The following is an update from DG Terry regarding the District 9640 drought relief fund.
BURRUMBUTTOCK HAY RUNNERS – IS ON THE MOVE.
I have been advised that the next Hay Run by BHR will take place on the Australia Day long weekend in January 2019. The destination is Quilpie QLD. It is anticipated that 240/260 truck will be in the convoy. They will deliver approx 15,000 large round bales of hay. The fund from District 9640 has just exceeded $90,000, truly a magnificent effort from our clubs and their supporters. This donation will fund 25% of the Hay Run cost. Remember that the hay, use of trucks and drivers is all donated, the cost is for the fuel which will be approx $360,000.

Thanks to Membership Director Nigel for his presentation on membership at this week’s meeting. I was impressed that he remembered so much of the detail without having to refer to notes. Noel made a good point when he said that many organisations and churches are experiencing the same drop off in membership. The presentation showed that there are many innovative ways to seek out new members but it is not one size fits all.
We all enjoyed the cake to celebrate David O’Dwyer’s latest big O birthday. Happy birthday again David from all the club.

We have a great group coming to the Christmas party. It is a bit different his year as it is more casual than usual but it will afford a great opportunity to mingle and not be stuck at one table. I am sure you will be pleased with the food and I am really looking forward to it.
See you then.

Yours in Rotary
Pauline

Born on the December 24th 1947
Education summary: Bell Street Primary school, Northcote High School to Matriculation, Advanced studies RMIT Accounting Certificate, Caulfield institute Diploma of Business Studies
Work History: At 18 years of age I entered the workforce as a trainee Accountant with Felt & Textiles later to be known as F & T Industries and over a period of 10 years worked in their foot ware division for 5 years and their plastics & flooring divisions for a further 5 years.
I then moved to Pyrox  Limited and assumed the position of Cost Accountant and later was promoted to the position of Group Accountant for the expanded Pyrox-Sietel Group. They were manufacturers of Domestic and Commercial gas appliances and importers of Siemens colour televisions. After a large management restructure I could see there was no future there for me so I moved on to Australian General Electric as Cost Accountant.
My job description was to pinpoint how and why the company was losing five million dollars in manufactured appliances every 6 months. After 12 months of tracking all data movements I discovered the losses were occurring in the N.S.W. branch. Upon reporting this to the M.D. he dispatched the report to his bottom drawer. Three months later and after much deliberation I decided on a career change.
I applied successfully for the position of General Manager of Exclusive Food Houses and over a period of 18 years provided the owner with competent back up in all areas of the business. He did the overseas travel and product sourcing whilst I was the homebody looking after the day to day running of the business.
Towards the end of my time there I tried to foster a relationship with another importer based in N.S.W. which could have been very profitable for both companies however the owner was reluctant to pursue the arrangement.
This left me frustrated and when the opportunity to take up the offer to establish the Melbourne division of F Mayer Imports I had no hesitation to take on board the challenge. My contract allowed me to work up ownership in the business to 49% and after 11 years and growing the business from 0 to 18 million turn over it was time for me to retire which happened on my 60th birthday.
Since then I have done volunteer work whilst in Melbourne with food recovery group Second Bite and also the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital.
I hope that this profile is helpful in understanding my Education & working life.

Rotary Information Weekly

December is  Rotary’s Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Rotary members have played a key role in bringing the world to the brink of polio eradication. Our members have not only helped end polio in 122 countries but also created a system for addressing many other health priorities, like Ebola. Rotary clubs lead efforts to fight diseases like malaria, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes. Clubs also focus on disease prevention by providing health education and bringing routine hearing, vision, and dental care to those in need.
Our Club can be very proud of our contribution in this area of focus including our current Alzheimer's project and partnership with the Malaria Vaccine Project.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING 11 DECEMBER 2018

Scribe:  Neil Jones

Sergeant Les Bulluss opened the meeting stating it was the "345th day of the year of our Pauline" and also International Mountain Day for which he provided a host of irrelevant trivia before inviting Bill Rex to propose the toast of the day. Bill chose to toast our proposed new District 9620.
President Pauline welcomed all in attendance and requested all attending the Christmas Party next week to pay in advance as she did not want anyone having to worry about collecting funds on the night.
Noel Phingsthorne took the opportunity to sell some tickets in the Mermaid Beach Christmas raffle and thanked members for their support.
Sergeant Les began his Sergeant's session with a tale about his work experience at the Catholic Church in Guyra. John Curr and David O'Dwyer were Bunyips (apparently they were Bunyips at this meeting in 1914)
David O'Dwyer was called forth and a cake produced to celebrate his 70th Birthday.  Russ Hutchison spoke glowingly of his 38 year friendship with David and all joined in singing Happy Birthday.

President Pauline introduced our own Membership Director, Nigel Hyland to speak on the multi district membership meeting which she and Nigel had attended on 4 November.
Nigel presented a Power Point "You Reap What You Sow" given by Mark Huddleston which aimed to challenge us all in relation to membership. The number of Rotarians in Australia has declined by just over 30% over the last 20 years while over the same period the average age of Rotarians has increased significantly to 71 years.  Over 85% of Rotarians are aged over 50 and somewhat resistant to change but change we must if Rotary is to survive and prosper.
A key question is "are meetings effective and a productive use of volunteers time?"  He suggests "less meeting and more doing".  Many other points were highlighted but Nigel emphasised that change is a matter for the members of each club to decide.
Nigel also covered highlights from a presentation "Learn the secrets to social media success" and concluded by showing the video of the Ashmore Rotary Cup.

President Pauline thanked Nigel and presented him with our usual speakers memento.
