I would like to wish everyone a very healthy and happy New Year. 2024 is the year of the dragon which is seen as the strongest and represents power, nobility, and success in Chinese tradition.
Thanks to Bunnings we now have some paint and rollers donated to assist us with the Lady Small Nursing Home project. Uwe has offered to paint the undercoat ready for our artist to create her masterpiece. I would love all members to get involved in painting and landscaping to make this garden area a place where dementia patients can enjoy. Another fantastic project of Broadbeach Rotary Club.
District 9620 are having their conference this year at SeaWorld Nara Resort on 8 - 10 March 2024. There is a fantastic line up of Key speakers, tickets are available for this event via the website link https://conference24.rotary9620.org/
Please join me on Tuesday 23rd January for our first official meeting this year. Mehmet and Michelle Tavli from Nerang Rotary Club will be attending this meeting to share an update of their project in Turkey.

2024-25 annual theme revealed
Rotary International President-elect Stephanie Urchick announced the 2024-25 theme, The Magic of Rotary, at the International Assembly on 8 January. The assembly is Rotary’s annual learning event for incoming governors and leaders. Urchick, a member of the Rotary Club of McMurray, Pennsylvania, USA, called on members to use the magic of Rotary to recognize and amplify the organization’s power to save lives. She also called on them to make their Rotary clubs “simply irresistible.” Read more and see the theme speech

Attendance for our first gathering for 2024 at Mermaid Bowls Club was disappointing with only five members and four partners turning out for our barefoot bowls evening and dinner.
Those attending had a most enjoyable evening. Noel & Kay and the two Neils played 10 ends of, at times, high quality bowls. Noel who is currently suffering hip problems showed off his skills with the bowling aid - a high level of expertise achieved in just 4 weeks.
Some post game drinks and fellowship was followed by a most enjoyable bistro meal. An added bonus for those attending, all meals at the bistro on Saturday night were half price.

The other day a lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy; and he looked at her quizzically and said, "What the heck is a Jalopy?" He had never heard of the word jalopy! She knew she was old ... but not that old.
Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory, Right as rain and as Happy as Larry after you read this and chuckle.
About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included: Don't touch that dial, carbon copy, you sound like a broken record, and hung out to dry.
Back in the olden days we put on our best bib and tucker or bag of fruit, and dressed to the nines.
Strike me pink, Holy Moley!
We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley ; and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a boofhead, knucklehead, a nincompoop . Not for all the tea in China, or rice for that matter!
We wake up from a short nap, and before we can say, "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!” or, "This is a fine kettle of fish!"
Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we've left behind.
Where have all those great phrases gone?
Long gone: Pshaw, The milkman did it. Don't forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Fiddlesticks! I'll see you in the funny farm. Wake up and smell the roses.
Leaves us to wonder where Superman will find a phone booth...
