Presidential Ponderings

This weekend saw the very first Multi-District Conference in Australia take place in the heart of Melbourne. 4 districts came together, in what can only be described as a terrific success and a credit to all those who were inspired to envision a different type of Rotary Conference. 1600 Rotarians and friends of Rotary attended across 3 days, including 20 Rotarians and partners from Nunawading.
The 7 of us in this photo had the genuine privilege to meet Ass Professor Tillman Ruff AM, after he spoke at the Peace Building Conference on Friday. Professor Tillman is an extraordinary Australian, founding the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (iCAN), for which he was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

His calm and thoughtful presentation of some truly shocking statistics was one of the highlights for everybody in the room on Friday. As an example, if 1 nuclear weapon from the current stockpiles around the world had been detonated every 2 weeks since 1945, after the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there would still be a stockpile of weapons. A truly monstrous situation.
This is the world in which Rotary can and is making a difference, and can be the inspiration for peace and respect through all of our projects and interactions across the globe.
The weekend was inspirational in every sense, and I will share some more highlights over the next couple of weeks. It was a genuine pleasure and privilege to be a part of the conference this year - RI President Barry Rassin  should be very proud of his 4 District Governors from Districts 9800, 9810, 9820 and 9790 for their vision and living the challenge "to be the inspiration". Now it's our turn to take up that challenge, and not forget anything that we saw and learned about our awesome organisation.

Yours in Rotary,

Kind Regards,

President Janette

Last week's Speaker
Last week the club had the pleasure of having Mike Finke give us a presentation on the history of Hansard and his career as a Hansard reporter in the Victorian Parliament.
A great presentation on the changing nature of Parliamentary reporting over the years and why verbatim is unattainable.

International Women's Day Event - 2019
Let's Celebrate International Women's Day!

International Women's Day Breakfast in Box Hill

Join us at the premier event celebrating International Women's Day in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

The theme is "Women of Diversity - Success Against the Odds" and our expert speakers and MC will ensure that we are challenged, charmed and entertained!  It will be a fun event with a delicious breakfast, lots of friendly banter and the ever-popular raffle.

Our event last year was a great success - so don't miss out - bring a friend or book a table and CELEBRATE!  Men are welcome, of course.

Importantly, it's all for a good cause - this year, with your help, we are aiming to raise $10,000 for
Dream Stitches, a local charity that assists migrant and refugee women.

Event details are:
Date: Wednesday, 6th March 2019.  Breakfast starts at 7:15am - please arrive by 7am.
Venue: Box Hill Town Hall, 1022 Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill.
Easy public transport and plenty of parking nearby.

Ticket Pricing:
Adult tickets are $65 - but only $55 with an early bird booking - ends on Tuesday 12th Feb
Corporate tables are available, as well as concessional VCE/Uni student tickets.
