MEMBER ANECDOTES

RUSSELL HUTCHISON

There seems to be a story to be told and anecdote to be laughed at throughout my life’s journey thus far!
However, this one anecdote sticks out in my children’s minds… they will never let me live it down.  As the story is retold time and time again the knife gets longer and the scar grows!

Many years ago between my stints as a Newsagent in Canberra and my position as Box Office Manager at the Canberra Theatre Centre I decided it would be a great idea to enrol in several cooking courses at the local TAFE during the evenings.
On one particular evening, I had worked a long day and raced straight from work to my cooking class.  At the end of class I was of course a tad tired and just threw my cooking bag into the front seat of the car eager to head home with my mind racing about the evenings class.  As I was getting into my car another car came dangerously close to my driver’s side leaving with me no choice but to jump into my car without a second thought.  However, whilst I dodged the oncoming car I promptly realised that in quickly jumping in to my car I landed on my cooking bag which was full of super sharp knives and one very pointy dangerous carving knife sliced into my tender little bottom.  I then drove with slow precision to the closest hospital as the knife was implanted in my bottom and tears raging down my face and my pride; well it went out the window. I needed the Doctor to remove the knife immediately the pain was intense and my vanity was not intact but that knife had carved its last piece of meat – that was for sure.  I can only imagine the laughter and the story telling that went on in the emergency department that evening when a middle-aged gentleman slowly limped in with a knife strategically stuck in his bottom.  Arriving home to my wife and family where I expected sympathy and all I got was continued laughter made me realise just what a silly thing I had done and had a laugh too!

Long story short; my cooking days were short lived and Diana always said I was easily recognizable due to my knife wound and to this day I still have the scar from approximately 40 years ago and my kids will continue to remind me with much hilarity about safety in the kitchen and handling of knives….

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

Rotarians contribute more than $300 million to The Rotary Foundation during its centennial year

Rotarians and friends contributed a total of $304.3 million (unaudited) to The Rotary Foundation during our historic year, a celebration of the Foundation’s 100 years of Doing Good. This amount surpassed the goal of $300 million we set to mark the centennial in 2016-17.

Your generous donations to the Annual, Endowment, and PolioPlus funds are empowering Rotary members to continue fighting disease, reducing poverty, providing clean water, promoting peace, and advancing economic development in communities all over the world.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 29 AUGUST 2017
Scribe: Neil Jones

The last Tuesday in the month fellowship meeting was held at The Hub with Chefs extrordinaire, Noel & Grahame serving up a fabulous meal comprising exquisite hamburgers with the lot and then some followed by apple pie, cream and ice-cream. Well done fellows - your efforts will top up the admin funds to offset recent losses due to low attendance numbers.

With thirty in attendance, Sergeant Kevin got things underway. President Alain welcomed all present and Les Bulluss proposed the toast (on the anniversary of the historic test win over England that led to the creation of The Ashes) to Australian Cricket and glory days gone by.

Bruce apologised that there would not be a Silver Circle draw tonight as he had left everything on his desk at work. There will now be a triple draw next week.

Following the meal and plenty of fellowship Sergeant Kevin prised some loos coin from those present and with help from Haidee conducted Heads & Tails won by Gay Cowen and the raffle won by Neil Baldwin. Bunyips for the night were Denis & Uwe.

President Alain with support from Administration Director Bob, then outlined to members the decision taken by the Board regarding meeting venue in order to overcome the significant drain on members funds resulting from the decision by the Crowne Plaza to enforce the minimum 25 meals policy.  The cost to the club over recent weeks is clearly not sustainable and immediate action was imperative. Alain announced that the meeting on 5 September would be our last at the Crowne Plaza. The meeting on 12 September will be at the Quality Inn, which for the present will be the venue for the first three meetings each month with the fourth Tuesday meeting to be held at The Hub. We will not be contracted to meetings at The Quality Inn and a review will be undertaken after a reasonable trial period and a possible future move to the new Kurrawa Surf Club will be considered once that facility is operational and firm details are available.

President Alain thanked all for attending and expressed thanks to Noel & Grahame for their culinary efforts which was endorsed by acclamation.
