Hello Fellow Rotarians

On Tuesday evening we had the pleasure of welcoming Councillor Paul Taylor,thank you for visiting Paul in our new premises.

We also had the pleasure of welcoming our Guest speaker Brenton Rickard. Brenton is the Manager for Sport Services for the Commonwealth games 2018 and a former champion swimmer, having won six individual Commonwealth Games medals, three World championship Medals and two Olympic medals. Brenton gave a presentation about his life as an Olympian and the sacrifices that were required to perform at an Elite level and how now he has had to adapt to life after reaching those dizzy heights during his distinguished career. Brenton also brought along his Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for us to get up close and personal with and which was appreciated by all.

Great to see Nancy back from a long sabbatical in Canada.

Thank you to the members who have come forward to assist Pauline with the 45^th Anniversary preparations.

As mentioned at the meeting our visiting Rotarians from Sister club Taraunga have enquired about being home hosted whilst here. Please advise if you will be able to assist. It appears at this stage that we could have 8 visitors from Tauranga.

Ray Milton advised that POOTY preparations are nearly complete and has asked for members book their seats for what will be a great evening.

We have the President of Surfers Sunrise as guest speaker this coming Tuesday which promises to be another great eveing of fellowship and fun at the Broadbeach Rotary Club.

Please ensure you do read this section each week and ensure you submit it to the Rotarlight Editor (Neil Jones or Myself when Neil is away) by no later than the Friday after the meeting. This would be greatly appreciated and make the task of producing the Rotarlight much easier.

Several weeks ago I asked if there are any members who would be willing to assist in the production of the publication "Our fourth decade" which is a continuation of a record the Clubs history.

There is lot on information stored on file to enable this book to be produced and it will be an interesting an worthwhile task.

Please let me know if your are interested in assisting and I will forward you a copy of the very comprehensive information we have on file as a start

GOLD COAST POLICE OFFICER OF THE YEAR AWARDS - TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER

The thirteenth annual presentation of The Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Award will be held at the Southport Golf Club on Tuesday 17 October 2017.

Southport Rotary Club has kindly surrendered its venue to us and will be joining us for this special event on our annual Rotary calendar.

Cost on this occasion will be $55 per person. More details when finalised.

BROADBEACH 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION DINNER - SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 5 SEPTEMBER 2017

Our informal fellowship start to the evening was made more enjoyable with complimentary drinks from the Crowne Plaza to say thank you for a patronage, before Sergeant Russ opened the proceedings in his usual style and welcomed Ian Cowen for the Toast, which was to an athletic legend, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson aka 'The Lithgow Flash', and her achievements were duly recognised.

Upon his usual warm welcome, President Alain welcomed all present including honorary member Ian and a visitor, David Costello. David has recently moved from Natural Arch area to Broadbeach and we hope we will get to see David a lot more.

Alain outlined the events which was to be a focus on the 24 year history of our relationship with the Crowne Plaza and outline on the new venue, The Quality Hotel, which all will get to try next week.

After an enjoyable green chicken curry, Alain commenced with the Directors reports, which commenced with Ray Milton and an overview of the POOTY and a recap of the Police Medals ceremony last week which he and President Alain were special guests, which highlighted the positive relationship with the local police and our Club.

Pauline requested some assistance to ascertain contacts for previous members of the Club for the upcoming 45th celebration and Tony Lewis has previously emailed request to all members.

The Silver Circle finally came to be, with three draws to kick off, with winners being Peter Gowans, Robyn Browne and your truly. Outstanding payments will be sought out over the next couple of meetings.

Next, Sergeant Russ carved up those present with fines and as usual, no one missed out. Alex was successful with the raffle, Grahame Werrell with the heads and tails.

President Alain then invited Denis O'Brien to share how our Club came to be at the Crowne Plaza from the Lone Star Tavern (which is where we are returning). Denis outlined that the only reason we went to Crowne Plaza in the first place was due to a deal we couldn't refuse. But, time has come and ironically, we are returning to our previous stomping grounds. The war stories flowed from that point and shared amongst some of the longer serving members. With the Hotel staff still serving complimentary wine, the stories flowed. David O'Dwyer will further have the chance to relive the old times, being the foreman on the building of the The Quality Hotel, or Lone Star Taven as it was called back then.

Always a good night when the memories are brought out and shared, it was a great way to move forward, after a group photo to mark the occasion.

WEEKLY LAUGHS

A lady walks into a bar and sees a really cute guy sitting at the counter. She goes over and asks him what he is drinking. "Magic Beer", he says. She thinks he's a little crazy, so she walks around the bar, but after noticing that there is no one else worth talking to, she goes back to the man sitting at the bar and says, “That isn't really Magic Beer, is it?" "Yes, I'll show you."
He takes a drink of the beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
The lady can't believe it: "I bet you can't-do that again."
"Oh yea?" He smirks.
He takes another drink of beer, jumps out the window, flies around the building three times, and comes back through the window.
She is amazed and immediately asks for a magic beer of her own.
The guy says to the bartender, "Give her one of what I'm having."
She gets her drink, takes a gulp of the beer, jumps out the window... and immediately plummets 30 stories down.
The bartender looks at the guy and says, "You know something, Superman? You're a terrible person when you're drinking."

While trying to explain to our six-year-old daughter how much technology had changed, my husband pointed to our brand-new personal computer and told her that when he was in college, a computer with the same amount of power would have been the size of a house.
Wide-eyed, our daughter asked, "How big was the mouse?"

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.
Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. "Dear," said the mother diplomatically, "he doesn't seem very nice."
"Oh please, Mom," replied the daughter, "if he wasn't nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?"

A police recruit was asked during the exam, 'What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?'
