Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

Last weeks meeting saw Ray Krebs and Tristan Coombes from NBN Co present.  I thought the NBN was generally done and dusted once rolled out, however the information both relayed was educational, informative and downright interesting.  We have technologies available now ranging from loos worth $7000 equiped with landing lights to smart devices and futuristic kitchens.  I wonder what the next decade will bring! COVID aside, we live in exciting times.
Lovely to see Maria Padila along last week.  Maria is a former Paradise Point member,  prior to moving overseas and is working with Yong on her membership application.  Maria has volunteered for this Sundays sizzle at Bunnings. Thanks to all who are assisting on the day.  There is a 40% chance of rain at this stage, hopefully all after 3pm.
The trial of a meal worth $26 at our last meeting didn’t really see the rise in quality that we were hoping for.  The board have decided to retain the $25 per meeting status quo. With the 21-22 board already looking at venue options, there is no sense in altering things up only to have them change again.  Thank you again to all who responded.
From 10am on Australia Day, a reminder that Gold Coast Rotary are hosting the launch the Botanic Gardens Explorer App.  Including a free sausage sizzle, lamingtons and the chance to win some great gift packs from the Friends of Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens gift shop.  Supported by the Australia Day Council, this will also be the launch of 100 year of Rotary in Australia.  To comply with COVID regulations bookings are required for this free event. www.trybooking.com/BNNVY
On February 2nd, we are at the Hub for a mixed night.  Our guest is former Councillor, Dawn Crichlow OAM, who’s support saw the Hubs administrative journey through the GCCC sail smoother than may have otherwise been the case. EFTPOS is not available that evening.
Many thanks to Harold for investigating insurance options for the club to hold a carboot sale at Benowa Gardens.  Basically, the insurance options were not viable and the board have decided not to pursue this.
Cluster 7 Presidents meetings will recommence shortly.  We have some ideas on the table for the Rotary 100 years in Australia baton relay coming to 9640.  The consensus is that a joint event between clubs, in March or April would work best, rather than individual commemorations.  I’ll advise once the cluster presidents have met.

Yours in Rotary

Les

FROM OUR LAST MEETING TUESDAY 19 JANUARY 2021
Scribe: Ray Milton

Sergeant Bill welcomed President Les to the Rostrum

President Les welcomed everyone to the meeting including our guest speakers Ray Krebs and Tristan Coombes from NBN and Maria Padilla

Les thanked Robyn for arranging an outstanding Christmas Party and mentioned the forthcoming 100 years of Rotary celebration and our Cluster Presidents meeting

He advised the sausage sizzle roster for the 30 January was full but one person was still required for each shift for the 20 February sizzle

He thanked those members who have put themselves forward

He then called on Grahame Werrell to propose the toast

Graham proposed a toast to all heath workers involved in dealing with the Corona virus

Fellowship was enjoyed by those present during dinner

A lively Sergeant’s session was conducted by Bill who was ably assisted by bunyips Nayer and Yong

Raffle winner: Alain

Heads and Tails winner: Rock

Guest Speakers:

Ray Krebs and Tristan Coombes form NBN were introduced by Jim Hawkins

The main points of their presentation included:

NBN is a Government Business Enterprise

Threats to cut off your Internet were a scam

By 2030 via the internet it is anticipated there will be 30 smart devices per household in Australia

We have smart phones connecting TV's, Streaming, smart light bulbs and power points, refrigerators, Camera's for security, Google home for pet trackers and even able to warm your toilet seat

Calls to you saying they are from NBN are usually a scam. Let them go to your message bank

Do not let anyone you do not know to have access to your computer

Romance and dating scams are quite prevalent

Keep your personal information private

Power outages are common; always carry mobile phone backup

A simple speed test is available through google to refresh your signal

Always ensure devices are NBN compatible

Reset your modem occasionally with a simple line test

NBN advice sessions are available

A number of questions from the floor were covered

Jim thanked Ray and Tristan for their informative presentation, presented them both with our Broadbeach Rotary glass and asked members to show their appreciation by acclamation

President Les once again thanked those present for their attendance and reminded everyone there was no meeting next week being Australia Day.

He then closed the meeting

WEEKLY LAUGHS

Manager: "For a man with no experience, you are certainly asking for a high salary."
Applicant: "Well, the work is much harder when you don't know what you're doing!"
-----------------------------------------------

My sister, went to the department store to check out the bridal registry of our niece whose wedding was coming up soon. When my sister returned from the store, she tossed the gift list on a table and declared, "I think she's too young to get married."
"Why do you say that?" I asked.
"Because," she said, "they've registered for Nintendo games."

Two keys hang in an undertaker's office - one for the organ in the chapel; the other for one of the cars in the garage.
Two small signs above the keys read "Hymn" and "Hearse."

Q: What is an innuendo?
A: An Italian suppository!

Q: Where does Superman shop?
A: The Supermarket!

Q: What did the elephant say to the naked man?
A: It's cute... but can it pick up peanuts?

Q: Why don't cannibals eat clowns?
A: Because they taste funny.
