September is Basic Education and Literacy Month for Rotary.
This is one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus. We all know how critical reading and writing are for success in life – for gaining information, communicating, making agreements, and so forth.
Enhancing Basic Education skills and Literacy are essential in reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace. Improvements can reduce maternal death, improve childhood survivability, and reduce poverty. They can also enable success in business or a profession.
Projects undertaken by a Rotary Club can address low adult literacy, returning youth to school, enhancing student performance, or supplementing limited school resources.
Consider how your club is, or could showcase "THE MAGIC OF ROTARY by supporting basic education and literacy in your community or somewhere else in the world.
Our meetings are hybrid, with both online and in person attendance options.
6.30PM FOR 7PM START. Please contact our attendance chair on attendance@rotaryboronia.org.au to make a booking.

Well, the word “busy’ doesn’t really cover what our Club did this week!
First, we had the celebration of the Boronia Station upgrade where we cooked and sold sausages and drinks. We had many volunteers from our Club and I’m sure Helene will give us the good news on how much we raised for the 3 hrs we were there.
Then, at Westfield Knox Shopping Centre (home of the Westfield Local Hero! who is still on the big display boards until Monday….) we had a stall to participate in the Westfield Community Day. Many people passed by however, there were a few who stopped and wanted more info about Rotary. Hopefully we will get some more members from the conversations had by our members spruiking how good the Rotary Club of Boronia is!
We couldn’t attend these events without the fantastic support of our members, and on the weekend, there were many. Thank you to all of those that were able to make it to either or both of the events and special thanks to Helene and Paul for their work organizing each location and the rosters.
On Monday I’m attending the announcement of the new Local Hero for Westfield Knox. The finalists are all worthy recipients of this award so good luck to all of them. So, after Monday you can no longer see ‘yours truly’ on the big display boards at Knox City. All jokes aside, it has been an honour and a privilege to represent our Club for a whole year, constantly displaying our Rotary Club and Rotary in general. The $20,000 we received for the award has been used appropriately to build another Skills Shed at Boronia K-12 and is going great guns. I believe that every opportunity we can get to show off our Club and Rotary in general, we should do it.
This week we had some great news about the Blue Tree project. Paul will fill us in on Tuesday.
Our RAK (Randon Act of Kindness) this week was presented by Roland our chairperson for the week. At a moment’s notice, he told us about a guy who had a fall near his home and Roland was able to assist him to get back to his home along with the shopping he had. A terrific Act of Kindness Roland, thank you!
I’m looking forward to hearing our 4 guest speakers this week from RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) and RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment).
Don’t forget on Tuesday night, at our meeting we will be wearing red to support World Polio Day. Thanks to Jan and her Social Committee for the idea.
Wow what a week it’s been in Rotary!
See ya Round!
A little reminder from the Bread Roll Department…
Each Monday afternoon, we give the Knox Club our final meal numbers, and that is exactly how many bread rolls they order.
So, if you have advised that you’re not having a meal, sadly there won’t be a bread roll with your name on it!
And if we don’t know you’re coming for a meal, we can’t guarantee there’ll be a roll waiting for you either.
Please make sure your meal arrangements are confirmed by Monday afternoon.
We are doing our best to make our meetings run smoothly. Thanks for your co-operation.
Moral of the story: if you want the roll, book the meal! 🍞😄

On Friday Kristy Foster ( acting Principal) gave the students at Boronia Heights Primary Schoolan update on the Rotary Boronia Youth Skills Shed and the delivery of their donated desks and chairs to Papua New Guinea. The desks and chairs have gone to Ferguson Island in the Milne Bay Area of PNG courtesy of Rotary Boronia. Of particular interest to the children was the existing lack of desks and chairs at the Ferguson Island school with the children having to work on the floor.
The 20 foot sea container had been unloaded and items dispatched to their new homes - some items might take awhile to get there as transport and weather are very patchy at present. The Rotary Club of Boronia has gifted the container to the Alotau Netball Association to use as secure storage at their games venue. The need to cart heavy items such as tables, tents and chairs is now taken over by the container. We are so happy to support the Netball activities in Milne Bay and surrounds.

Last week’s meeting was a presentation by Kelly Ann Maughan and Robyn Van Leeuwen on the Adult Migrant English Program.
They both gave a very comprehensive overview of the program and how much joy they have achieved working as volunteers teaching new migrants English.
