Brock Community Service Award 2015

The Brock Community Service Award is presented to a non-Rotarian for exemplary community service.  This year's award goes to Bob and Bette Sherman. This award was initiated 2010 by Mark Burroughs and the Denton Rotary Community Service Committee. The award was named for Horace and Euline Brock, the first recipients.  Past honorees have been Martha Len Nelson, Joe and Betty Roy, Virgil Strange, and Dr. Derrell Bulls. 

Bob and Bette Sherman retired to Denton in July, 1995.  They each had successful banking careers in Chicago where they met.  Bob was President/COO of First Colonial Bankshares Corp, a 17 bank holding company.  Bette was Chairman/CEO of First Colonial Investment Services. Inc. and Senior Vice President of First Colonial Bankshares Corp.  Bob grew up in Denton and graduated from Denton High School.  Bette is an army brat and graduated from Heidelberg American High School in Germany.

Upon arriving in Denton, the couple built the Sherman building on Denton’s square and opened the Longhorn Gallery LLC, a business that they sold in 2000. They became community volunteers in 1996.
 
Currently Bob is on the University of North Texas Foundation Board and is Chairman of the Audit Committee.  He is also on the Northstar Bank of Texas Board and a member of the board’s Audit Committee.  He is an Elder of St. Andrew Church. Bette is currently Chairman and Co-Founder, Denton Animal Support Foundation, Inc.  She is also a member of Denton Benefit League, Ariel Club, and Emeritus Member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. 
 
Bob served as Chairman, Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home Board of Trustees; Chairman, Denton Regional Medical Center Board; President, Denton Community Theatre; Treasurer, Denton Country Club Board; Member, Denton Chamber of Commerce Board; Team Chairman, UNT College of Arts & Sciences Capital Campaign Committee; Co-Chairman, UNT 2009 Emerald Ball; Member, UNT Arts and Sciences Development Advisory Board; Board Member, KERA; and Board Member, Denton Housing Authority.  He is also past Program Chairman of the Denton Rotary Club.  Both Bob and Bette served as Co-Chairmen of the Denton Convention and Visitor’s Bureau as well as Co-Chairmen of the CPCH $6.0 million Capital Campaign.
 
Bette’s volunteer activities include:  Chairman of DASF’s $2.0 million Capital Campaign; President, Denton Benefit League; Chairman, United Way of Denton County; Chairman, Salvation Army Denton Advisory Board; Co-Founder and Event Chairman, American Cancer Society You’re Beautiful Fundraiser; Vice-President, Greater Denton Arts Council; Member, UNT Emerald Ball Committee; Member, UNT Arts and Sciences Development Advisory Board; Treasurer, Historical Park Foundation of Denton County; Member, The Arts Guild;  and Vice President, Denton Main Street Association.
 
Bob has a BA from Washington University, St. Louis; and Post Graduate Studies, Washington University School of Law.  Bette has a BA from Northwestern University, Chicago; and an MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
