Hello Fellow Rotarians

On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of welcoming Councillor Paul Taylor, thank you for visiting Paul in our new premises.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming our Guest speaker Brenton Rickard. Brenton is the Manager for Sport Services for the Commonwealth games 2018 and a former champion swimmer, having won  six individual Commonwealth Games medals, three World championship Medals and two Olympic medals.  Brenton gave a presentation about his  life as an Olympian and the sacrifices that were required to perform at an Elite level and how now he has had to adapt to life after reaching those dizzy heights during his distinguished career. Brenton also brought along his Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for us to get up close and personal with and which was appreciated by all.
Great to see Nancy back from a long sabbatical in Canada.
Thank you to the members who have come forward to assist Pauline with the 45th Anniversary preparations.
As mentioned at the meeting our visiting Rotarians from Sister club Taraunga have enquired about being home hosted whilst here. Please advise if you will be able to assist. It appears at this stage that we could have 8 visitors from Tauranga.

Ray Milton advised that POOTY preparations are nearly complete and has asked for members book their seats for what will be a great evening.

We have the President of Surfers Sunrise as guest speaker this coming Tuesday which promises to be another great eveing of fellowship and fun at the Broadbeach Rotary Club.

Look forward to welcoming all Rotarians.
Best regards

Alain

SECRETARY REPORT - Tony Lewis

What is the Role of the Secretary?
The role of the Secretary is to support the President in ensuring the smooth functioning of the Board in particular and the Club in general.
The following is a very brief overview of the Secretary’s role in our Club.
In this Club information from some, or at times most, of the following are received and are required to be dealt with on a daily basis. They include but are not limited to: District, RI, RDU, and the Public, Board members, members in general.
In order to ensure all issues and records are kept up to date, it is essential that they are addressed immediately. For example a membership enquiry or a visitor enquiring about attending a meeting. Thus if done correctly, the role of Secretary in this Club requires 10 - 12 hours work per week. This can increase at the time of a Board meeting
If left unattended the role can easily “get out of hand”

In summary, the Secretary is responsible for, but not limited to:
  1. Ensuring meetings are effectively organised and minuted
  2. Maintaining effective records and administration
  3. Communication and correspondence
  4. Scheduling, advising and recording of the AGM
  5. Reporting to appropriate Government agencies
  6. Daily Duties
  • Check Clubs Gmail account and act on content
  • Reply to correspondence
  • Attend to incoming mail via Clubs PO Box
  • Attend to District 9640 mail and Email - about 10 - 12 per week are received
This might not seem a lot, but it is reasonably time consuming.
Most of the time the Secretary is the first contact a person has with the Club and thus must create an excellent image of the Club
The secret to ensuring the role is successful - organisation and time management, never get behind in day to day issues.
Other duties currently performed that are not an assigned role of the Secretary include, the preparation and framing of all Certificates presented by the Club such as Police Officer of the Year, Young Achiever, Honorary membership, community service awards, certificates of service including the outgoing president.

ALL IN A DAYS WORK BY Peter Tomlinson.

The Boomerang Farm at Mudgeeraba was a Tourist park, where we taught the tourists how to throw and catch our exceptionally well-made boomerangs. The tourists could throw their newly purchased boomerangs on the many throwing fields, visit our small Museum of Aboriginal artefacts and purchase the many souvenirs that we sold in the boomerang shaped shop.

The entry to the Boomerang Farm was off Springbrook Road, down Boomerang Road, over a small bridge (over Mudgeeraba Creek), and into the tourist car park. It was easy to hear and see cars coming down Boomerang Road.  In the wet season of 1981 Springbrook and ourselves at The Boomerang Farm received record rains. Once the rain eased Mudgeeraba Creek would recede quickly, unless there were very heavy rain at Springbrook. It was not uncommon for us to have the bridge over Mudgeeraba Creek flooded even though we had no rain.

It was one of these days, it was sunny yet the bridge was flooded so the tourist park was closed.  I noticed a car coming down Boomerang Road to go into The Boomerang Farm. The car never parked in the carpark and never backed up the hill, (after getting to the flooded bridge). Something was wrong. I moved quickly and took the Land Rover to investigate. I checked that there were no people or car in the tourist area. I drove on to view the bridge and to my horror and concern, I saw two men sitting on top of the bonnet of a rented Datsun Car and the car was drifting down Mudgeeraba Creek.

The two men were yelling out in no uncertain terms that they were in trouble (even though I could not understand a word they said). The car drifted on with the two men now sitting on the roof. The car came to an abrupt holt in a deep hole in the creek bed and settled. The tall slim man jumped into the water and made his way onto the Eastern Bank alive, safe and well. The shorter fatter man stayed sitting on the roof of the partially submerged car with Mudgeeraba Creek quickly rising.

Roslyn and I waved and called to the two men. They could not understand us and we could not understand them. The fellow on the Eastern Bank kept jumping into the air and insisted his friend jump into the water but the fellow sitting on the roof of the car was not moving. The water kept rising. We rescued the fellow sitting on the roof of the car by getting a rope to him (thank goodness for my roping skills) and with the rope around him we quickly pulled him to the creek bank, safe and well. Just in time as the car was soon covered in water.

