Jim Hawkins proposed the toast to all teachers and advised that his daughters also went to Benowa School.
Then President Peter welcomed the guests including, Renee Budden, Leah Fineran, Sylvie Grundy, James Knight, Gay Cowan, Pat Curr, Desley Davies,Christine Jones, Denise Jordan,Marie Jorden, Haidee Diaz and Roslyn Tomlinson
The President called for reports from the attending Board members and Neil Jones gave an update on the Malaria Vaccine Project advising that over 400,000 people (mainly children)per year die from Malaria. Hope Island, Southport and Broadbeach Rotary clubs initiated the project and Neil (as their treasurer) stated that over $1,320,000 has been raised over the past years and testing 18 months ago showed that the vaccine was effective but needed to be administered within a very short period of time after manufacture. A new version which can be freeze dried and thus transported anywhere has been developed and trials are currently being undertaken on animals and it is hoped will be ready for human tests in 3022.
Neil Baldwin then reiterated that members wanting Christmas cakes and puddings need to be place orders before Friday week. Neil will send a final email with full details to all members shortly.
John Monks then advised that there had been an attempt to break into the Hub causing some damage which he has repaired.
The President advised that there will not be a meeting next week being the first Tuesday in the month.
Neil Baldwin advised that the District AGM is to be held on 14th November and that he would not be able to attend – it was suggested that our AG Sheila be appointed proxy for our Club. A motion to this effect was moved Neil Jones, seconded Peter Dimond and carried unanimously by members present.
The Sergeant then had a fine session with Uwe Seifert and David O’Dwyer collecting from those who had not signed in via the Qld app and those who could not advise when the Hub was finished and opened – the date being 10th December, 2013.
Pauline then introduced her guests, Leah Fineran, Renae Budden, Sylvie Grundy & James Knight (two teachers and two students from Benowa High school respectively) who had undertaken a project to write a book in a day. The project was commenced five years ago and supports children with cancer. To date 8,307 students have undertaken the task, which includes all ages including adults.
The subject for the project is given to the students in the morning to be completed that day (5,000 words in total). Students take the reins for a chapter and each year there is a different subject.
James spoke on how Benowa Creative Club is not just a one-person job and was a great way to make new friends. They are generally mixed teams from years 7 to 12. Many different ideas are raised but they eventually come together.
Sylvia spoke and the teacher Renae advised that they were high achieving students involved. Roslyn queried how they were able to achieve continuity when a number of students were involved.
Pauling then presented the Rotary glasses to Leah and Renae.
The door ticket prize was won by Robyn
The heads and tails was won by Sylvie who will donate the wine to her mother.
John Monks advised that tea and coffee was available and the president closed the meeting.
