From the Editor Good evening my fellow Mornington Rotarians, well another week in isolation/ lockdown and its starting, from my prespective, to feel not so much like a new lifestyle but in some small way its becoming the norm ! but then again you come back to reality of it and look at the big picture and those everyday practices we all enjoy so much like having the Grandchildren around, going to the park/ beach for a walk, or popping down Main St for that morning pick-me-up coffee, its these things that we miss and the realisation of what this terrible virus is having on all of us. For me and some of my fellow Football Tragic's the lack of watching our favourite team "out on the park " is something that I really miss. At our last " Club Meeting " just gone, it was once again great to see a lot of familiar smiling faces and with the growing success of the Zoom Meeting's we just might be heading towards a more formal meeting structure in the weeks ahead. This coming Wednesday evening our Club will hold a Board Meeting, via Zoom, and among a number of agenda items, we will most likely discuss the format for some of our future " weekly " Club Meetings. With the new segment ' my isolation project " that I kicked off in the last Issue of our Club Bulletin, I can report that I have received a small but significant contribution for all of us to view. My Isolation Project Step aside Ben Lexcen and Kookaburra III, its our very own maritime structural engineer, yes Ian Horton has dusted off his long lost Model of the HMS Bounty. I must admit when Ian mentioned his isolation project, some weeks ago I had visions of the type of models that I put together many years ago, that being the small plastic aircraft models of a Spitfire etc, but no !! not our Ian, this certainly looks like a major project. From what we can see this is no 30 minute quick fix, and perusing over the two pics you might want to have a close look at the page on the left hand side of pic No 1 and check out the instructions, they appear to be written in long hand calligraphy !!! I wonder are these the original plans ? Well done Ian, and hopefully we can get some more pics as the vessel starts to take shape. Our Club President has also been busy with his own Isolation Project and this one will certainly be ongoing for some time. Here's and update from Ross . The Mornington Community Safelink Picking up on Brian’s recent initiative, here’s an update on a project I have been working on, with not quite as tangible result yet, as Brian’s beautiful garden! Recall at this time last year Graeme Rocke was our guest speaker about completing the bike / walking path from the end of the Peninsula Link trail at Moorooduc through to Mornington alongside the old railway line. Well we have now met all the Briars Councillors multiple times, many Council staff, and all the Peninsula politicians from both sides, both State and Federal. Everyone is in support of it as a priority in completing the Bay Trail from Melbourne to Sorrento. All we now need is the funding, around $5m. Whilst this sounds a lot the economic benefit for the area from constructing it is $9m, in the first year, and thereafter there is the ongoing economic benefit of people using it, either for health, commuting, or tourism. Whilst our target for funding has always been the next Federal and State elections the need for local infrastructure projects to help the economic recovery from Covid 19 is compelling, from both an economic and community perspective. Covid 19 has not really impacted our advocacy campaign as we can meet various stakeholders on the phone and via Zoom etc. Indeed our number of followers on our facebook page has increased significantly since people have been out walking and riding more and having time to sign our on line petition etc. Members from The Mornington Council, Local Politicians and members from the Safelink Trail Committee. This meeting and subsequent picture was conducted prior to the current lockdown restrictions |
