DUXBURY ROTARY CLUB
BRIDGE April 20, 2016 for the meeting of April 27

Razia updated the club on the girl’s school, which is doing well.  There are now 559 girls from kindergarten threw grade twelve.  Two disabled students have joined and, with the help from therapists, have considerably improved their mobility.  The disabled have been traditionally shunned.  Sponsorship of the girl’s education now cover 350 students.

Patti Quigley, the Executive Director of Razia’s Ray of Hope, ran the Boston Marathon taking six hours from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM to finish the race.  She not only finished the race with no ill effects but also was smiling at the end.  She raised over $50,000.00 for the school.

Razia has been running her own marathon all across the US speaking to Rotary District Conferences about her efforts to improve the lives of girls in Afghanistan.  She recently spoke to our District conference in Brewster MA.  She suggests that attendance at conferences and Rotary gatherings is vital to spread the word about our club’s worthy efforts.  She has been given the prestigious Rotary “Service Above Self “ award for her work for the girl’s school.

Trivia Night details were discussed.  Cheryl will contact the American Legion to work on plans for the event.  Next weeks meeting, April 27 will be held at the Legion Hall.  Keep in mind that this is a Rotary project run in cooperation with the Legion and Habitat For Humanity.  We need to stress this fact in publicity for posters and newspaper articles.  Also that the funds will be going to veteran housing.  Jim Middleton will be putting together slides of Habitat housing projects, which will be shown during the evening.  The suggestion was made to have a 50/50 raffle selling tickets, one for $10.00 or three for $20.00.  Trivia Night will be held May 21 at the American Legion.  Doors open at 7:00 PM and the function starts at 7:30 PM.

$1,200 has been raised so far by the placemat ads.  Follow up with the donors.

An educator from Uganda stopped by to thank Rotary for assistance to him in building up a school with seven students to 350 in six years.  He was accompanied by Mr. Hall, who with former Rotary member Chris Blake, have been involved with the school since its beginning.

SCHEDULE: “April 27, the meeting will be held at the American Legion Hall” (secret) at 6:30 PM with an agenda to make plans for Trivia Night.

FINES/RAFFLE: Fred collected the fines.  Bob Johnson won two raffles in a row, the raffle for last week, $6.00 and for this week, $10.00.
