The Sistine Madonna, is a oil painting by the Italian artist Raphael, commissioned in 1512 by Pope Julius II and probably executed c. 1513–1514. Giorgio Vasari called it "a truly rare and extraordinary work" - but today, the depiction and notably the two angels below the Madonna have been trivialised and kitsched up, printed hundreds of times on mugs, postcards and bags and alienated for advertising purposes. Professor Hubertus Günther, art historian and expert in Renaissance art, will bring a new light and understanding to this well-known painting and show us a new way of looking at this beloved image.
