Bulletin August 14 - Vol 77 , Issue No 4
(Darren England/AAP PHOTOS)

Greetings to all, and apologies to our President for putting the Matildas before her in this Bulletin, but a wonderful game of football that brought so many people together on Saturday in support of an Australian team in a global sport takes 1st place, just this once ..... or twice when we win again.

President's Report

This week we have Andrew Young, Commodore from the Mornington Yacht Club as our guest speaker.  We look forward to hearing about what’s happening at the club under his energetic and enthusiastic leadership.  Given the number of members who are currently away, partners, friends and neighbours are most welcome to attend.

On Tuesday, Jo Davie and I will be attending Mt Eliza Rotary Club’s meeting to hear about the Interplast trip to Tonga.  This was made possible by the eight clubs in the Peninsula cluster whose support enabled a medical team from Interplast to undertake 34 life-changing surgeries.

MUNA is on this Saturday at Gustav Nossal High School in Berwick.  Mornington Rotary Club will be sponsoring two teams from Padua College.  Judy Seager and I will be there.  Let Judy or me know if you want to attend.

On Monday 28 August, there will be a combined meeting with Mt Martha Rotary Club.  President Dick Cox from Somerville-Tyabb will be speaking on their very successful Interschools Activity Challenge.  This is another opportunity to build closer ties with our neighbouring Rotary Clubs.

Guest Speaker 02/08/23
John Vale gave the Club an interesting, yet sobering talk about the community radio station he has been involved with for many years, 3RPP 98.7, based in Mornington.
The studio is located near the Men’s Shed and Peninsula Community Theatre in the complex at the top of Wilson’s Road and our club had a hand in establishing the studio and in its construction. It was founded in 1984, has 170 members and is staffed by volunteers, except for the two top positions. It has two transmitters, one at Arthur’s Seat and reception is as far a Portsea, over to Geelong and to Frankston which has a repeater.
It is one of 359 community radio stations around Australia and provides local news, musical programmes, sports coverage and panel discussions on various topics, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It also offers training programmes and supports students interested in media studies. It relies mainly on sponsorships, membership subscriptions and Commonwealth grants (all tied to their FM licence) but along with many Not for Profit organisations, there is an ongoing challenge to cover all the costs, particularly utilities.
John went on to say that along with other forms of community communication, including local newspapers, the radio stations are under threat as never before from this digital revolution and advent of social media, A I, ‘fake news’ on the internet and a diminishing audience. While John stated that they will need to embrace more visual news, via platforms such as Facebook, and continue to press on with their 5-year Strategic Plan, it is unclear how they will go forward with at least a stable listening audience. Our hope is that they and other community radio stations manage to survive.
Our club will certainly liaise more strongly with the station in promoting Rotary membership and also to promote the Art Show at the end of January.
3RPP 98.7 is always keen to engage volunteers is all aspects of its operation, so if you would like to present a program, assist in technical aspects or work behind the scenes in other ways, please contact the station.

Community Report

As members know we currently have a Council Place Making Grant for $10k in our accounts. Originally intended for park furniture in Gateway Park in March 2022, Council in fact installed its own.

Over the last 12months we have worked with several Council staff to move this project to the Mornington Railway Station precinct. We have approval for that now and are trying to find someone in Council to work with, in terms of the best project etc. As you may know we planted some trees in this area a few years ago and our recent Hunters Crossing project adjoins this area. The Railway Society have suggested a number of projects including redoing their signage, some dead revegetation removal and replanting. There are also possible bigger projects like the platform extension. Ideally what we would like to have is a plan for this whole area, including its long term layout, provision of services, toilets, and BBQ etc and furniture.
When we get to the right person in Council we will be suggesting this plan as something we could contribute to. The timing of this is appropriate as Council is getting close to releasing a draft of where the Peninsula Trail will run in this area. We will keep you informed as things develop. Thanks to Ian Horton for volunteering to be part of this project team. More volunteers are welcome.

Howard Zinn, was a catalyst for progressive change in the US, and globally, for more than 60 years. This quote from him sums up Rotary's commitment to service:
“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
Let's all perform acts of kindness each day and continue to make transformational change through Rotary.
