary Tour of New Zealand
29th March – 15th April, 2019.
The Tour Key points and Highlights are:
 The Tour includes 2 Home hosted meals and 2 Rotary Meeting visits.
 The Tour size is limited to 26 persons. (Within a 30/33 seater coach.)
 Accommodation will be 4 to 5 star and includes all breakfasts on the Base Tour.
 A professional ‘Top Tour Guide’ will travel with you throughout the Tour.
 The Base Tour includes both the North and South Islands.
 An optional 5 day pre-tour to Northland and the Bay of Islands is also offered.
To receive a full 11 page itinerary please email Peter Hawkins: peter.hawkins@xtra.co.nz.

I have an update on the Drought Relief fund. The Orchid Society will be donating $5000.00 which brings our total to $8,000.00. I have emailed the President of Goondiwindi so hopefully they will have made progress on the disbursement to the areas where it is needed most.
I was delighted with our guest speaker this week, Flynn McFarlane, from the Young Professionals, Gold Coast. He is a very motivated young man and I was impressed that he and his colleagues have formed a group expressly to guide our city development in the future. The Q&A session after his presentation was very informative.
We have been approached by the Grill’d outlet at Pacific Fair regarding a contribution. This is the email: HOW IT WORKS: Each month, every Grill’d restaurant donates to 3 different local community groups, which are each represented by a jar. With every purchase we offer our customers a token which they are then asked to place in a jar of their choice. The group with the most tokens in their jar at the end of the month receives a donation of $300, and the other two receive $100 each.
If anyone has an objection let me know. Otherwise we will submit an application.
We have a vocational visit on Tuesday to the Fire Station. There have been many of you asking if I will be demonstrating how the pole works. You will have to turn up to find out!

Yours in Rotary
Pauline

My first experience skiing.

I was living at Tumut and working there as an assistant Engineer with the local Council. Snow fell at Kiandra approx. 1 hr drive from Tumut and they opened the Ski run. I had been to high school at Tumut previously and one the clerks who I had played football with said lets go and have a ski.

Neither of us had ever skied before however being young ,fairly fit and up for anything ,we went. We had no ski equipment or ski clothing at all so we went to the local hardware store and purchased these dark green rain coats and matching dark green rain pants ( very cheap and you can probably still buy them).

We arrived at Kiandra and hired skis and ski boots and put them on and slid /shuffled over to the ski run. At that time the ski run was very primitive affair with a long circular rope that pulled you up the hill and you had to line up and grab hold of the rope ,make sure your skis were pointing up the hill and away you went. Fortunately both of us stayed upright and up the hill we went. There was a line of skiers behind us. These skiers were all in flash ski gear, patterned jumpers, goggles, sunglasses etc.

Unfortunately I didn’t know how to control my skis or how to get off the rope pulley at the top of the little hill which was quite steep so I just fell over and sideways so that I didn’t just slide backwards down the steep hill. This was in the way of all those behind so this created a bit of angst because they all had to leave the rope before the proper drop off point.

Both of us crabbed sideways across to the middle of the ski run, turned around and took off. Well we both going very fast and straight down the hill and all the real skiers were swishing back   and forth across the slope and not nearly as fast as us. We started yelling “ look out” and all the skiers scattered out of our way. Unfortunately I got bit frightened about how fast I was going and crouched down so that I wouldn’t hurt myself if I fell off. This made me go much faster.

At the bottom of the hill was a small creek with about a six foot wide  foot bridge across it. I was going very fast and realised I didn’t know how to stop so I decided to lean over sideways onto the snow. The raincoat proved to be very slippery and I continued sliding down the hill. By some miracle I slid over the creek footbridge. I picked myself up and slid / shuffled over for another go.

A very attractive girl ( don’t tell Kay) took pity on me and showed me how to snow plough with the skis so I had some modicum of control on the next run. So I never learned how to ski properly and have no desire now to do so.
