Jackie Bruce of the Denton Animal Shelter Foundation, Inc. spoke today about the animal shelter and the need that resulted in a new shelter being built.

In 2007 local citizens saw the need to upgrade and update the city animal shelter. DASF was formed as a 501(c)3 organization to join with the city to replace the 30+ year old shelter.
The current shelter has poor ventilation, is in a flood zone which has flooded and is too small for the number of animals that enter the facility.
In 2008 an agreement was made between DASF and the city for a $5 million shelter to be built. DASF committed to raise $2 million of the total. In June 2011 the $2 million goal was reached. The following month the city council unanimously agreed to provide the remaining $3 million to build the new shelter.

The shelter hopes to open this summer at its new location at 3717 N. Elm adjacent to North Lakes Park.
