Fellow Rotarians and Friends,
It was indeed an honour to induct Maria Padilla into the club last Tuesday night. Welcome to Broadbeach Rotary Maria, we look forward to your long association with the club.  We were also treated to the Rock O’Keefe story last week, fascinating and its great to know more about not only his service club history, but life’s journey as well. Thank you Rock.

Next week we are at the Hub, Grahame, Noel and Noel will cater up a gastronomic gourmet of delights for your pleasure.  Profits from the event will go towards finalising the clubs financial commitment to Pentecost. This is a partners and guests evening.  Candice Lee of Burleigh Rotoract is out guest, she will advise on what Rotoract is and does.  Many of their members have been volunteering at the Surfers Sunrise shed most weekends assisting in the construction of the Pentecost building.

Tuesday’s working bee from 9am is now a bit bigger, with the yard to be raked etc.  If you can assist please let Ray and John M know. I’ll cater the morning tea so numbers would be great.  There are 9 coming along so far.

As I’ve been mentioning for some time now, our club will be participating in the Rotary Centenary baton relay on Friday 16 April.  All Rotarian are encouraged to wear a ‘Rotary Says No to Domestic Violence’ t-shirt. They are $20 each.  I send an email seeking orders in the coming days. We are volunteered to manage the BBQ at the days end, however we can take part in any event by the Cluster Clubs during the day. Once I have that schedule I’ll send out.

Until next week.

Yours in Rotary.
Les

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2021
Scribe: Robyn Brown

Meeting Report 23rd February, 2021, for Rotarlight
Sergeant for the meeting was David O’Dwyer
Neil Baldwin proposed the toast of fighting disease and then introduced the President Les Bulluss
The president welcomed a new member Maria Padilla to the Club.  Maria has lived in the Philippines and Hong Kong to name a couple and was a member at Paradise Point.
The President also commented on the sausage sizzle and the profit.  He also advised that Candice Lee will be the guest next Tuesday at the Hub meeting.
There was only one Bunyip – Nasser and that family won the prize.  Heads and Tails was won by Robyn.
The President then welcomed the guest speaker Rock O’Keefe as the Man Behind the Badge.
Rock grew up on a sheep station in central NSW where he worked at a number of positions including station-hand, carrier and fencer to name a few.
He rode a horse to the primary school and boarded initially in Parkes to attend the senior school where he excelled at the high jump. He then attended the Teachers College at Bathurst before appointed to Binnaway Central School before being drafted into the Army.
In Casino he met his wife, built a home and moved to England where they were invited to a Royal Garden Party and the Royal Enclosure of Royal Ascot.
They travelled home through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kashmir India, Nepal, Thailand and Singapore.
Back in Casino Roc taught for 23 years before resigning and moving to the Gold Coast.  Initially Roc was a primary teacher but studied and became a secondary teacher and undertook 16 years of tertiary studies at night whilst teaching.
Roc became committed to community work coaching athletics, became President of a pre-school management committee, a charter member of Casino Youth Club, Arts Council, Girl Guides and Brownies.   He was also a voluntary Director at the local and Bonalbo hospitals and was appointed as one of ten directors after the amalgamation of a number of hospitals and pathology labs of the North Coast.
When the family moved to the Gold Coast Roc started a successful handyman service, ran a bus shelter and taught on the side.  After a further course at Bond University he was offered an English teaching position three days a week and was then approached by TSS to join their staff. During this time he became a Member Elected Director of the Brisbane Anglican Diocese Superannuation Fund.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

At a boat-rental concession, the manager went to the lake's edge and yelled through his megaphone, "Number 99, come in, please. Your time is up." Several minutes passed, but the boat didn't return. "Boat number 99," he again hollered, "return to the dock immediately or I'll have to charge you overtime."
"Something is wrong here, boss," his assistant said. "We only have 75 boats. There is no number 99."
The manager thought for a moment and then raised his megaphone: "Boat number 66," he yelled. "Are you having trouble out there?"

An old lady handed her bank card to the cashier and said “I would like to withdraw $10 please”.  The cashier told her “For withdrawals less than $100, please use the ATM." The old lady wanted to know why
The cashier returned her bank card and irritably told her “These are the rules, please leave if there is no further matter. There is a line of customers behind you”.
The old lady remained silent for a few seconds and handed her card back to the teller and said “Please help me withdraw all the money I have.”
The cashier was astonished when she checked the account balance. He nodded his head, leaned over and respectfully said, “You have $300,000 in your account but the bank doesn’t have that much cash currently. Could you make an appointment and come back again tomorrow?”
The old lady then asked how much she could withdraw immediately.
The cashier told her any amount up to $3000.
“Well please let me have $3,000 now.”
The cashier kindly handed $3000 very friendly with a smile.
The old lady put $10 in her purse and asked the teller to deposit$2990 back into her account.!
The moral of this story is…. Don’t be difficult with old folk, they spent a lifetime learning  skills.

Q: Why did the germ cross the microscope?
A: To get to the other slide.

Q: What did the rope say after it got tangled?
A: Oh, no. Knot again!

Q: How do you know that your tiger is telling the truth?
A: He's not a lion.
