From the Editor Good mornington to my fellow Rotarians, I hope both you and your partners and families are all well and in good health. Another week in Isolation / Lockdown and with next Sunday's Public Announcements within reach, hopefully we will get a bit of good news in regards to a bit more freedom, travel and more importantly the likelihood to be able to " gather" and get to see one another and visit our families and friends. And then there were four left !!!. For me the footy year is truly over and if I thought it couldn't get any worse, the Bunnings Footy Tips, which I entered into at the start of the season has just released its results, I went so so good, not !! . There were 29 Team Members in total in the Comp and my footy tipping skills saw me finish in 30th position !!!! 😳 With the recent inclement weather we have been experiencing of the past two months, something had to give, and unfortunately that was a large section of the roadway along the Esplanade at Mt Martha. Thanks to John Renowden, last week, he sent out an e-mail pertaining to the landslide, with some notes and reports from Council. Hers is a snapshot from John's email. Hi All Following interest in the landslide at Mt Martha Esplanade at last week’s meeting attached find shire response I received. 30 tonnes of vegetation ..trees dirt rocks and plants slid from the residentianl side of the esplanade across the road and over the side of the road towards the beach. No one injured, but Road closed Hopefully to open next Monday..12 Oct 2020 Pics Courtesy of Local Media & Residents Last Week's Guest Speaker - Bevan Main. For those who were able to log-in at last weeks Club Meeting we had the pleasure to see and join in with Bevan Main and listen and converse (all the way from the USA) with this amazing young man. The work both he and his colleges are undertaking into Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is to be commended at the highest level. To think one day in the future it just may be possible to recognise and diagnose early onset symptoms of this terrible affliction and with the aim to even treat CTE, keep up this fantastic research Bevan. It was also very pleasing, for us to have it be somewhat of a family affair with Bevan's Parents tuning in from Echuca up on "The Murray" and Bevan's sister, Micaela, who also joined us, and enlightened us with a few sibling antidotes about Bevan's sporting prowess. It was also very pleasing to have some of our Club Members present, on the night, who were among the members that nominated Bevan some years ago. A big thanks to Victor and George-Ann for organising and presenting this very enlightening evening. Also in regards to last weeks Meeting with our "normal meeting presentations" we celebrated " Lift The Lid " so thanks to those who donated to this very worthwhile cause, and for those who still wish to donate, its not too late !!! Just " open up your computer and initiate an EFT to"; Bendigo Bank Limited: BSB- 633000 - Acct 146806334 This Weeks Upcoming Club Meeting- Wednesday 14th October @ 6:00pm , via ZOOM This week, John Renowden is hosting a friend of his, Paul Rhodes, who has been working with Blaze Aid in Gippsland to explain their activities. Meeting ID: 927 056 436 Password: 294331 A Feature Story from our Clubs History Files : As most of us are aware, our club presently has quite a few projects " in the pipeline ". Many are currently in state of awaiting deliberations from outside authorities and funding considerations. Hopefully we will be able to progress with them once we get back to some form of normality. One Project still underdevelopment is related to The Rotary 100 Year Celebrations - Major Project, so having said that I thought to reflect back on clubs very first 'major project ". This project was undertaken only a few short years, four to be precise, after the Foundation of The Rotary Club of Mornington, back in 1947. The following article comes from our clubs, Half Century of Service Booklet. The Fledging Club in its fourth year adopted a proposal by Harry Lowe to build a Pre School Centre. Emil Madsen prepared the plans and obtained necessary approvals. After quantities were taken out on approved plans, the estimated cost was * £8,500.0.0 . A Government grant of ** £5,500.0.0 . was sought and the balance had to be found from the local Community. The Shire agreed to manage the construction project and a Committee of Rotarians, Karl Heine, Max Chisholm and Harry Lowe had the task of liaising with the Shire. A carnival in the park raised ***£250.0.0 towards the Pre School and numerous other fund raising activities by both Rotary and the community were held. The Pre School Centre located in Cromwell Street and now known as the Leslie Moorhead Kindergarten includes an Infant Centre and has been an important amenity for children of two generations. Comparison Costs from Year 1950 to Year 2020 allowing for inflation Calculations in AUD $ * $486,242.00 ** $286,024.00 *** $14,301.00 Pic of the original Pre School following construction (Top) and the Pre School as it stands in 2020 (Bottom) Birthdays/ Anniversaries This week we acknowledge the Birthday of one of our Members partners (David Lancashire) , in Denise Busuttil for this coming Sunday the 18th October 2020. President’s Report – 07th October 2020 Upcoming meeting – this Wednesday Night This week, John Renowden is hosting a friend of his, Paul Rhodes, who has been working with Blaze Aid in Gippsland to explain their activities. The following week, Richard is hosting on International and Foundation Night to coincide with World Polio Day on the 24th October. New Members and visitors to this week’s meeting We have two visitors to this week’s meeting who have applied for membership – Peter and Roberta Orton. Australian Rotary Health. The board will now confirm with Australian Rotary Health that the members approved that we undertake another PHD Scholarship. We expect a candidate with be sought early in the 2021-22 year. This time it is for research into bowel cancer. This involves a financial commitment of $12k pa for 3 years, (possibly 3.5) so a total of $36k (possibly $42k). Ross K will make a direct contribution of $6k pa. The balance will be funded from Club Project funds. Sunday October 18 am. Clean up your patch. We may not be able to undertake our normal projects or activities but here is something we can do in our own neighbourhood this Sunday. Details at https://fb.me/e/5s6G2oDSv Progress with our potential community projects. On Monday Victor and I met with John Baker CEO, and the new Director of Community, Pauline Gordon, to discuss our potential projects to assist with homelessness. This coming Friday Peter Jay and I will be meeting the new Director of Place, Jessica Wingad, to discuss the various potential beautification projects that are on the table. The District 9820 Club Project Showcase last Sunday, was a very good chance to see what clubs are up. Sixty people attended. The sessions on each of MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly), Bushfire Relief (Peter Sindrey from Bairnsdale), Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) and a Leongatha Club Project with Timor Leste that received a Global Grant, were particularly informative. They were recorded and will be available through the District website. Regards Ross |
