From The Editor Good afternoon to all my fellow Mornington Rotary Members and Partner's, hope all is going along OK. The days are getting a bit longer as we slowly move into Spring so we have a few things to look forward to, for those AFL tragic's the Final Series is just about to "kick off', also after such a long break The Royal Melbourne show will once again return in Sep, the Peninsula is slowly coming out of its Winter hibernation and there's an increase in locals and vistior's up and about, the Shelter Over The Long Table is finally showing signs of timber structure. As for our Club's going's on we are still in somewhat of a reduced activity with only a handful of Member's "left in town", but September should see a return to Melb from the "sunny set up North". Club Meetings - CFA/FSV Presentation Three weeks ago we hosted Neil Schlipalius who is currently the Senior Station Officer at Fire Rescue Victoria, in Rosebud. Neil has spent most of his life on the Peninsula and joined the then CFA at a very early age after being inspired by what he witnessed at a CFA incident as a young teenager many, many years ago. Neil worked his way thru the ranks of CFA and also the newly re-orgainsed FSV and has reached a very high position with some 38yrs of unbroken continuous Service, a remarkable achievement. Neil's presentation was very informative and he gave many incidents some of which were humorous with lots of laughs from our Members, of which one comes to mind with his analagy of "zero call outs to cats struck up a tree" !!!, but also some very serious and frightening incidents. One thing that came out throughout his presentation was when it comes to fire, the panic, fear and loss of all logical thinking that overtakes members of the Public involved in serious fire incident. Neil took us thru a timeline of CFA/ FSV training and asset equipment resources (the big red Fire Truck etc !) and he also brought along the latest high tech Protective Clothing, which was very impressive. Neil also "took us thru" the re-organistion/ reform of the CFA and the then MFB and it was very interesting to hear both sides of the story. One very informative item of note is the now "First Responders" approach to triple 000 calls, in that, with an emergency situation will very likely result in the CFA/FSV being the first emergency service to arrive on site ( possible before an Ambulance) and it may not be a fire incident. Neil's presentation was extremely informative , very positive and encouraging. Since the presentation our President has received a number off calls / SMS's passing on their thoughts and comments of a great "Guest Speaker". A very big thanks to Neil and he is keen to return to Mornington Rotary, possible early next year, to revise his presentation to a wider audience, and we would certainly welcome him back !! Our Special Gust Speaker, Neil Schlipalius with Club Member and golfing partner, Peter Jay Club Meetings - Schools Showcase Evening Last week at our Club Meeting we hosted our Annual Schools Showcase Evening. After a very long break from this special event it was great to have a number of Students from three of our local schools, accompanied by their teachers and also some of the Parents attend. The evening was hosted in whole buy our Youth Chair Chair, Judy Seager. Schools in attendance comprised of Mornington Secondary College, Moorooduc Primary and Mornington Primary Schools. Each group of students gave us an insight into a number of projects and "in school activities" there are involved in. First off it was fantastic to "hear" from the students from Moorooduc who along with a summary of their environmental projects give us a very entertaining performance on their newly acquired "drum sets" as part of their Healing Programme . we then had Mornington Primary who presented a reading/literature program they are involved with. We heard how the students, via a very in depth Reading Skills programme, have now been able to clearly and effectively articulate their grammar, reading and vocabulary. The stories and in particular the ability to expressive their ideas and then transform them into written prose was to say the least quite amazing. Mornington Secondary College gave us a presentation on their experience at the Rotary MUNA Seminar held earlier this year and it was so impressive to hear of the very positive concept and subsequent skill set that this experience has had on them. The night would not have been complete without our Clubs Awards being our Citersen Awards, in which via input from each school, we present and award which provides not just a plaque and a Farrels Gift Voucher, but a very, very important acknowledgment of what it means to be an active and supportive students both within the school and community environment, well done to all students who attended our Showcase Evening , your presentations were very informative. Also a big thanks to Judy Seager who after some months of planning presented all of us with a great evening. . . . Upcoming Club Meeting At this weeks Club Meeting, tomorrow evening, Wednesday 24th August 2022, as a result of reduced numbers attending we will have a Social Evening at the Mornington Hotel. Rotary Zone 8 Regionalisation Pilot Project On Friday of last week, I logged in to the ZOOM meeting in regards to the RI Zone 8 Regionalisation Pilot Project. After viewing the PPT Presentation and “taking in “the relevant information, I can report a few items of note. - A team has been working for some time to establish a pilot to support our clubs to explore, develop and test a new model of governing and operating Rotary that is relevant for our region.
- as the President of our club, I will be asked to cast a vote on behalf of our current active members, whether you wish to participate in the pilot or not. This vote must reflect the views of your members.
- Prior to casting our Clubs Vote I will present an overview of the Project via a face-to-face meeting, and for those Members who cannot attend this Meeting, a PPT Presentation will be sent thru to you, for all members to view
- The vote is to cast in September (next month) with exact date yet to promulgated
- At our Club Meeting on Wednesday 31st Aug 2022, I will present all the relevant information to enable members to have a clear and informative prospective of the Project.
Peninsula Cluster – Interplast Project At the last Presidents Peninsula Custer Meeting the past President of Tyabb- Somerville Rotary (Chris Such) presented a proposal to support a project into Interplast. Since then, there has been a very positive response from all the Clubs and Chris has since followed up with an e-mail aimed at further engagement at Club Level. " We are delighted that the Cluster Presidents were so positive about our objective to re-invigorate and re-launch Rotary’s involvement with Interplast after Covid. We would like to thank Peter Rawlings our ADG, for giving us the opportunity to engage with the Cluster. Because there are so many new members within Clubs, we feel that it’s important to come and deliver a presentation that explains Interplast." I will now re-visit our Clubs Meeting Calendar with the view of inviting Chis along to an upcoming Club Meeting to provide us with more detailed progress report on this Cluster Project and advise all our Members of a date. Around The Bay Event As mentioned, / presented at our Club Meeting two weeks ago, now we are starting to regain some sense of moving out of COVID there are now many Community Events being “physically undertaken ‘. The Around the Bay Event is one of these, after a two-year absence and it will take place on Sunday 9th October 2022. The details of the event are as shown below: - Notwithstanding our false starts due to Covid in the past years, we will be once again volunteering as marshals for the Around the Bay bike ride and invite RC Mornington to join us at the Sorrento Rest Area. As a reminder this event allows us to fund scholarships for kids from disadvantaged families to reach their optimum level in education through The Smith Family Learning for Life program. Bicycle Network pays Rotary $50 per volunteer shift and Rotary donates this to the Learning for Life program
- Sorrento The needs are 8 vols for 8:00 to 11:30 am and 8 vols for 11:30 to 3:00 pm. Current commitments are 4 vols from Rotary M for the morning and 2 vols from Rotary M for the afternoon. That leaves current gaps at 4 for the morning and 6 for the afternoon
