Past President Cheryl ran the meeting for vacationing President Fred.

Deb Walters, a Past District Governor, spoke about her kayak trip from Maine to Guatemala, a trip that will take a year and a half.  She is a member of the charity Safe Passage that is raising funds to educate kids at a community of 7,000 to 10,000 people that are living and subsisting on items salvaged, and then resold, from the city dump.  Deb was wearing a necklace made from paper from the dump.  Most of the people are Mayan. Safe Passage has taught 600 kids to read in grades one and two and they hope to add, in the future, grades three and four.  There is an effort not to force American standards or ways on the kids so most of the teachers are Guatemalan.  The Safe Passage educational program for schools is so successful that the government of Guatemala, and other countries, are designing their education programs on this model.  Steve, with a few others, met her at Brant Rock following her visit to the Rotary Clubs of Weymouth, Quincy and Scituate, some of the 18 clubs she has spoken to so far.  The trip is sponsored by almost 50 businesses.  The wood kayak that she is using for her trip was made by her 16 years ago and was since improved by a professional boat builder.  It carries 175 pounds of cargo.  From here she goes to Plymouth on Thursday.

Plymouth Rotary is sponsoring a golf tournament on September 15 at 1:00 PM.  The contact is Patty Ryan of the Plymouth Club.

Plymouth Rotary has invited our club to attend a talk by Razia on August 28 as a fundraiser for her girl’s school.

Michelle Conway has been organizing the “Casino Night” (secret) and she has listed the job responsibilities required in her recent email.

Michelle Conway will be having an open house for her daughter, who will be traveling to Indonesia for a yearlong trip, at her home, 62 Bianca Road, on Sunday, August 17 from 4 – 7:00 PM.

SCHEDULE: Aug. 19, a morning meeting.

FINES/RAFFLE: Eileen’s son is engaged.  Michelle Shea will soon have another grandchild.  With only eight cards left, Michelle Shea won $4.00.
