District 7950 Governor Valerie Perry paid her yearly visit to Duxbury Rotary.  She is from the East Providence Club.  Assistant District Governor Lisa Braun accompanied her and she is from the Plymouth Sunrise Club.  Valerie introduced herself.  She has just celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary, has three children, worked in her local school, been the City Clerk in East Providence, on the City Council and when she retired joined Rotary.  The most “Rotary Moment” (secret) she had, convincing her that Rotary was for her, was hearing Rotary exchange students discuss their positive experiences in another country.  This gave her hope that with this communication with other countries, this could result in no more wars.  Valerie stepped up in Rotary as the Rotary District Secretary, President Elect and then District Governor.  The new theme of Rotary International is Light Up Rotary.  Valerie likened it to the saying; It is better to light up a single candle that curse the darkness.  Do something to make the world a better place.  It is important to publicize the good that Rotary provides to the community.  Some Rotary events of note; Sept. 20 is a Day of Success, building membership, held at White’s Restaurant in Westport MA.  On Nov. 7 will be a Rotary Providence Bruins Game.  Nov. 13 is the Paul Harris Night at the Venus DiMilo Restaurant and April 23-26 is the District Conference in Mystic CT.  The Conference will be co-hosted with the New Jersey District.

President Fred explained the new Good Neighbor Program to our guests.  It is designed to help Duxbury people in need and to keep the donees totally anonymous.  Pat Daley from the Community Action Council will select the most needy and will handle the funds.

The Casino Night will be held at the DuxPlex facility on November 15.  See the Action Items on the back of the Aug. 26 agenda.

George read a thank you letter from Sabrina Linskey who was the Ted Leonard Scholarship winner.  After a year studying abroad, she is going to Bucknell to learn to be a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine.

Paul and Fred met with Eileen to discuss how Duxbury Rotary can help veterans, especially the disabled, with housing and finding jobs.  Eileen’s profession is valuable because it deals with life care planning.
