OUR SPEAKER LAST WEEK

DISTRICT GOVERNOR ALMA REYNOLDS

President Colin welcomed our District Governor Alma Reynolds and her husband Rotarian Greg King.
More about Alma at

Alma began her presentation with a quote from Holger Knaack when, as President Elect of RI, he announced his Presidential Theme for 2020 -2021.

“Rotary is not just a club you join, but an invitation to endless opportunity.”

She went on to describe her role and the role of District to be one of facilitator: enabling clubs to “be the best they could be”
She especially thanked the following members for their services to District: Judith Eadon (Dist. Secretary), Harvey Lane, Mike Finke (AG) and Geoff Logie- Smith (not a member of Nunawading, but AG for Whitehorse B Cluster). She also thanked Janette Etherington for her work with Interplast.

Covid-19 and a global recession is changing the world as we know it, and we will inevitably see a great deal of need in our own communities. We Rotarians will need to adapt ourselves to the new normal, and find ways in which we can best serve the needs of our community.
If we had no plans or ideas of our own, Alma suggested that we look for project inspiration in our District 9810 newsletter ‘Open Doors’ – both current and archived volumes- for inspiration. She also advised that the RI website would also provide a large variety of potential projects.
She suggested that RC Nunawading had  a ‘nest egg for a rainy day, we should recognise that
” It’s raining right now!”
The advice she gave in a nutshell:
  • Make a plan or adapt your plan to address the new circumstances your community faces, and ensure you include something special to celebrate 100 years of rotary in Australia.
  • Focus on Your community needs you right now.
  • Every project a rotary project with your label on it.
  • Make your club as much fun and meaningful as it can be.
  • Engage beyond your own club.
  • Continue to support Rotary Flagships.
Her husband Greg spoke about End Polio Now, and asked members to donate generously so that Rotary could complete the task it had taken on 35 years ago. He asked that each member contribute US$25 or more to END POLIO NOW.
