Global Grant Update: Costa Rica

On September 21, our Global Grant team completed Phase 1 of the Community Assessment for our global grant, A Center for Kids with Autism in Costa Rica. Community Assessments are required by The Rotary Foundation to receive approval of and funding for a global grant.
Last week’s Community Assessment was with the management and some of the (17) therapists at Camino a la Inclusion. Karen and the Costa Rica team, lead by Alberto Ayon, prepared about 30 questions that led to some amazing discussions about Autism training in public schools, the need for more Centers in Costa Rica and even how they treat children who perform self harm simply to feel emotions.
Phase 2 of the Community Assessment will be October 21 with families and some children as well as community members, school faculty and municipal officials.
We have also added a new partner, the ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) program at the University of California, Davis. ECHO will be convening a Central American Autism Conference in Costa Rica in July 2024. Rotarians and the entire staff of Camino a la Inclusion will be attending and participating in workshops. We look forward to welcoming the professionals from US Davis and learning about their extensive research on Autism.
