Fellow Rotarians and Friends.

For those who may have missed my email, on behalf of the club I pass on our condolences to the family our Charter President Elect and past President, Jim Oxenford who passed away last week.  I never had the pleasure of meeting Jim, however those who knew him have fond memories indeed.

The Solar installation is moving ahead, hopefully installed in the not too distant future.  It’ll reduce our costs considerably, we estimate at least $1000 annually, money that can be directed into front line service projects such as the scooters.

Thanks to the sizzlers who have volunteered for next week, the last of this Rotary Year.  The long range forecast, which generally means nothing is for fine and sunny.  Bunnings have relaxed their entry and exit rules so hopefully more foot traffic at that end of the carpark.

The application for a Global Grant for the Vanuatu Health Centre Project has been accepted by Rotary International. A great achievement and demonstration of co-operation between the three sponsor clubs, being Broadbeach, Surfers Sunrise and Gold Coast.  Many thanks to those who have been involved, especially Dr Graham whose passion for the project knows no bounds.

This week we will be hearing from Gold Coast Passport Rotary Club, I must confess I know little of how it works.  I’m told that last week's trivia questions may have been a bit too taxing, my fault. However, the night was a great success with over $600 raised to offset the solar costs beyond the GCCC grant.  Thank you to Grahame and Noel who cooked up a gastronomic storm!

Until next week.

Yours in Rotary.

Les

VALE PP JAMES LESLIE OXENFORD

It is with deep sadness that we confirm the death of Charter Member and Past President Jim Oxenford on 17 May 2021.
Jim, who was in his 90th year was the club's third president (1974/75)
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jim's family at this sad time.

SCOOTER REPORT

There are currently  51 scooters on the road with the introduction  of 2 new recipients during the past month.
A number of scooters are on standby and are currently undergoing rehab to ensure safe running conditions as they have not been used for sometime.
The new van is proving to be outstanding in relation to the ease of handling scooters with two side doors. The van has the ability to carry 4 scooters,  2 normal size scooters and 2 smaller scooters.
Thank you to Grace at Bunnings for the donation of two floor mats for the van.
The second speaker at the club meeting on the 27th April donated 60 carry bags (some with novels) for distribution to our scooter recipients. We require the help of all scooter minders to assist in the distribution of these items.

FROM OUR MEETING ON 25 MAY 2021

Scribe: Pauline Armstrong
It was an informal evening at the Hub chaired by Alain in Les’s absence.
Alain welcomed Rotarians and guests and opened the meeting.
He invited Hon member Kevin O’Brien to propose the toast. Kevin asked us to join him in a toast to the Olympics to be held this year in Japan.
Neil Jones was acting Sergeant and said what a special night it was to have Russ Hutchison and Honorary members Ian Cowen, Kevin O'Brien and Uwe Seifert present and arranged a special photo to note the occasion.
Jim Hawkins took a bow for being successful in his application for a grant of $8500 to install a solar electricity system at the Mauna Health Centre Project, Pentecost Island, Vanuatu.
The food was then served by the chefs of the evening, Noel and Graham, who absolutely excelled themselves. The steaks were delicious, and Ian and Gay were catered for with chicken.
Dessert was served and the chefs were congratulated on serving such a delightful meal.
The raffles were won by John Monks and Alex Jordan.
Andrew drew the Silver Circle and Nayer Kaviani and Cindy Bulluss were the winners.
Neil then conducted the trivia quiz which left a lot of us questioning President Les’s musical appreciation. It was a lot of fun but no table got more than 50%.
The winners were awarded with chocolate.
Alain closed the meeting at 8.05.

WEEKLY LAUGHS
Some interesting observations:
I don’t always go the extra mile, but when I do it’s because I missed my exit.
My goal for 2020 was to lose 10 kilos. Only have 14 to go.
A recent study has found women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it.
Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag pile carpet to change the TV channel.
I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented. I forgot where I was going with this.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older… this is not what I expected.
Never sing in the shower! Singing leads to dancing, dancing leads to slipping, and slipping leads to paramedics seeing you naked in the shower. So remember…Don’t sing!

A police recruit was asked during the exam, 'What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?'
He answered, 'Call for backup.'

A newspaper reporter was writing a feature story about prison life and was interviewing one of the prisoners. ‘Do you watch much television here?’
“Only the daytime shows,” the inmate said. “At night we’re locked in our cells and don’t see any television.”
“That’s too bad,” said the reporter. “But I do think it’s nice that the warden lets you watch it in the daytime.”
“What do you mean, nice?” the inmate said. “That’s part of the punishment.”

Q: What happens to a refrigerator when you pull its plug?
A: It loses its cool.

Q: Where do you go to replace a missing chess piece?
A: The Pawn Shop.

Q: What did the big watch hand say to the small hand?
A: Got a minute?

Q: What do you get if you don't clean your mirror?
A: A dirty look.

Q: What do you call donating your body to a medical school?
A: A Dead Give-away!
