DUXBURY ROTARY CLUB

President Steve reviewed the Duck Race and asked for ideas to improve it next year.  The race will be moved to June 24 with hopes it will build attendance.  Very few kids attended.  The Town will require a $30.00 “permit” (secret word) to run the event.  The four-week ticket-selling period was successful.

The Studio won the Mega Duck race.  Caroline Burgess won first prize, John L’Ecuyer won second and Deloris Deluise won third.

Fred reported that the race grossed $5,634.00 and after expenses netted $4,710.00.

Bruce R. will be writing an article about the race for the Clipper.

Bruce R. presented suggestions to improve meetings.  They include opening meetings “to the public/for the public” with topics concerning the town such as  sustainable energy, affordable housing, open space, heads of town departments, and representatives of local business and non-profits.   Bruce had handouts to share his ideas with the members.

Fred handed around a sign up sheet for an event to help raise funds for veterans.

George conveyed to me a newsletter from the Scituate Club covering their August 17 meeting.  Razia visited and gave an update about her school and college.  There are now 500 students.  A Rotary Global Grant has contributed $52,000.00 to the school and the Scituate club is sponsoring students at the college.  It costs $2,800.00 per year to sponsor a student.

SCHEDULE: Aug. 31, Lobster Dinner, 5:30 PM, at the Lobster Pound in Marshfield.  A sheet was passed around to get a count of lobster rolls or lobsters.

Sept. 14, Board meeting at President Steve’s home, 5:30 PM to consider speakers and the annual budget.

Oct. 15, the next Trivia Night.  Bruce S. has volunteered to do the graphics for the event.

Nov. 4, a showing of Razia’s “What Tomorrow Brings” film.  It is a fundraiser to be held at the Duxbury Performing Arts Center from 7:00-10:00 PM.  The cost to attend is $25.00.  Duxbury Rotary’s roll will be to publicize the event.

FINES/RAFFLE: Bob H. collected funds for birthdays; Michelle’s husband Jack and Steve’s wife Lynda. Cheryl’s niece just had a baby.  Bruce R. had an uncomfortable number of failures in house hold equipment.  Bruce did win $8.00 in the raffle to soften the blow, sort of.
