Fellow Rotarian and Friends.

A great night last week at the Hub, with the profits going to Polio Plus.  The wild and woolly weather was a bit haphazard on the day with the first of several stormy days, meaning we had some late cancellations.  Overall, with the movie night, donations and evening our club contribution to Polio Plus has so far reached $1165.80!

Thank you to the volunteers for cleaning the Hub on the day, Chris’ board of fare was excellent.  Chris also made a donation to Polio Plus on the night whilst fill in Sergeant Noel H cleaned up the wallets of most, contributing to the cause.

The club has applied for two grants, one to replace the van and the other for Hub improvements.  Thank you so much to PP Neil Jones for his work on the grants, to Harold for the replacement van quotes and to all involved.

The Hub was recently pest controlled by Wallaby Pest Control.  They donated that service, saving us around $200.    Appreciation to Andrew McTaggart for arranging and John Monks for opening up when they were there.  If anyone is looking for pest control, please consider supporting Wallaby Pest Control, https://www.wallabypestcontrol.com.au/ 55646630.  I've written to them, thanking them for their assistance.

This month is Foundation Month.  Directors Nayer and Nasser have already sent our the Christmas Cake orders and shortly an invoice for your consideration of a voluntary payment to the Foundation as per previous years. Our Hub event on 1 December which Noel and Grahame will be catering will be supporting the Rotary Foundation.

Good luck on the Cup, our next meeting at the hotel is on 10 November with Dr Graham presenting on the Pentecost project progress.  A reminder of the AGM to be held on the 17th.

Until then.

Yours in Rotary

Les

Major achievement focus of Rotary's World Polio Day event

Rotary’s 2020 World Polio Day Online Global Update program on 24 October hails this year’s historic achievement in polio eradication: Africa being declared free of the wild poliovirus.

Paralympic medalist and TV presenter Ade Adepitan, who co-hosts this year’s program, says that the eradication of polio in Africa was personal for him. “Since I was born in Nigeria, this achievement is close to my heart,” says Adepitan, a polio survivor who contracted the disease as a child. “I’ve been waiting for this day since I was young.”

He notes that, just a decade ago, three-quarters of all of the world’s polio cases caused by the wild virus were contracted in Africa. Now, more than a billion Africans are safe from the disease. “But we’re not done,” Adepitan cautions. “We’re in pursuit of an even greater triumph — a world without polio. And I can’t wait.”

Rotary Foundation Trustee Geeta Manek, who co-hosts the program with Adepitan, says that World Polio Day is an opportunity for Rotary members to be motivated to “continue this fight.”

She adds, “Rotarians around the world are working tirelessly to support the global effort to end polio.”

The future of the fight against polio

Rotary’s challenge now is to eradicate the wild poliovirus in the two countries where the disease has never been stopped: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Routine immunizations must also be strengthened in Africa to keep the virus from returning there.

To eradicate polio, multiple high-quality immunization campaigns must be carried out each year in polio-affected and high-risk countries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s necessary to maintain populations’ immunity against polio while also protecting health workers from the coronavirus and making sure they don’t transmit it.

Rotary has contributed more than $2.1 billion to polio eradication since it launched the PolioPlus program in 1985, and it’s committed to raising $50 million each year for polio eradication activities. Because of a 2-to-1 matching agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, that means that, each year, $150 million goes toward fulfilling Rotary’s promise to the children of the world: No child will ever again suffer the devastating effects of polio.

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 27TH October 2020

Scribe: Jim Hawkins

A very good turn out once again this evening with a good number of members and guests enjoying the camaraderie.

President Les started the evening off by introducing John Monks to propose the toast.
John requested us to raise our glasses and toast to the present and future continued success of our “Hub” and mentioned that it something of which we can be proud and the envy of many other clubs in D9640.

President Les then welcomed honorary member Kevin O’Brien and those partners attending.  He then advised that the inclement weather in the hours leading up to the meeting had led to the cancellation of the expected attendance of the Cowen & Hutchison groups; however with the proceeds of this night being to The Foundation – they had volunteered to remit their dinner fees to the club account. Hopefully our other late withdrawals (which are understandable in the circumstances) will do likewise.

Les then called on Kev. O’Brien to come forward to be presented with his Certificate of Honorary Membership to our club, along to strong applause from other attendees.
Next, Les called Robyn Brown & Kay Hodges forward to present them with their Paul Harris Fellow medallions that had arrived recently.

Les reminded us that we have been given another couple of days with Bunnings Southport for a sausage sizzle, November 21st ... and December 12th.  There are a few shifts still needing to be filled for those fundraisers, so if you can help - go to our website and enter your name on the SS roster form on the top right area of the home page.
He also reminded us that Surfers Sunrise are celebrating their 10,000th wheelchair donation on the 14th November.

Thanks also go to Robyn for arranging our Christmas Party which will be held at the Surfers Paradise Golf Club on the 15 December, the price for the evening is $25.00 per head but the final arrangements are to be confirmed shortly, however we have now paid a deposit to secure this booking.

As Andrew McTaggart was not in attendance, there was no Silver Circle draw this evening.

Our stand-in Sergeant decreed that as the night was to benefit the Rotary foundation, his recommendation was that everyone in attendance should donate $5 and that would keep everything simple.  Our bunyips were flat out collecting many of these - but that however didn’t stop Noel from proceeding to issue many other fines for random misdemeanours.
Nasser won the raffle and Robyn won the Heads and Tails for the 2nd week in a row.

President Les then had the floor with the opportunity to fill us in on his experience in 2004 as a member of the G.S.E. team to India.

Les had a comprehensive array of photos from that visit documenting a 6 weeks period from January 4th. to February 11th. that year.

Of course there were many experiences over that period, some of the highlights being:
  • With members of the Rotary Club of Calcutta City, to a Humanity hospital,
  • A visit to a special school,
  • Attending a Hindu child rice introduction ceremony –something akin to a baptism,
  • A memorable day fishing in the Ganges river,
  • Attending a local district conference,
  • A visit to the home of Indian cricket – “Eden Gardens”,
  • One memorable picture was of an Internet Café in a poor area in rural India

The group then move onto Nepal where further Rotary fellowship was experienced, one highlight in particular being a flight close to Mt. Everest that provided a very good view on the day, as it is more often clouded with mist obstructing the magnificence of that area.

It was obvious that the trip was a memorable experience for Les and the other team members, and a key aspect in influencing Les to have eventually become a full member of Rotary International, leading to his current position as President of our own club.

Our members and partners showed their appreciation to the effort that Les had put in to familiarise us all with those times.

•    How does Moses make tea?  Hebrews it.

•    England has no kidney bank, but it does have a Liverpool.

•    I tried to catch some fog, but I mist.
