At last weeks we had the pleasure to host Ms Lara Olsen the current CEO of South East Water (SEW). Lara's personnel Bio, extensive professional career and interpersonal skills was very evident throughout her presentation. Lara was appointed as our Managing Director on 17 February 2020, leading the delivery of water, sewerage and recycled water services to 1.91 million people who rely on us every day and every night. customer experience and innovation. So what do SEW do, as Lara explained, every time you turn on a tap or flush a toilet or wash the dishes or make a cup of coffee or have a shower or do your laundry, we’re there. Our role is to bring you high quality water and take wastewater away every day – and we’re working 24/7 to make that happen. It means fixing problems quickly. It means providing efficient and reliable sewerage and trade waste services. It means finding better ways for us to use water, and helping you understand how you can save water, too – so we can make sure there’ll be enough for everyone in the future. We manage and maintain the water and sewerage networks – the pipes, pumping stations, valves and some water recycling plants that bring water to you and take waste away. We buy our fresh drinking water from the government’s water wholesaler, Melbourne Water, that manages the water catchments (the dams) and treats the water to a high standard. To quote a few facts from Lara's presentation their "area of coverage" is quite extensive starting at The Docklands, taking in the CBD out thru the Eastern Suburbs to Bunyip near Gumbuya World on the Princess Hwy, then down thru to Lang Lang , across to the tip of the Mornington Peninsula and all points in between. One alarming item that Lara pointed out was with the current and forecast rainfall that provides our water storage facilities if on the decline and the predictions are that within the next 40 years we will be heavily relying on water desalination plants for drinking water. South East Water currently manages...25,700+ kilometres of pipeline, 82 water pump stations, 273 sewage pump stations, 9 recycled water pump stations, 8 water recycling plants and $4.4 billion of infrastructure and assets.
This article can only provide a very brief outline of Lara's presentation which was extremely enlightening and very, very informative. The one overriding message was that we need to safeguard this life giving chemical for all generations to come. Water certainly is our worlds lifeblood.
Board Meeting - 13th April 2022
Tomorrow evening our Club will conduct its regular Board Meeting so for all members, excluding the Board, its a night off from formal Rotary proceedings. With a very busy few weeks ahead of us being Easter/ School Holidays, our Club's 75th Anniversary Dinner and ANZAC Day Ceremonies our very busy Club Secretary Ian, will provide the Board Meeting Minutes, but there may be a ' bit of a delay", but we will get them out to you. One of the many items to be tabled at this weeks Board Meeting will be a report from each of our Clubs Chairs on their proposed Forecast of Projects and Financial Plans for the remainder of this FY and also for the FY ahead for 2022-2023. From this each Chair will present the information to all members at the next Club Assembly night scheduled for Wednesday 11th May 2022, so if you are available please pencil in this date so as members we can all have input into our Clubs future.
Club Meeting's Presentations and Welcome Desk Duties
At our last Club Meeting some four weeks ago that focused on Club Membership one item of note that was tabled from a majority of the new members (those inducted into the Club within the last few years) was a request to have a "Member of the Month" whereby our long serving and respected mature Club Members can provide a brief 5 to 10 minute presentation on their time in Rotary and general life experiences. These type of presentations promote fellowship within the Club and are an important avenue for all members to get to know one another.
Also in conjunction with the above initiative we will see the re-introduction of each member, on a fortnightly rotational basis throughout the remainder of this calendar year, be assigned to be the Weekly Meeting Welcome and Cash Desk Reception. This task is very easy to carry out, does not detract from the member's involvement within the formal session of the meeting and once again is a great way for all members both new and old within the club to integrate and get to know one another.
Both these re-instigated tasks will recommence after Easter starting at our Club meeting on Wednesday 04th May 2022. Our Club President in conjunction with our Secretary will very shortly be compiling a roster.
ANZAC Day 2022
This year we will see ANZAC Day follow very quickly on the heels of Easter and directly after our Clubs 75th Anniversary Dinner, a busy time ahead. As has been the case for many years now the Mornington Secondary College has extended an invitation to our members to attend their ANZAC Day Service followed by Morning Tea, to be conducted within the College's Grounds on Tuesday 26th April 2022 commencing at 11:00am. With a number of COVID restrictions still in place it is a requirement that any visitor to the College provide upon entry, proof of fully COVID Vaccination status. The Teaching Staff, all the students and the College's Support Staff present a very moving and professional ANZAC Day Ceremony which is a credit to their participation in acknowledging our past and current ADF personnel. If you are planning to attend the service you will need to arrive at the College's Main Reception Office at 10;30am to sign in. Also it is important to inform our current Youth Chair, Judy Seager, so she can provide numbers of our Members to the College. Judy can be contacted on e-mail via: judyseager1@gmail.com or via SMS on Mob Ph - 0448 712012.
RSL Badges -
With all community and Volunteer Organisations Fund Raising is the key to Club's financial assets, and all our RSL's rely on the selling of ANZAC and Remembrance Day Badges and Pins etc to assist their Clubs financial viability. As our own "Club Digger" LCPL Leigh Power informed us last week our own Mornington RSL has had a big decline in retired past ADF serving members and they are seeking our assistance to sell Badges/ Pins in the coming week's. To those members who have volunteered, a very big well done and the message we received from Helen Taylor - Appeals Officer at the Mornington RSL is; if volunteers could be at the Club Rooms next Monday 18th April 2022 between 2:00pm and 4:00pm for an introduction and very importantly to explain the procedure when selling Badges in a Public Place and also the financial procedure's. If these times do not suit could you please contact Helen to arrange an alternative info session. The Mornington RSL is located at 27 Virginia St , Mornington, within the Mornington Industrial Estate and Helen can be contacted via Mob Ph on: 0407 421505.

On Sunday morning just gone, at the very early hour of 9;00am our District Foundation Chair presented a brief Presentation on the process whereby Club’s can apply for grants to assist in the funding for Projects and also for use by Youth Scholarship’s. Both Eileen and myself tuned in and the presentation and the content/format has not altered since the last Seminar. For our Club Chairs this seminar will be provided to each Club and once I get the PPT/ Info notes I will pass on for all to view
Peninsula Trail
With such a very, very large Project of this nature one of the key elements is the Advertising and Marketing for the community to be aware and to “ come on board “ and to this end Ross has produced a very informative and extensive Advertisement to be placed into the MPNG edition/s of this week Newspaper’s. The Ad is eye catching and provides a very informative Graphic Relief Map, updates on the progress thus far in relation to funding, proposed area’s of planned new development, current existing ‘ already in use trail pathways and very importantly the number of ways every member in our community can support via written expressions to local council.
Shine on Awards
For those who may not be to familiar with this Rotary Initiative this is an outstanding annual Australia-wide Rotary recognition program acknowledging exceptional service to others by people with disabilities. With the advent of COVID like many other Programs / Projects Shine on Awards was curtailed over the past two years but has now been re-instigated. The 2020 Award Ceremony looks like finally proceeding this coming mid May after a two year “ delay”
Clubs may nominate people who meet the criteria and all nominees will receive recognition with a Certificate of Commendation. The 'Shine On' recognition acknowledges service to the community by people with disabilities.
These Awards are an excellent way in which Rotary can connect with the community, so if any of our Club Members have a connection with younger members of our Community who you believe may be eligible for consideration for a Shine on Award please contact our Club’s Community Chair, Ross Kilborn or our Youth & New Generation Chair, Judy Seager
