DUXBURY ROTARY CLUB
Wednesday, November 29, 2017 for the meeting of Dec. 6

District Governor Steve Certa accompanied by Assistant District Governor Jeff Lally, paid his yearly visit to Duxbury.  President Fred shared the goals of Duxbury Rotary including having nineteen active members with two honorary members.  He covered our eight Service projects including food cards, the Zabuli School, tree lighting, Veteran’s Build cooperating with the Lions Club and the American Legion, subsidizing rides for seniors, gifts for homeless children, New Years dinner for seniors, sponsoring a table for Black Tie Bingo - funds going to fuel assistance, High School scholarships, Duck Race and Placemat ads.   Our latest drive is to help Puerto Rico after the devastating hurricane.  Fred mentioned the gift he sent of a water purifier.  Social activities include the lobster dinner, bowling and a walk in the woods.  D.G. Steve and Fred discussed Rotary grants in relation to funds going to Razia’s schools with Microsoft’s Bill Gates Foundation giving $2.00 for every $1.00 we would give.

Steve spoke about his background growing up in the Bronx, becoming a teacher in Scituate then going full time as a builder repairing homes.  When he retired he took on Rotary full time and accepted the position as District Governor.

The theme of the President of Rotary International Ian H. S. Risely is “Rotary Making A Difference”.  The logo represents diversity of Rotary membership in age, race, religion, profession and gender in the different colors used.  Risely asks members to identify their passion for Rotary and what makes their drive to stay in membership.  Risley is a environmentalist and believes in sustainability and suggests that clubs plant trees either in their own town or in areas that really needs trees as in Africa.

PolioPlus and its eradication is the principal goal of Rotary.  Only 12 cases remain in 2017.  Large funds are still needed to pay for the many people on the ground in dangerous areas supplying inoculations and keeping track of the disease.

Steve thanked the club for the gifts to the Foundation by the new team of five members and also asked for contributions from all members to the Annual Fund.  He also mentioned that he thought that our club, though quit small, is doing well.

Rotary District dates:
Feb. 10; President elect seminar for Cheryl at White’s in Westport.

Fred thanked club members for attending the Foundation Dinner featuring Razia and for helping with the Holiday Tree Lighting.  Razia again made a fine presentation at her Nov. 18 gathering at the Senior Center about her girl’s school.

It is never too late to rectify an oversight.  George and his wife were also present in the group of ten Duxbury Rotarians and wives to hear Razia speak at the District Foundation dinner in Swansea.

Fred is interested in Razia’s students following their graduation and helping them start businesses.  He spoke to Sarah Parker, the Development Director of Razia’s Ray of Hope and has in mind some people connected with business schools that could help.

Placemat ads need a final drive to raise the current $2,500.00 to the goal of $3,000.00.

Please contact Fred with your “menu choice” (secret words) for the Holiday Dinner at the Alden Park restaurant.

Bob H. collected fines for the birthdays of Bob J. and George.  Bob J. and Fred bought new cars.  Steve and his wife had a great Thanksgiving with his sister.  Paul won $8.00 in the raffle.
