Guest Speaker - Mr Mark Anderson

Since the commencement of the current Lockdown Restrictions our Club, like many, have sorely missed the face to face personal interaction of not only the fellowship our weekly Club Meetings but also the interface of our Guest Speakers.  Last Wednesday evening at our ZOOM Club Meeting is was pleasing to return to some small part on normality with our online Guest Speaker Mr Mark Anderson who is currently the Senior Coordinator for the International Fund Development at Rotary International that is based in Parramatta NSW.

From the outset is was very evident that Mark’s presentation in regards to the delivery method, not allowing for an online viewing, was going to be very, very vibrant.

Mark commenced his presentation with a few very interesting facts, one of which was amazing in that within our country there are some 65,000 Registered Charities that amass a staggering $10.5 Billion annually.

The focus of Mark’s presentation was to highlight the importance of Foundation within Rotary from the hundreds of International Projects right down to the Foundation Projects that each club, within their own community zones can in their own small way deliver to those in need.

The Priority and main focus of Rotary International is to:  End Polio, Undertake projects that are Sustainable, Utilise District Designated Funds and The Rotary Endowment via the world fund and the Annual Fund.

One fact that Mark conveyed to us, which many would consider alarming especially in view of Rotaries No 1 World Wide Project, was that there are, (not many) but still a number of Rotary Clubs throughout Australia that do not contribute to the End Polio Project. ??

The success of Rotary International was highlighted with one amazing example of a major project in India that saw in one year the immunization of some 180 Million children receiving the oral Polio Vaccine, this is truly an amazing demonstration of the power of co-operation and collaboration between Governments and Rotary at a Global Scale that is a beggar’s belief, and shows the immense power of Volunteer Organisation’s.

One fact that was imparted was the ability for your “ funds to grow “ and most of us are aware of the monetary gains that can be produced and delivered from one Rotary Club via applications to District, along with the contributions from private organisation’s and companies all the way thru to Rotary International, which at times can result in a triple fold gain the each dollar, along the way.

In all, we as a Volunteer Organisation have the ability to “change the lives of people around the world”. Rotary stands at the forefront of contribution and assistance to a myriad of projects that are all focused on serving and just as important providing the “ hands on the ground” in countries all over the world.

The overriding message that Mark was adamant about was to ensure that however big or small your Club Project might be was to ensure that  “ it is sustainable”

The Rotary Club of Mornington would like to extend a big thanks to Mark for providing his time and his very energetic presentation.

President's Update
President’s Report

I have had several members contact me to say how good last week’s Zoom meeting and guest speaker, Mark Anderson from Rotary Foundation in Sydney, were. I have followed up for a copy of the presentation and as soon as I get it will make it available to those who have asked. Some key points fed back to me were the financial benefit of contributing to Foundation, the attractiveness of Rotary District grants and the importance of prioritising Rotary projects.

A significant new Project
Victor’s team continue to research and talk to various community organisations to identify a significant new project for the club. The Board will get an update report this week and we will devote one of our club meetings in June to discussing this. Thanks to Victor.

New Rules and By-Laws
The Board is now reviewing the recommended draft of these, and aims to present them to you by the end of the month, for adoption at a meeting Special General Meeting in June. Thanks to Brian.

Rotary International
You should have received emails directly from District alerting you to the International Convention (June 20-26) that was to be held in Hawaii is now being delivered on line – so we can all go for free. It is a good opportunity to hear some excellent speakers and gain insights into Rotary. Details at https://www.riconvention.org/en .
