Water Project in Kenya village
Nov. 28, 2023
There is a very small, very rural, village called Kithaga, just south of Meru/Nkubu, with less than 50 homes all together, that has to walk an excessive way to the nearest river for water, as there are no nearby wells. There is a group of Rotarians that are working with the local leaders to address the water shortage there. The proposal is to just go house-by-house and install systems as we are able to raise the money. We have already raised enough for about 8 homes, and are just getting started! Because individual citizens, and not a public facility, will be the beneficiary, we really can't write a Rotary grant for this project (plus it is too small), so we are just raising money on our own, and the contractor is working in batches of 3-5 homes at a time as we raise funds. Those who have already benefited have committed to sharing with their neighbors until we can get them their own rainwater harvesting system (water tank, gutters, hand wash station, drinking water storage bin, etc.) Each home costs about $840 USD to install, which is very inexpensive when you consider how long the system will last them! It is similar to the Dig Deep project we did as a district for the Navajo nation, just on a smaller scale. |
