Bernie's Brief

Hi all,
It was lovely last week to hear everyone’s plans, past, present, and future. It’s amazing to reflect on all that we’ve done to date and to hear about the exciting things still to come.

It was also a great week for Back Pack 4 Kids to join us. Sarah has already sent a thank-you email, not only for the donation but also for the great work we are doing.

In addition, I’ve received an invitation from Boronia K-12 School to attend their ANZAC service, as a tribute to the amazing things we have done, and continue to do, for the school. I do recall Heather and I many years ago trying to get something from the school without success.  It has finally paid off.

I look forward to catching up with everyone this Wednesday at the bowls evening.

Yours in Rotary

Backpacks 4 VIC Kids$2,500 Donation from Our 2025 Golf Day

At our last meeting, we were delighted to present Backpacks 4 VIC Kids with a donation of $2,500—a share of the profits from our 2025 Annual Golf Day. It was a proud moment for our Club, knowing these funds will go directly towards supporting Victorian children and young people who are doing it tough.

Backpacks 4 VIC Kids is a Victorian charity (founded in 2014) that provides essential material aid to displaced babies, children and youth—often at times when they are forced to relocate with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Their programs include carefully prepared packs such as My Essentials, School Essentials, Youth Outreach, Christmas packs and Disaster Relief packs, developed in consultation with support services to bring comfort, ease anxiety, and help restore dignity. (Backpacks 4 Vic Kids)

The impact is remarkable. Since 2014, Backpacks 4 VIC Kids reports delivering 60,391 crisis packs and $12.6M in material aid across multiple states and territories. In the 2024/25 financial year, they report distributing $3,007,176 in material aid to 12,449 babies, children and young people. (Backpacks 4 Vic Kids)

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported our 2025 Golf Day—your participation helped turn a great day out into a very real difference for local kids in crisis. If you’d like to learn more about Backpacks 4 VIC Kids (or explore ways to donate, volunteer, or sponsor a pack), visit their website. (Backpacks 4 Vic Kids)

KNOX ROCKS - 3MDR

On Friday 23 January, Mark and Katie took Knox Rocks to the radio, broadcasting live on 3MDR 97.1 Community Radio to talk about the Knox Rocks Youth Songwriting Program. It was a fantastic segment and a wonderful opportunity to showcase what this program is all about—young people finding their voice through music and turning real life into powerful songwriting.

The broadcast was a great success, and the radio host was genuinely surprised by the originality, quality, and depth of personal experience reflected in the songs. Many of the tracks were aired, giving listeners a real taste of the incredible talent and honesty coming through the program.

One of the most moving moments was hearing Katie, a participant from the most recent round of Knox Rocks, speak openly about her experience living with an eating disorder and how songwriting helped her express what she was going through. Katie shared how the Knox Rocks program supported her to put feelings into words and music—and how it has helped her grow in confidence. It’s exactly the kind of positive outcome that Mark is so proud of, and a great reminder of the lasting impact this program can have on a young person’s life.

If you didn’t get a chance to listen live, you can catch the replay here:

ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF DAY

Our Annual Charity Golf Day is almost here, and the excitement is building!

To help make the day even more enjoyable, we’re currently seeking donations of prizes for our Lucky Number Draw, which will be held during lunch once everyone has finished their round. Items such as wine or beer, books, puzzles, glassware, giftware, chocolates, or any other suitable prizes would be very gratefully received. Every donation—big or small—helps add to the fun and boosts our fundraising efforts.

And of course, we’d love to see plenty of golfers out on the course! If you’re interested in playing, or you know someone who’d enjoy a great day of golf for great causes, please add your name to the list and feel free to share the details with friends, family, or colleagues. Let’s make this year’s Charity Golf Day another fantastic success!

FRIDAY ACTIVITIES - CONFERENCE

For those of you attending Conference (and partners too!), why not make the most of being in Hobart and jump into some fun Friday activities on Friday 13 March, before the official proceedings begin on Saturday?