We let the two men yell to each other as we had one on our side of Mudgeeraba Creek and the other was on the Eastern Side. (We called the Eastern side Rob King’s (From Rob Kings Nursery). A builder was building Rob Kings New Horse Stables and came down to the creek to see what was going on as a terrible commotion was being made. Luckily for us all, the builder spoke a little German and could settle the fellow on his side of the Creek and took him to Rob and Sandra Kings house. We took our fellow to our house and communications were a problem as our fellow could only speak German. We got our fellow bathed, gave him my clothes to wear, made him warm, fed him and gave him lots of hot coffee. We rang the Kings and our fellow spoke to his friend which helped him settle.

We suggested that the two men contact the car hire people and let them know what had happened to the car. The car rental firm said they had no record of the car being rented to these people. We suggested that they contact the German Consulate in Sydney. When they rented the car, they had to hand over their pass ports to the Car Rental Company. The Germany Embassy in Sydney at that time had a staff of thirteen handling accidents by German Drivers in Australia and helped our newly rescued fellow and his mate. Later in the day the German Embassy contacted me to advise that our rescued men had written off three cars in three days. (An accident in Sydney, an accident in Brisbane and The Mudgeeraba Creek Incident). We suggested to our fellow and again by phone to the other fellow that they travel by bus, train or plane in Australia from now on.

Apparently our two German Tourists stopped their car in the flooded Mudgeeraba Creek so they could take photos to send home. They wanted to show how they drove through the harsh, unforgiving Australia environment. The tourists were washed away in the process of taking their photos. Mudgeeraba Creek rises and falls very quickly, so when the Creek fell we could retrieve their cloths and possessions out of the now semi submerged car. We washed, dried and cleaned the rescued men’s possessions. We gave our fellow an Australian Navy Duffel bag to carry his possessions in as his bag was a total write off. We wished the men well and said good bye as the Kings drove our fellow and his friend into Surfers to catch a bus to continue their trip of Australia.

Two weeks later the Hire Car Firm dispatched a crane and truck to rescue the car from Mudgeeraba Creek and took it away. When they pulled the car out of Mudgeeraba Creek the fellow in charge said, “this car is a total write off”. We all agreed.

In case you were wondering. We never heard from these Tourists ever again.

There is lots to be learnt from this anecdote.

Sargent Les Bulluss opened the meeting.  From his research on ‘This time in years past”, he reminded us that Tina Rambaldini’s funeral occurred this time two years ago.

Bill Rex gave in an impromptu toast to “The Hub” and those who made it happen.

President Alain welcomed our partners and honorary member Ian.  President Alain presented Keith Hawton with a certificate to mark his rank as honorary member of our club. Keith has been in Rotary for 60 years and a long-standing and respected member of our club. Loraine accompanied Keith.

No guest speaker but Les conducted two trivia quizzes. One on the British Commonwealth and the other on science of the quantum, nuclear, astrophysics and other applied science which was in keeping for the high intelligence of our members.

With no director’s reports, Sargent Les with the help of bunyp Rex did their monetary extractions from unsuspecting members.  Les excelled himself with his two jokes for the night.

A father was surprised that their child gene’s matched  to neither his wife nor himself after a DNA test was conducted.  He said to his wife, “How could that happen”?  She said, “Don’t you remember?  When we were leaving the hospital, you noticed the child had a dirty nappy and you told me to go back in and change it”.

A child got lost in a large crown and could not find his father.  He asked a policeman for help. The copper said, “What’s he like?  Beer and women the child replied”.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

A lady walks into a bar and sees a really cute guy sitting at the counter. She goes over and asks him what he is drinking. "Magic Beer", he says. She thinks he's a little crazy, so she walks around the bar, but after noticing that there is no one else worth talking to, she goes back to the man sitting at the bar and says, “That isn't really Magic Beer, is it?" "Yes, I'll show you."
He takes a drink of the beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
The lady can't believe it: "I bet you can't-do that again."
"Oh yea?" He smirks.
He takes another drink of beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
She is amazed and immediately asks for a magic beer of her own.
The guy says to the bartender, "Give her one of what I'm having."
She gets her drink, takes a gulp of the beer, jumps out the window... and immediately plummets 30 stories down.
The bartender looks at the guy and says, "You know something, Superman? You're a terrible person when you're drinking."

While trying to explain to our six-year-old daughter how much technology had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.
Wide-eyed, our daughter asked, "How big was the mouse?"

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.
Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice."
"Oh please, Mom," replied the daughter, "if he wasn't nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?"

A police recruit was asked during the exam, 'What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?'
He answered, 'Call for backup.'

One day I went through a STOP sign.
The cops stopped me and asked why I had driven through the sign, I told them I didn’t believe everything I read

Q: How many tickles does it take to make an octopus laugh?
A: Ten-tickles!!!

Q: What did Cinderella say when her photos did not show up?
A: Someday my prints will come!

Q: What starts with a P, ends with an E and has thousands of letters in it?
A: Post Office.

Q: Why did the boy put candy under his pillow?
A: Because he wanted sweet dreams.

Q: What's the best parting gift?
A: A comb.
