From the Editor

Good evening my fellow Mornington Rotarians, well hopefully we are all not starting to " go a bit stir crazy ", and I'm sure with all those wise and experienced heads out there, you are endeavouring to find new and wonderful ways to occupy yourselves at home ? This isolation, once again, has had a very dramatic effect on our daily lives and this year's ANZAC Day Commemorative Celebrations and Memorial Ceremonies has certainly payed testament to this. I for one really enjoyed the manner in which we payed tribute to our ANZACs' this year as we stood at the end of our drive-way's in the minutes before dawn with a candle in hand and the Mobile Phone tuned into ABC National Radio listening to the broadcast from the Australian War Memorial Service. If you have any pics of the " turn out " in your Street please send to me so I can pass them on to our fellow Club Members in next weeks Bulletin.

With no formal ANZAC Ceremony this year is was great to see a number of wreaths still being laid (observing social distancing) at the Cenotaph at Barkly St

The Club's recent online ZOOM meeting saw the Board Meeting conducted, and under the current circumstances, it proved very successful. Within this weeks Presidents Report  from Ross (below) contains an overview of the main items that were raised and discussed. Not being able to actively present the report via our normal means, the Minutes , once compiled and signed off , will be sent out later this week, for all members to peruse.

There have been, for those who are "tuning into social media ", an enormous amount of articles pertaining to the current isolation restrictions , and there was one in particular that I came across that I found quite amusing, that being ;

I feel like I'm eighteen again, petrol is 89.0 cents a litre, Ive been grounded and can't go out, and I can't sneak down to the Pub for beer !!

My Isolation Project

This week we have the Renowdens' in full swing with a garden / driveway project.  As John said to me " a long overdue area in need of a bit of TLC ", and now its looks a lot more in order and very pleasing to the eye.

Warm Clothing for Bushfire Relief

You would have all received an email last week from District asking for warm clothing for the Bushfire impacted areas. Mt Eliza Rotary Club are doing a delivery of what they have assembled,  so if you have something to contribute please " drop a line " to our President, Ross  and he can arrange the items to get to those in need. (you don’t have to knit it …maybe just look in your wardrobe as to what you don’t need, as I have done )

Raise a Glass & Toast Your Fellow Club Members

Amongst the many items up for discussion at our recent Board Meeting last week was the inability for us, like everyone else out there, to not be able to get together at our weekly meetings and partake in a social glass of Red and the evening gastronomical delights of our meal. So as a suggestion, from our Social Officer Eileen , she put forward the concept of  " raising a glass and toasting ourselves" as we usually do when we gather at the Mornington Hotel for our Club Meetings.  This proposal was unanimously meet with approval by the entire Board.  So to join in all you need to do is: take a photo on your smart phone  (a selfie would be great) of yourself and your partner having a cleansing ale or fine glass of Red , and you could even take the pic over your meal at the dinner table and then send it thru to me !!! I can can compile the photo's into a mini album , so we can all view them at our next online ZOOM Meeting.  This is one innovative and new way in which we can all stay in touch whilst we " wait out the isolation "

President's Update
President’s Report

Hello to another week in self-isolation.
Coming Up
This week we do not have a meeting, but the following week, May 6, we will have a normal club meeting on Zoom. Details in next week’s Bulletin.

Anzac Day
It was an Anzac Day with a difference, with no Services or gatherings. Thank you to David Lancashire for organising and laying a wreath at Mornington Memorial Park, on behalf of the Club.
After attending the dawn service, on our rear deck, Lyn and I walked to the Memorial Park and with only another couple of people there, had the opportunity to walk around and respect the various memorials. Amongst them I discovered a Rotary Park Bench and another Rotary Gazebo which commemorates our foundation of Australian Rotary Health.
(coincidentally,  I also discovered, that I did not know of,  a bench donated by the 4th Anti Tank, my Dad’s regiment and memorial for the Thai Burma Railway where he was, and a bench for Gull Force, that my Uncle was part of, and a memorial commemorating their capture and escape from Ambon. I am now investigating what the local links are.)

Board Meeting
As you know we had an on line Board meeting last Wednesday night, and as usual we covered a lot of ground, which I hope I have accurately summarised below.
  1. Final Approval of some Project Expenditures.

We approved remittance of funds for the following projects previously agreed by the members….

  1. A Sky Hydrant, details at https://www.disasteraidinternational.com/sky-hydrant.html

  1. A contribution to Lift the Lid (Australian Rotary Health). This fits neatly with their current CV19 Lift the Lid campaign. Details at https://australianrotaryhealth.org.au/

  1. A contribution to Polio Plus at https://www.endpolio.org/

  1. A contribution to end Trachoma one of the Rotary Club of Melbourne’s Centenary Projects. Details at https://www.endtrachoma2020.org.au/

  1. Indigenous Scholarship for 2021. We are still waiting to hear of the appointment of the 2020 candidate that we funded last year, but agreed to proceed with another for next year. Details at https://australianrotaryhealth.org.au/

All members should be very proud of this significant contribution to these very worthy causes, all enabled by our hard work on the Art Show,  Bunnings BBQ’s over the last year. Great work !

  1. Continued development of some potential Projects

We continue to develop firm proposals for member consideration for significant community projects
  1. The Lid on the Long
  2. Bushfire Relief
  3. Gateway Park

  1. A Significant new Project
Prompted by Victor’s email initiative a couple of weeks ago we are searching for that “big new project”. There is a sub Committee Chaired by Victor, and including Peter, Ross, Eileen and David, who had several meetings so far, including a long one with Stuart Davis Meehan at the Mornington Community Information and Support Centre. The intent is to develop 2 or 3 good ideas for consideration by the Board and members.
  1. Board and Committee Succession Plan for next year

Long Term succession planning is very important for all clubs. Ross has agreed to do another year as President, and is working with Brian, as President elect to ensure all Committee Chairs have Deputies and succession plans in place. We are very fortunate that all Board members are continuing, excepting of course Libby, whose year as Past President concludes.

  1. A new Set of Rules and By-laws.
Rotary International has provided a new Club Constitution and By Laws for Clubs. We are forming a sub committee to review and recommend them. So far Brian and Ross have volunteered but if you are interested you are every welcome to join us.
  1. Art Show
This is the club priority. We are planning for next year’s show now. A key item is actioning Ian Garrow’s excellent comment, at our last meeting, about ensuring we develop some philanthropic support to supplement sponsorship in what will be a challenging business environment. A sub committee, led by John Parkinson has been set up to lead this.

Presidents Cluster Meeting
On Sunday I attended another Club Presidents Meeting on Zoom. The main topic of discussion was the intent to have a common Centenary Project, and it appears agreed that this will be based on the development of the Bay Trail. I am part of the working group on this.
So all clubs are being asked, as what form this project should take? Benches, picnic tables, gazebos, bike racks, tool stands, signage, maps, vegetation and beatification? Any comments?
In our area this could be the work being considered for Gateway Park or it could be some sort of beautification project on the corner of Yuilles and Watts Road, near the railway station? Or ????

Conclusion
If you would like to know more or discuss any of the above please give me a call. Our Zoom meeting on May 6 will also provide the opportunity to discuss any of this.

Regards

Ross
