APRIL IS CHILD & MATERNAL HEALTH MONTH
Child and Maternal Health is one of the six areas of focus of The Rotary Foundation with the key aims of:
○ reducing mortality and morbidity rates for children under age five
○ reducing maternal mortality and morbidity rates
○ improving mothers' and children's access to essential medical services, trained community health leaders and health care providers
○ supporting studies related to maternal and child health by career-minded professionals
Broadbeach is certainly playing its part in supporting this area of focus through our partnership with Southport Club and District 9640 in the Malaria Vaccine Project which was very successfully launched last Monday at The Institute for Glycomics, Griffith University by His Excellency Major General Sir Peter Cosgrove, Governor General of Australia.
Malaria is the cause of hundreds of thousands of deaths in young children and pregnant women each and every year making the Malaria Vaccine Project extremely relevant and important to humanity.
Our goal is to raise $500k to facilitate clinical trials of the vaccine and it is pleasing to report that since the initial contributions of $5k from Broadbeach and Southport Clubs, our total is now $100k.
