From the Editor

Good evening to my fellow Mornington Rotarians, partners and families. Well today marks a bit of a special occasion and I am referring to the news / announcements that was promulgated earlier today, that I'm sure we have all been eagerly awaiting for some two months. The abilty to move / travel freely with more latitude to get out and about , and for those with families and friends outside Melbourne maybe a trip or two could very well be in the planning.

As a footnote pertaining to stats and the long path we all have endured together since 22nd March this year, here's a quick look at the data:
Lockdown No 1- 22 March to 31 May 2020 = 71 days , then we had a slight reprieve of " freedom" thru June, only 30 days, then we all got hit pretty hard, from 31 July until 25th October = 117 days. In all we have endured some 188 days in lockdown. For the many Rotarians, family and friends that I speak to the one resounding message that comes from this amazing, difficult and devastating event we have all have been thru is " we will all remember 2020 a year like no other " !!

Community Helping Hand

Last week three of our members, Brian Mann, Peter Jay and Ross Kilborn (our Club President) lent a hand to assist a local resident who thru inability via a injury to maintain the upkeep and gardening of his residence. Initially the task seemed somewhat daunting with the view this might not be achievable, but with a fair bit " roll up the sleeves " and get stuck into it, resulted in a pretty good outcome.  To say the least there were a few rolls of whippersnipper cord exhausted throughout the morning. Great to see Rotary out there in all facets of helping the community and making things a bit better for those in need.
With trusty Whipper Snipper in hand, Ross Kilborn reducing the onslaught of growth

Upcoming Club Meeting- Wednesday 11th Nov 2020 : A Social Gathering  !!

Our next scheduled Club Meeting we will hopefully see, weather permitting on Wednesday 11th November 2020, our first social gathering since way back on the 19th Feb 2020. It certainly has been some time and the specific details of this " evening out" are contained in our Presidents Report, as below. PS , I think this is our first meeting that dosen't require a log-in and password !!!

Does this location look familiar ?  lets all hope we can make it this coming Wednesday.

A Reflection of the last few Months ; Isolation Projects

I can remember when we were all forced to remain at home, in what seems like last year !!!! and as the weeks passed I'm sure many of us " looked to activities " to keep our mind and body busy.  Detailed below is a small selection of pics of some of those innovative Isolation Projects.

Just a small selection of the many pics that were sent thru to the editor by our innovative Mornington Rotarians and Partners. A lot, probably a very very large amount of well keep and new gardening projects seemed to be the focus of the lockdown. But to all those pets out there, more walkies they have ever had, and their probably pretty happy now to just laze around and have rest !!!

Birthdays/ Anniversaries

Over the next few weeks we will see a number of our Members and Partners celebrate their Birthdays and Anniversaries. Next week to start off we have the two birthday boys in John Parkinson and Ken Bilham.  On behalf of our President, The Board , all our Members and their Partners we wish to extend a very happy birthday to young John and Ken, well done and congratulations.

Memorial Service for Philippa Moore

The specific details of the Memorial Service for Philippa Moore are contained within The Presidents Report, as annotated below.

A Get Well Message

On behalf of our President, The Board all our Members and their Partners we wish Betty Corke a speedy recovery for next week and we all look forward to catching up, very soon, with both Betty and Dennis, for a glass of Red and a chat . Take care stay safe, happy and healthy.

A Time to Reflect - Remembrance Day

With so much going on at present in our busy and somewhat out of the norm life routines, the time to reflect and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, will once again be held this coming week on the 11th of the 11th.  To all those brave and courageous men and women who left Australia to protect our way of life, in so many theatres of conflict and didn't come home, we say thank you and Lest We Forget

President’s Report – 08th November 2020

Some important member welfare updates.

Ted Moore The funeral for Philippa will be on Tuesday (Nov 10) at 1.30pm. Because of restricted numbers due to COVID, friends and members are only able to view it via the webcast- visit Tobin Brothers Website ( https://tobinbrothers.com.au  and type Philippa Moore in the Funeral Notice/Webcast search bar,  down on the right hand side).

The funeral will then move to Mornington Cemetery where up to 50 people are allowed. Following that they are going to the Long Table.
I know Ted will be happy to receive visitors at home after Wednesday.

We wish Betty Corke the best, as she is going in for another operation Monday, and expects to be in hospital for a week. We are all thinking of her and Dennis.
It was good to see our Winged Warrior, Ian, on Zoom last week – and smiling!

This Wednesday Night Nov 11 – A Social Night at the Long Table

As I write this the weather forecast is open to interpretation – warm with rain that could have passed, and an impending southerly change? Let’s take a chance, plan for it, and cancel if we have to. I am working on a contingency plan and will let everyone know if we change.

I am suggesting we start at 5pm and BYO everything, including partner, for an enjoyable drink and meal. If it does not work for this Wed we will do it on the 25th.

Eileen is in contact with the Mornington hotel about when we might be able to resume there.

The following week, the 18th, is the AGM on Zoom, and you should have received the Agenda and Annual Report last week. We will meet as normal at 6pm and have the AGM at 630.

BBQ’s We are hoping that Bunnings BBQ’s will return in December, under COVID Safe Plans, and we have applied. There is also a possibility of running BBQ’s at the Wednesday Market if anyone is interested in leading that. (Christmas Carols in Mornington Park are not happening so there will be no BBQ for that)

Mornington Community Information and Support Centre & Christmas. The MCISC will be doing their Christmas Hampers differently this year, more likely based on vouchers. But they would still like to do the Presents. Nicholas Lynch Real Estate has confirmed their support in promoting it, and being a Present Drop off point. Who is interested to lead this project? (it’s not onerous).

Australia Day 2021. Nationally Rotary is being supported by the Federal Government to conduct community events, in a COVID safe way, next Australia Day. Coincidentally it is the last day of the Art Show so there is potential for us to do something adjacent to the Theatre. Any ideas are welcome – it could be a morning tea, a music ensemble or ?????

The Bay Trail - The Centenary Project.  Last Friday the Cluster representatives, Peter Rawlings, Steve Daley and I met with Council Officers to talk about what project(s) Clubs can undertake to enhance the Bay Trail. It was a very promising meeting with Rotary being invited to play a leading role in engaging the community and advocating for it.
I will create time at an upcoming meeting to explain more.

Congratulations to our newly elected Briars Councillors, Steve Holland, Despi O’Connor and Anthony Marsh. I think Steve lives in Mt.Eliza and Despi and Anthony in Mt.Martha. Our newest member Peter Orton just missed out. We will formally welcome Peter and Roberta prior to the AGM

Regards

Ross
