From the Editor

Good afternoon to my fellow Rotarians, well winter is certainly upon us with gusto, that cold blustery wind blowing in from across the Bay straight up Main St Mornington and a lot of snow falling to very low  altitudes around the outer Melbourne Hills. I had a word to John Parkinson yesterday to see if he could pop out and shut the front door at the end of Main St !!! ❄️
Our on-line ZOOM meetings have been going very well with very good attendance and its seems like its now the new norm, thats a bit scary.  There have been a few members who thru IT / Website connectivity problems have not been able to join us , but not to worry I have made contact with them and all are doing great and are keeping in touch via phone with fellow members.  Leigh Power is heading back down to the Peninsula , next week and plans to log-in and join us. Peter Huels is going great, he's very busy on his 3 acre property with lots to do and unfortunately with his location he has continual ongoing " drop-out " problems with his Internet Coverage. I also spoke to Neil Frost who lamented at the sad state that his beloved Main St is in, as he ventures out on his daily exercise walks, but he was also very positive that we will "bounce back , it might take a while , and we will get back to normal".  I have just spoken to Ted Moore earlier this afternoon, is going along fine, apart from the cold weather. He told me that at this time of the year he is slowly heading south and should have been be in Kununarra right now, so I just checked the BOM Weather for the area, Hot & Sunny, overnight temperatures dropping to 13, with day temperatures reaching the mid 30's, not too bad, and we can see why Ted and Philippa head north for Winter.

Club Board Meeting - 19th August 2020

Last week we had a break from our usual Club Weekly Meeting, to hold our Board Meeting. Even though we may be lockdown and " not physically out there " doing things as a club, we still have a lot on the planning table and some of our projects are a bit slow at the moment and some are progressing along quite well. As a club at the moment we have : The Roof Structure over The Long Table, The Gateway Park Project, The Gippsland Bushfire Relief Revegetation Project, The Fusion Bathroom and the Bay Trail Project. All these projects were discussed at the Board Meeting.  Aside from the former mentioned projects there are also a number of '"happenings ", such as . It was very pleasing to hear from our International Chair, Richard Vautier, that our Water Hydrant payment has been confirmed and we are awaiting confirmation of its arrival to the Minjewoong Central School in Bhutan, another great success and an extremely valuable asset to improve the quality of life to a much needed community. From our Youth Chair, John Renowden, there has not been a lot of face to face ' projects " such as our Mock Interviews and Schools Show Case Evening , as you would expect, and our contribution the the Schools Scholarships will go ahead but attendance might be somewhat problematic. But on a positive note within Youth "hot off the press" , we look like we have had a favourable outcome for our NYSF applicant for the 2020/2021 Science Forum , still a bit to go as you would expect with the current COVID restrictions, but John will be able to provide more details once we get " go or no go " clarification. There were quite a few additional items of business discussed throughout the meeting, and should you wish to view the Minutes of the Board Meeting you can access this via our Website , on Members Only Tab.

Club Protection
Just a note and a friendly reminder from our Club's Protection Officer, Fran Chambers, who would like to remind all those members to please check your wallet, safe, or important documents folder, to see if your Working With Children Permit is up to-date. For those new members of the Club, who may have been inducted in the past 12 to 18 months, the Victorian Government Working With Children Permit is a a very important and mandatory requirement for many Volunteer Organisations. As a club we have at time's direct contact with the younger generation of our community, in such activities as the Mornington Secondary College - Mock Interviews etc , and for us to be involved in these type of undertakings it is a legal requirement to be registered and in date. There is no cost to apply and register as we are a volunteer organisation, and you apply on line direct via the Vic State Government Webpage as per the attached link :

Isolation Projects

With our current Lockdown, in full swing, we see the return of our Clubs " My Isolation Project". This week we have a few projects to peruse over with a range a creative items ' on display ". The First being a very innovative use of recycled items by Ken and Wendy Bilham.

What a fantastic use of some very common items to create a bright and eye catching sculptures. Well done Ken and Wendy

And further to Ken and Wendy, our own budding Artist, John Renowden has finished his painting.

It certainly appears that some of our members have a range of artistic talents and we might have to include a " Rotary Members Only Section/ Display" in next years Art Show.

Following on from our last Guest Speaker in Joe Siragusa , and his experiences of his trek along the Bilumbbum Track in WA, may have sparked some memories from some of our members and to that end I received some very impressive pics of a small section of large trek that the Horton's undertook, some years ago, in Great Britain. For those who are watchers of Sir Tony Robinson on his TV Documentaries of Great Walks in the UK , the Hortons " have been there done that " and here is a small selection of from Ian's treks of what seems to be an amazing site in the Far North of the UK.

These pics are from a site known as Skara Brae which is a stone built Neolithic settlement located on the Bay of Skaill on the West Coast of Mainland, the largest island in the Orkney archipelago of Scotland. Consisting of eight clustered houses, it was occupied from roughly 3180BC to about 2500BC , and is Europes most complete Neolithic village. Things Ian for some great pics and I'm sure it brings back great memories of your trekking around Britain.

Report from Molly King

Here’s a quote out of Molly’s first Semester Report to Australian Rotary Health, that I thought you might be interested in.

“This unusual start to second year did present with some challenges. I was very grateful to receive a scholarship to support me through this time. Not being able to have a job during this time meant that money spent on study tools such as textbooks and other resources would have been a big stretch. My mother also supporting my sister and I during this time would have found this a very difficult without this grant. I am very appreciative for what I have received. Meeting the Rotary club in Mornington over zoom was also a very special moment for me and it really has meant a lot to me that when I do return to Melbourne, I have support around me. I am very much looking forward to Semester 2”

If you know someone you would like to nominate please let me know.

Board Meeting last week

You should get the Minutes in the next few days. We will also give you an update at next week’s meeting.  There was considerable discussion regarding the importance of keeping in touch with our members during this extraordinary time, & of keeping their involvement in activities & projects. This was particularly concerning for those not actively engaged in “Zoom” technology & computer contact. Current club projects were listed & members allocated in line with their interests & committee allocations. Committee Chairpersons will be following up accordingly, and activating committee activity to assist in engaging ongoing members involvement. Our Club meeting on September 16 will give each Committee Chair the opportunity to give you an update.
