For August, Rotary International asks us to Imagine Rotary by developing new members.
Being Membership Month, this is an opportunity to share key messages about the things that we can do to grow Rotary. In the first instance, we need to recognise that people have many competing commitments in life. Remember that no one is compelled to be a Rotarian: it is voluntary.
We know that we are looking for fun people who are community-minded, helpful and resourceful. As Rotarians we need to create a positive experience within our Clubs, one that is based on the Four Way Test where our actions are fair to all, build goodwill and better friendships and beneficial to all concerned. Once we acknowledge that, we can assert our reputation as being welcoming, diverse and inclusive into our communities.
Attracting members to join Rotary may well be easier than retaining them. With that in mind, we need to select our members carefully. Make sure that they are a good fit with your Club and that your Club meets their expectations. Clubs are the vehicle to being a Rotarian. For the future success of Rotary, we need to think of membership as being part of Rotary International, not an individual Club.
We need to be actively involved in creating new and innovative Club models.
The Rotary experience is far-reaching. Interact, Rotaract and Rotary are the community of our international service organisation. Rotary’s International President sends the message that “There is no wrong age to be a Rotarian”.
Our meetings are hybrid, with both online and in person attendance options.

Last Monday at the new Rotary Skills Shed at Boronia K-12 (Skills Shed No. 2.), the Junior Tradies were able to dismantle and check various items on a lawnmower! After they put them back together, they tested them by starting the engine. A terrific initiative of the Teachers and Trade instructors at the Shed.
At our Youth Skills Shed No.1 we had the first session of the Term, Woodworking. The guys from the Knox Woodworkers Club (John, Todd and Bill) showed the Junior Tradies how to assemble a toolbox and pencil case which they were able to take home. Again, we thank the guys for their ongoing support and turning up at the start of every Term.
Geoff, our newest member turned up again, so we didn’t scare him off by inducting him! I’m sure he will be a great contributor to our Club and already very involved with the Environment Committee.
Glenn, our Chairperson again for the night, had exhausted all of his Random Act of Kindness (RAK) the week before so it was over to me to tell my RAK. I allowed a person behind me in the line at the supermarket to go first as she only had one item. Then her card didn’t work and whole thing ended up being a good 5-6 minute delay while it got sorted. The RAK went a bit pear shaped for me……. But I’ll keep trying to get a good one!
We had our first Committee meetings this week. What a buzz around the room it was with many ideas, projects and plans being worked through by all of our Committees. Val left a bit early as she was the only one in her Committee to attend, so I think she had a quick discussion with herself and then left. You could sense the true Rotary spirit in the room as the members were all engaged in conversations. It is the perfect example of what our Club, Boronia, is all about. We create an idea and then deliver it with effort, passion and success. I look forward with anticipation to watch the projects and ideas evolve. Last Committee to leave was the Fundraising Committee. I sat in for a few moments and gave them a rough target of $200,000 (only kidding but wouldn’t it be great…..). Maybe that’s why they were last to leave?
Next week we will be attending the District Governor, Emma Clark’s combined meeting with Lilydale, Knox, Bayswater and us at Eastwood Golf Club. Reminder that it is on Tuesday 11th August and a 6-6.30pm start (a bit earlier start than us).
