From the Editor

Good morning to my fellow Mornington Rotarians hope all is well.  With the current Lockdown Restrictions now starting to ease that will see us being able to venture out a bit more it all seems, at the present moment, a bit of a non event, and by that I mean the blast of icy weather. Yes Winter has certainly come upon us with a savage blast and with all the restrictions that the authorities have instigated over the past few months Mother Nature has stepped in and her message is one of "stay at home " !!

In regards to our Club Meetings resuming , well that may still be some many weeks away. Our President, Ross, has had a meeting with the management of the Mornington Hotel last week and the news is.  With the easing of " eating out restrictions" in Clubs , Pubs and Cafes', as promulgated by the Vic State Government, that most of us are aware that is commencing this week our meeting venue, specifically being the Stanton Room, is classed a Function Room/ Centre and therefore comes under a stricter set of rules from that of the Bistro/ Dinning Room.  Consequently this room will not be opening for some time as to be advised by the authorities most likely towards the end of June. So for the immediate future we are still conducting our Meetings via online ZOOM.

By now you should have received correspondence from our Treasurer , John P, as to the upcoming Annual Club Fee's and it was very pleasing to hear that our dues for the 2020/2021 Rotary Year will see no increase in $$$.  A welcome relief , thanks to the Boards decision not to increase our fees.

The Board Meeting

You should have all received a copy of the minutes of the Board meeting. Hopefully they are self explanatory and reinforce that the club is operating well in these changed circumstances.
We will devote one of our club meetings in June to discussing the project to find a significant new project for Mornington.
We will also have a Special General Meeting June to adopt our new Constitution and ByLaws.

Bushfire Relief
Last week I had a long conversation with  Pearl Findlay Jones who is Chair of the Bairnsdale Clubs Relief. My summary of what she said is
  • The “emergency”  is over. The immediate “human” need for food, shelter, clothing is now in the hands of “experts”, case managers from government departments, and money is coming through.
  • We are now moving into reconstruction stage and there is still a huge need for funding for
  • Fencing – basics like star pickets – they have just received a grant from the US of $35k but have an ongoing major  need
  • Feed for animals – hay , pellets etc – becoming very acute heading into winter
  • Shipping containers – they have a list of 150 “verified” people wanting containers for storage, replacing burnt sheds etc They have so far supplied about 40. Cost is about $4.5k delivered, each. They are gifted to the recipient.
  • An emerging need is for revegetation of burnt areas – trees that are vital to environment preservation, shade for stock etc I also spoke to Peter Sindrey who is organising this and is in the planning stages. Several Melbourne Rotary clubs re offering to help with labour etc but they need to buy nursery stock etc
I think we need to consider
  1. Do we want to invest the $10k we have committed now ….or continue to wait (or split it ) .
  2. Do we want to do so via the Bairnsdale Clubs?
  3. If affirmative to both of the above – do we have any preferences above ?

We will talk about this at a June meeting but I would like to hear your thoughts now.

Thanks too to Ted Moore who arranged some knitted baby beanies which have been forwarded to the District 9820 warm winter appeal, which is now closed.
