August is Membership and New Club Development Month                         26 August 2020

Service shifts our attention
             from ourselves
    to other people.

Vivek Murthy  US Surgeon general 2014 - 2017
President Colin is unwell, and therefore unable to write an address to the membership this week.

Instead, I have explored the RI website to bring you Vivek Murthy from The Rotarian Conversation.

Vivek was the 19th U.S. surgeon general 2014 - 2017. He has partnered with Rotary clubs and other service organisations in India to set up community events for an HIV/AIDS education program that he co-founded with his sister, Rashmi.

Loneliness is the subject of  his new book

Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World.

He discusses loneliness and how it erodes self esteem and how service reaffirms that we do have something to offer the world.
This discussion feels particularly relevant in these times of physical isolation.

I promise you it is a really inspiring read.

OUR  RADIO PLAY
Fibber Gets His Hand Caught in a Bottle
from Wayne

Hi All,
Here  is the link I spoke about in the meeting tonight

I have read through the script and selected it because it is lighthearted and I think it will be a fun exercise.
Would all those who volunteered have a look at the script and let me know which part you would like to do. ....first in ..best dressed

I have sufficient volunteers to cover the "cast".
Thank you for your interest

MERCY SHIPS
Last week, Tammy Shepherd told us about the extraordinary work carried out by Mercy Ships. Tammy- a physiotherapist- had worked 3 months in 2019 in West Africa on the AFRICA MERCY.
Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to deliver free, world-class health care services, capacity building and sustainable development aid to those without access in the developing world.
All volunteers are completely self funded, paying their own air fare and travel expenses, as well as a monthly fee of US$700 for meals and accommodation in a multi berth cabin.

MIMS NEWS

This article from the Fiji Sun

Fijian Doctors To Perform Stent Procedures  for The First Time Without Assistance

Read the article at   CATH LAB

This is welcome news. This would not have become possible without the Rotary MIMS project which donated and installed the Cath lab at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.

This lab was installed by Rotary in April 2014, when Peter Koens ( R .Nunawading ) led an installation team  of self -funded volunteers to Suva. Included in the team were  fellow Rotarian Joe Vanaria, Rotaractor David Barry, Celeste Koens and Owen Street. Peter continues to assist with maintenance over the years.

The lab was, when installed, the only Cath Lab in the Pacific basin, and continues to serve patients not just from Fiji, but also from neighbouring islands to even as far away as Tuvalu.

Since the Labs are at least 10 years old at the time of installation, plans are in place for providing a replacement lab within  5-7 years from installation, depending on the availability of suitable machines.A replacement for this lab is in storage, and awaits shipping and installation once all COVID-19 restrictions on travel have been lifted.
