Last Weeks Club Meeting - Guest Speaker

Last week our guest speaker was Andrew Swaine from the Mornington Railway Preservation Society. Andrew has been President for eight years and his father was previously President. Andrew started with an outline of the history of the railway dating back to 1889 and its service as a freight line for the Coolstores and quarry and its twentieth century history of both freight and rail motors, each suspended at various times. In the 1970’s there was an era of “Vintage Trains” bringing visitors from Melbourne to Mornington. The line’s use was suspended in 1979 – it has never been closed. In 1991 its use for a Tourist Railway was approved and the Railway Preservation Society was formed, to restore and operate the line. In 1997 they established Moorooduc Station, previously a neglected siding. In 1999 the line to Mornington officially re opened with Mornington Rotary playing a role in this, constructing the opening stage. The Society is entirely volunteer run with 180 volunteers, a quarter of them very active. They have continued to acquire assets including steam locomotives, carriages, the footbridge from Fitzroy, a turntable from Deniliquin, and recently the old Cheltneham Station, to be re-erected at Moorooduc. Andrew presented a range of projects they want to complete including the extension to Baxter, the completion of the projects associated with the previously acquired assets, and extension of the platform at Mornington, as it currently only accommodates one carriage. It was a very professional presentation that highlights what a great asset we have in Mornington for both residents and visitors. The Club looks forward to continuing its support for them.

Presidents Report - 8th Feb 2022

Good afternoon to all,

Back from Holiday’s
A wise old Football Legend once said ‘ a weeks a long time in footy “ well that might be the case buts its certainly even longer in Rotary, and by that I am referring to our last few weeks of somewhat feverish activity. With our big 50thAnnibversary Art Show being such a major event on our yearly Calendar, the temporary postponement of Club Meeting’s, the fantastic weather which see’s our town full to the brim, and Club Members and families gathering together, Bunning’s BBQ’s etc., has seen a flurry of activity within our Club. The inability of my Internet provider along the Gippsland Coast has resulted in not only a physical absence from duties but a communication void that presented me with some 145 e-mails in my “in tray” upon return from holidays, so its great to be back, I think, and this week President’s Report contains a number of items of news.

Mornington Rotary Club – 75th Anniversary Dinner
Now we have all but concluded our 2022 Art Show, the next major event on our busy calendar will see our Clubs 75thAnniversary Dinner.  At this stage there are a few dates proposed being either 13th or 14th of April or the 20th or 21st April, Note these dates are either side of the Easter Break, also noting our Club’s first Meeting was held on the 18th April 1947. At this weeks upcoming Club Meeting we will need to “ lock in a date “ that is conducive for the majority of Members to enable all to attend and celebrate this very important event.

District 9820 Annual Conference
With only three short weeks to go a number of our Club Members and their Partners are gearing up for what appears as a great Conference over the period 25th to 27thFeb 2022 in Traralgon. Our On to Conference Rep, Jo Davie, has down a splendid job of co-ordinationing our Clubs attendance and from what I see we are ready to go for a great Rotary and Social Fellowship for the three days. On the 01st Feb 2022, our Rotary District 9820 Conference Chair, PDG Jane Spiers, sent out an e-mail providing all the final up-to-date info and details. If you did not receive this correspondence please drop me a line and I can forward it on.

Lift The Lid
As contained in this weeks issue of our Club Bulletin the Rotary Club of Sorrento has once again extended an Invitation to all Peninsula Rotary Clubs for Members and families to participate in the Annual Walk within the very beautiful surrounds of the Point Nepean Nat Park

Rotary Polio Fundraising Event
With the December 2021 public release of THE DUKE that had to be postponed to 31st March due to Covid however Rotary’s pre-release arrangement allows you to schedule events from 23rd February onward*.
THE DUKE is “a ridiculously charming British comedy” and “stranger-than-fiction true story” of a 60-year old taxi driver who held the government to ransom by stealing Goya’s priceless portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery.
The final date for screening is yet to be finalized but once this has been confirmed I will send out an invitation to all Members and Partner’s

The Peninsula Trail
There have been a number of items of progress over the past month or so in relation to the ongoing Peninsula Trail and Ross had provided an overview as detailed below
  • Councillors have included the Peninsula Trail in their top 6 priorities for the Federal election candidates, and our now meeting them, to discuss it.
  • The results of the application to the Victorian Growing Suburbs Fund for the Baxter to Somerville section is likely to be known shortly. Success will mean it can start this year. If not successful it goes up the list of priorities for next year.
  • The application to the Victorian Regional Tourism Fund for the Mornington to Moorooduc and Southern Peninsula sections will not be known until June. The best thing we can all be doing now is talking to State MP’s about supporting it.
  • Council has updated their website to provide very good information including maps and videos about what the whole project is about, and references it as our Centenary Project. See https://shape.mornpen.vic.gov.au/peninsula-trail. Please share this with your members