If you’re up for a hit of golf, join us at Claremont Golf Course – a stunning course along the Derwent River, just a short distance from Hobart. A bus will collect you and return you to the Hotel Grand Chancellor, making it super easy. Clubs and golf carts are available for hire, and can be booked directly through the Claremont Golf Club. The event will be played as an Ambrose, so don’t worry if you’re not a regular golfer – it’s designed to be relaxed, social and lots of fun. Lunch is included before heading back to the hotel.

Prefer something a little more laid-back but still sporty? A friendly game of bowls at Sandy Bay Bowls Club (a short drive from Hobart) is another great option, with lunch included. It’s a brilliant way to mix with Rotarians from other clubs and enjoy a few laughs along the way.

Not feeling sporty at all? No problem! Treat yourself to a Morning Tea experience at The Henry Jones, starting with a fascinating storytelling session about the Hobart waterfront—its history, characters, and convict tales. After that, you’ll head into the magnificent MACq 01 building for a delicious morning tea filled with history and scrumptious food.

There are also some wonderful tasting experiences on offer. Join the luncheon at the Waterline Restaurant with an optional gin tasting, where McHenry Distillery will share a short talk on gin-making, followed by tastings (with purchases available). And for whiskey lovers, Lark Distillery is just up the street from the Hotel Grand Chancellor, offering an afternoon whiskey tasting experience.

Then, to round out the day, come along to the Pre-Dinner Drinks at the Henry Jones Atrium with the DGs—a fantastic chance to meet new people, reconnect with old friends, and really get into the spirit of Conference before the weekend begins.

All of these venues for morning tea, lunch, whiskey tasting and pre-dinner drinks are a short walking distance from the Hotel Grand Chancellor, so no need to organise any transport.

All of these activities can be booked via the Conference website, and many are open even if you’re not attending the full Conference. I’d love to see plenty of our club there—have a chat with others who are heading over and maybe plan to attend an activity together. What a perfect way to start an unforgettable weekend in Hobart!

Conference session times

  • Saturday plenary sessions: 10:00am – 5:00pm
Held in the Federation Concert Hall, Hotel Grand Chancellor

  • Sunday sessions: recommence 8:30am                                                                                 Held in the Federation Concert Hall, Hotel Grand Chancellor

  • Conference concludes at 1:40pm

GALA DINNER

The Gala Dinner on Saturday night is one of the real highlights of the Conference weekend — a relaxed, fun-filled night designed for laughter, social networking, dancing and plenty of good memories.

What to expect at the Gala Dinner

The Gala Night is all about fun and camaraderie. Traditionally, clubs and attendees dress up to the theme chosen by the District Governor. This year's theme is 'Nautical'.  It’s not formal in the “stuffy” sense — it’s light-hearted and informal, with the aim of adding a bit of humour and extra energy to the weekend.

There is no official parade of clubs. Some clubs like to enter the ballroom together to make a splash (and it can be a lot of fun!), but once you’re in, you’re welcome to mingle, catch up with friends, and find your seats at your own pace.

As you arrive, the District Governors will welcome you at the door and will keep a close eye out for the “Best Dressed Club”, which will receive recognition during the night.

Run sheet for the evening

  • 6:30pm – Doors open

  • 7:00pm – Please be seated

  • 7:30pm – Entrée served (with musical entertainment by saxophonist Mark Smith)

  • 8:35pm – Main course served

  • 8:50pm (approx.) – Band Wingin’ It begins

  • 9:30pm – Dessert served

  • 11:45pm – Night concludes

The vibe

If you’ve never been to a Rotary Gala Night before, think of it as a big, friendly celebration — music, dancing, laughs, and meeting new people from across the districts. It’s the kind of night you’ll talk about afterwards, and it’s a perfect way to top off a big day of Conference sessions.

By the end of the weekend, you’ll absolutely walk away feeling like a proud Rotarian — with new friends, fond memories, and plenty of inspiration.
