Karen attended the PETS, President Elect Training for District 5790, this past weekend and shared this international grant with the group. We are excited to announce that the following Rotary clubs will be joining in to contribute to this grant with either DDF or a direct club donation.

Here is a bit of verification of how powerful this math project is:

My club’s project  is sending poor kids to middle school. Only 9% of poor Mexican kids go the middle school because the costs of uniforms is beyond their parents reach. I have gotten involved with about 11 schools over the last few years.

 

One of the poorest neighborhoods has a primary school, General Olechea. It is across the street from an 11 block long 8 block wide graveyard. And the hills around it are full of shacks and tar paper additions to one room concrete houses.

When DG Victor showed me the math game I was stunned. I actually liked it! Me, like math?

 

So, I bought three Magic Circle Math games and gave them to the directora of General Olechea Primary School to give to her teachers to use just as the originators in the State of Sonora did.

 

The 5th and 6th graders played the game 3 times a week for five weeks. Then, about 6 weeks later the national Mexican educational system (SEP/ Secretary de Education Publico) did their normal annual testing of all students in Mexico. 

General Olechea came out having the best math scores on that national test of any primary school in all of the State of Baja California Sur.

This game will change the kind of jobs all kids can get in Mexico having better math capabilities. Again, thank you for your help.

International Project Update: International Service - Basic Education and Literacy Global Grant in Dist 4100, Mexico

The RC of Denton Board approved our club's participation in a Rotary Foundation Global Grant in Mexico. It was approved by our Dist 5790 Grants Committee on February 9. More than 75 Rotary clubs in District 4100 (La Paz, BCS) Mexico, Mexico's Ministry of Education and 2 US clubs are participating in this $99,000 global grant. The grant will support 160,000, 4th and 5th grade students in 4 states in Mexico preparing them to be tomorrow's leaders. The program, called "Magic Circles Math" teaches mathematics, memory and cognitive skills to develop self confidence and self esteem. Some international service committee members from our club will be participating in the training of school faculty and school support staff this summer and fall.
