Join the meeting at: The Meeting ID is : 927 056 436 , and the Password is; 294331 From the Editor Good morning my fellow Mornington Rotarians. Another week in isolation another week at home, or is it ? It was great to hear and experience an easing of the restrictive social outings that we all have experienced over the last six weeks. The weather has been on our side the past four days and on my regular trips to the Supermarket and Bunnings, for those essential home projects, !!! it was very noticeable to see the increase of road and foot traffic around the Peninsula. Lots of people out and about and hopefully we don't experience a mini resurgence in the nasty little virus, and we can start to get back to some form of normality in our lives. For my family it was great to visit our Daughter and the Grandchildren to celebrate our Son-in-Law, (Peter's) 40th Birthday. It seems as though its been an eternity since we have been able to catch up with family and it really makes you aware of how much family and close friends are such an integral and vital part of our lives. I hope that many of you have been able to get out and pay a visit to those special people in our lives that we love and cherish and as we progress, hopefully some time in the near future we, as a club, can re-unite in a social environment , to be able share a meal a glass of Red, in one another's company. My Isolation Project; From our President, Ross World Bee Day May 20th Influenced by a guest speaker we had 18 months ago, I bought a bee hive and have been learning all about keeping bees, though not yet successfully enough to produce honey for me to harvest. Interestingly in my reading recently I read about a book “Bee Democracy” by Thomas Seeley. It identifies in bees “Five Habits of Highly Effective Groups.” 1 Compose the decision-making group of individuals with shared interest and mutual respect. Obviously like minded people in the group are important. They need sincere and positive goals paramount for the group. Each members personal value needs to be respected by all. 2 Minimize the leader’s influence on the group’s thinking. The leader serves mainly to shape the process, and not over influence the results. (The queen in fact does not take part in this decision making at all) 3 Seek diverse solutions to the problem Uncover a profusion of possible solutions in the hope that one will prove excellent. A democratic group can greatly surpass that of a lone individual. Group numbers need to be sufficient, diverse and independent, and each member is encouraged to search for solutions individually. (Bees travel many kilometres and inspect many places, and need to consider many factors looking for a possible home) 4 Aggregate the group’s knowledge through debate. The group demonstrate that a democratic group can function effectively, without a leader if the group members agree on the problems they face and on the protocol they will use to make their decisions. First identify the available options, by agreeing on the problem they face and on the protocol needed to make the decision. (Bees attempt to convince others of a possible home, even lead them to view it and then give up when they have inspected another’s place.) 5 Use quorum responses for cohesion, accuracy and speed. Voting can reduce an ongoing problem issue. If there are dissenting members who are outnumbered, for the sake of achieving consensus, they need to accept and follow with the majority, but only when say minimum of 80% are in agreement. Otherwise more discussion is necessary. (Bees normally give in gracefully and thereafter totally support the decision, when they see the home they picked is not the majority choice). Sounds like a Rotary Club doesn’t it ? Our Club President looking the part of the Master Apiarist. Happy Birthday Wishes: On behalf of all our Club Members and Partners we wish to extend our well wishes to Tess Coady for a very happy and enjoyable Birthday just gone, and we hope Peter has spent heaps of money on a special gift and spoilt you on your special day. Happy Birthday Tess. Computer/ IT Issues: In todays Modern IT / Techno world Smart Phones , iPads, and computers of all types surround us , baffle our senses and at times bombard us with a myriad of information that can all be very daunting. So if you are in need of some assistance to help you navigate thru the amass of techno jargon, fear not help is available. At our last Online ZOOM Meeting, Eileen, offered to help any our our Club Members who may need a bit of assistance in this area. With the easing of " going out and visits " to family and friends, I can along with Eileen pop around to any Members who need a little help with your IT Skills. Please don't hesitate to give me ( Brian your Clubs Communications Officer ) or Eileen a call and we can assist !!! |
