Fellow Rotarians & Friends,

Presidents Report 17/09/19 Our listed Guest Speaker, Kirsten Payne needed to postpone her address at the last moment due to a travel hold up in New Zealand. However we will reschedule her presentation regarding ‘Freedom of the press, Wikileaks and Julian Assange’ However what a great presentation from Nigel Hyland of ‘The Man Behind the Badge’. [I and the Club are grateful to Nigel that he agreed to his presentation with little time to prepare.] Nigel has some very impressive life time achievements to his name including being nominated to the Tasmanian AFL Hall of Fame, an OAM for service to the community including raising more than $2 million dollars for charity and also as an athletic coach to Olympic level standard. Nigel is in the elite category of marathon runner with a best time of 2 hours and 27 minutes. [It is an extremely difficult race to run. In my own 14 marathons I have never been able to better 3 hours 19 minutes so sub 3 hours is very impressive.] Great to welcome Pam Hawkins, Bill White, honorary Rotarians Uwe and Ian and guest of Noel Phingsthorne, Cliff Harmsworth. This month of September is Rotary ‘education, literacy’ month. Broadbeach has and is doing well with the Robotics project and the Benowa High School book project. Yours in Rotary

Yours in Rotary Service.

Graham

SECRETARY REPORT - Les Bulluss

The decline of snail mail and increase in emails is certainly not without it challenges as club Secretary.  I check the mail box weekly, and quite often to quote Mother Hubbard, ‘the cupboard is bare’.  However, the instant delivery of email certainly ensures clubs are informed and up to date on issues which does aid us, by being abreast of issues in a timely manner.  The electronic age is not without its risks though, even DG Harry has been hacked and we are now getting emails purporting to be from him, which are quite obviously not.  Whilst I am one of the younger members in the club, I remember getting letters in the post before the electronic age without links to click on, something that was beyond the capacity of a generous Nigerian Prince or widowed benefactor from South Asia, oh for the good old days!

With President Grahams year nearing the end of its first quarter, I am turning my mind to what Broadbeach Rotary Club ‘Year of Les’ may envisage.  In that regard, I have pre PETS in November and no doubt more training, consultations and conversations to come with DGE Andy prior to the 20-21 year!  For anyone interested, https://my.rotary.org has some great on line resources and easy to follow information guides.

How lucky are we to live in the lucky country!

John Monks' story last week caused me to reminisce over my Cultural Exchange to Philippines this year, many fond memories, but I seem to continually reflect to one particular meeting which highlighted the challenges their country has over ours, even at a time where fires burn out of control and the country suffers significant drought, we have relative safety.

Monday 25 March 2019.  My itinerary - Visit Department of Local Government.  Doesn't exactly inspire excitement, but any day was a good day learning more.  Aris of RC of San Bartolome was my host, as usual, a champion, and off we went into the traffic to our destination.  The building was plain.  Security was tight, as it was generally, and after progressing through four security checkpoints and signing in each time, I was finally escorted to an office which upon entry, was met by a formidable man who instantly commanded respect, surrounded by artefacts and emblems of many countries and areas depicting his overall importance.

The gentleman who allowed me an audience, was Martin Dino, who had been appointed by President DuTerte to the Department of the Interior and Local Government as "Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs".  (A Barangay is a local government area, think City's and Shires).  After initially being told how he was running to be the President, but stepped aside to let his DuTerte become same, he immediately set about discussing his vision for the forty odd thousand Barangays, and the officials (police and public servants), all six million of them, under his control.

He was strongly opposed to corruption at all levels.  He (and President DuTerte) were strong on getting the country moving again, particularly after President Marcos bled out the coffers in his 18 years of Coups and shoe bills.  There is little progressive infrastructure.  Islamic State were active in the South where Marshall law had been implemented.  The entire country of 7000 islands was surrounded by international and Open borders.  China is building naval based in the South China sea, traditionally Philippines main fishing grounds, and taking affirmative action to let the fisherman know it.  Submarines loaded with drugs entering the country from Asia, requiring affirmative action against drug dealers (?) which is totally supported by everyone else I met.  And rebels again becoming active in central Philippines as the President had approved the importation of rice, to the country that twenty years previously was Asia's largest producer, and now the lowest...  Needless to say, I was somewhat blown away not only by the issues he was dealing with, but also that he was sharing it with me!

His later remarks were made real when we were visiting a water buffalo dairy (owned by a Rotarian) in Cabanatuan, which is a major rice growing area.  I was standing in a rice field with the manager doing the best we could with limited English to have a discussion about rice growing.  When we drove away later that day, I found out that he had been a senior rebel who had a reputation for wiping out a section of army on his own (I would never have picked it).  The previous week, the most senior rebels had visited him in the middle of the night to recall him to take up the reignite rebel activity due to the rice issue.  He now believed that the army who ran intelligence on him would know that and were likely to take drastic action against him.  If he didn't go, the rebels would probably take drastic action against him.  To a man who just wanted to live in peace on his farm with his wife and two children....

We really do live in a lucky country!

Nigel has had an extremely busy life.
As a youngster in his home state of Tasmania Nigel was involved in athletics for a number of years before moving onto rowing and became a cox for several years winning many awards, including representing the state of Tasmania for many years. He became a very good runner and over the years became involved in umpiring AFL ,football, to date 562 games in Tasmania and now Qld. I watched Nigel umpiring last year on the Gold Coast, including a couple of finals games. As a runner in Tasmania he competed 25 Charity Relay races between Cascade brewery in Hobart and Boags brewery in Launceston.
Nigel moved to Queensland and joined Redlands Rotary Club, becoming quite involved in all activities. Nigel decided to move to the Gold Coast where he joined the Rotary Club of Broadbeach and still continues to run, umpire AFL football and coach athletes. As a runner he was involved in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. WEEKLY LAUGHS

"I felt like my body had gotten totally out of shape so I sought my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for pensioners [seniors]. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotard on, the class was over!"

I'm addicted to placebos. I'd give them up, but it wouldn't
make any difference.
-------------------------------------
A tough old cowboy once counseled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on his oatmeal every morning.
The grandson did this religiously and lived to the age of 110. He left 4 children, 20 grand-children, 30 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grand-children and a fifty-foot hole where the crematorium used to be.

Q: Why did the student wear glasses in math class?
A: Because it helps to improve division.

Q: Why didn't horses like Theodore Roosevelt?
A: Because he was a Rough Rider.

Q: What is it that even the most careful person overlooks?
A: Their nose!

Q: What's the most musical part of a chicken?
A: The drumstick!

Q: Why do birds fly south in the winter?
A: Because it's too far to walk.

Q: What do ducks watch on TV?
A: Duck-umentaries!
