To Rotarians and Friends of Rotary, this edition begins with a statement on conflict from Rotary International: 'Peacebuilding is both a cornerstone of Rotary’s mission and one of our areas of focus. At our core, Rotary is a common ground for people to come together – across nationalities and religions, cultures and histories – and connect around their shared belief in a better tomorrow. That connection is what humanizes us in times of conflict and builds a foundation for lasting peace.' (October 13, 2023) Our club's continued sponsorship of the District 9820 Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) program is one way in which we can promote the ideas of peaceful, respectful dialogue as a way of peace-building. Pam Hall and Judy Seager attended the Padua Whole College Assembly on October 16th, where 2 of our sponsored students, Conor and Flynn, were presented with the MUNA Peace Prize and Perpetual Trophy by Di Harrison, District 9820 MUNA Chair. They will be speakers on Nov.1 along with the other sponsored students, Emily and Lachlan. Teacher Emily O’Dowd will also be present. Please come along to meet and hear these amazing young people. Facebook - It is instant, you can get news out straight away
- It is easy to use
- Any page can be shared with anyone who is interested, called followers. The Art Show has nearly 1000 followers.
- It can be used to advertise and promote events such as the Art Show to our community.
We need to think of it as different to our websites, which are really like the club noticeboard and office, where we keep information and records that we update from time to time. It does not replace the Bulletin, but it is updated as soon as something happens rather than the Bulletin which is weekly or fortnightly. For those who hear risks associated with privacy and spam, well if you are not putting stuff up about yourself, there is not much of a privacy risk, and spam is really advertising, and you probably get more on your TV. We also have Instagram Accounts, that connect to facebook and that we use more for photos than “news”. If you want to know more, ask Ross. Electric Bike for Sale - $950. A generous local resident, Bob Lawes, has donated the club his electric bike, because of the good work he saw us doing towards the Peninsula Trail. Ross has listed it for sale on facebook marketplace and we will donate all the proceeds to MCSC. Time for some fun at Volpino in Mt Martha - a report from Eileen Volpino's was one of the happiest and friendliest social functions I have attended. Food was excellent, staff were efficient and catered well to all our needs. It was great to meet in a different environment and to easily change tables and mingle with different people throughout the evening. 32 attended and hopefully all enjoyed the evening. Suggestions for social events gratefully received. Mornington Secondary College At the Valedictory dinner, the Mornington Rotary Club Music Excellence Award was presented to the very talented Daniel Anderson. As the end of the school year is fast approaching, there will be many presentations of MRC scholarships at schools’ graduation and awards evenings, as we provide 15 student scholarships to primary and secondary schools in our area. MSC Art Show Please note that the dates for 2023 have changed: set up will be from 10am on December 4th and 5th and the official opening will be on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 6th. Please consider helping with the set up if possible. Bunnings BBQ, Nov 19th David is signing up volunteers to fill the duty roster. A volunteer 'thank you' was held at the Mornington Community Support Centre on Thursday, Oct 19 and a number of Rotarians who worked at the Moondah auction attended. President's Report "Repairing Bodies and Rebuilding Lives" Interplast Last week at our meeting we were finally able to watch the Interplast video. This highlighted the work of the Interplast team, which the eight clubs in the Peninsula Cluster helped send to Tonga earlier in the year. The team of surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses undertake reconstructive surgery, principally on the face. It was an inspirational video about how lives can be changed and it’s made possible through the support of Rotary. Our club members agreed to help fund Interplast's 2024 Marshall International Scholarship for a Tongan medical practitioner. Sponsoring a surgeon to develop their surgical skills to be able to perform plastic and reconstructive surgeries is a perfect match for two of Rotary's Avenues of Service - International and Vocational. Building a surgeon's skills through a Marshall Scholarship means that fewer people in the Asia-Pacific will be forced to live with disability and stigma. There is no club meeting this week as there will be a Board meeting. I’m looking forward to seeing the MUNA students from Padua on 1 November, as well as our candidate for the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra. It promises to be another excellent Youth evening. Pam Hall Youth Programs, District 9820 Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2024. This 6-day residential camp, to be held in the second week in July on Phillip Island, focuses on personal development, leadership, and teamwork with both in-classroom theory activities and outdoor practical activities. Please mention this to any 18-30 year old young adults you meet. It is a wonderful opportunity to develop leadership skills and is fully-funded by our club. |
